Mina and I had planned to visit this exhibit particularly for Suki Kang's works ages ago, waiting for the days I would be in Korea that overlap with the running. Little did we know, Namjoon ended up visiting this exhibit on his 100-day vacation recently, and he took a photo with the works of Kim Yun Shin, also exhibited at the same time! This whole exhibit was really impressive, especially considering that both displayed artists are women! ✨Exhibition Review 강서경 전, 리움, (~ 2023.12.31) Suki Seokyeong Kang, Leeum 마지막 날 보았던 전시가 아직도 눈에 아른거린다. 전시장의 풍경과 각 작업들은, 러프하면서도 섬세하다. 몇백 년 전의 전통을 이야기하면서 지금을 이야기한다. 규칙적이면서 제멋대로인 느낌이다. 그러면서 그 옆에 서거나 걸어가며 보기가 퍽 만만하고 편안하다. 그리고, 작업들은 각자의 아름다움을 품는다. 그 지점이 참 좋았다. 나는 고도로 정제된 작업을 좋아한다. 특히, 작가 각자의 기준대로 정제된 작업들을. 그런데 작가가 한껏 정제된 작업의 나사를 조금씩 풀기 시작할 때가 있다. 그때는 다소 야단법석의 느낌이 드는데, 그것 또한 무척 아름답다. 이번 전시를 보고는 그런 생각이 들었다. 사실, 작업을 보면서 나 스스로 모더니즘과 미니멀리즘을 강서경 작업과 자꾸 연결하려 들어서 그걸 조심하려고 애를 썼는데, 종국에는 그냥 그마저도 재미있었다. #그림이있는서재에서 #the_artful_study #theartfulstudy #exhibition #review #강서경 #sukikang #sukiseokeongkang #버들북꾀꼬리 #willowdrumoriole #leeum #전시리뷰

I heard the third day after flying is the toughest when it comes to jet lag, so opening up with this sleepy artwork followed by other highlights from Frieze LA, a quick hello at Lari Pittman's studio, and a replenishing bite at Judi's Deli in Beverly Hills. 1. @taylorzakarin looking at a work by @mariaberriostudio at @victoriamiro at @friezeofficial where we caught up with @matt_careywilliams 2. Said hi to @sjlev in front of a rib-like (Taylor's words) @liza_lou_studio work at @lehmannmaupin 3. Taylor leaning into @isywod's painting at @carlos_ishikawa 4. For the sneakerheads, the always amazing craftsmanship in @huthhayden at @lisson_gallery made out of cherry bark and Air Jordans 5. How I really felt after minimal sleep, reflected in the boxed up works by @ozgur4ever at @emalinofficial 6. @igshaan.adams beaded and woven work at @caseykaplangallery 7. Art has different roles in my life. Besides blogging about exhibitions, I also collect. The term collection feels a bit too heavy for me because I simply want to buy what I like and can afford at that moment, without planning a route, theme, time frame etc. My friends who are serious collectors say it’s important to keep our choices within fewer categories. Ok, so is it OP art? Kinetic? I love how they investigate color, shape and how they are able to trick our eyes and minds... But wait ✋ I also like non geometric abstraction! And what about the figurative works that attract me?!! 😳🤯 Not easy to keep the focus! . Dilemmas apart, here I am with my latest acquisition: a work by South Korean artist Suki Kang. Born in 1977, she originally trained as a painter, but her practice shifted towards sculpture and she also works with instalation, video and choreography. Congratulations to Suki Seokyeong Kang presented by One and J Gallery for being awarded the Baloise Art Prize. The Baloise Art Prize is awarded annually to two young artists presented in the Art Statements sector of Art Basel. Kang is the second Korean artist following Haegue Yang in 2007 to receive this award, and first for a Korean gallery. SUKI SEOKYEONG KANG @sukiskang Black Mat Oriole (2016) mixed media dimensions variable Gwangju Biennial Installation view, 2016 / Courtesy of the artist and the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania. . Suki Seokyeong Kang’s ‘Black Mat Oriole’ (2018) is an expanded approach to painting and an activation of space through a choreographed installation and video triptych. In the video, Kang creates a narrative influenced by the flow and movement found within classical Korean poetry, calligraphy, and dance but is firmly rooted in the contemporary landscape. Specifically inspired by the choreography found in the historical Korean dance “Chunaengmu,” which was performed for royalty and adhered to strict codes of court etiquette, Kang explores how a space can be divided into grids whether with regard to systems of power, cultural customs, or artistic lineage. In the installation, the exchange of movement and interplay can be navigated through freestanding frame-like structures fashioned into geometric patterns and abstract paintings. Both immersive and interactive, audiences are urged to step into and activate a fluid environment, navigating the shifting relationship between their own bodies and the objects.
