Included in WHAT ARE WORDS WORTH? is a new essay film, Just produced by Richard Denny @richarddennyprojects The film explores the renowned ‘Just Do It’ tagline. These words were inspired by the final words of Gary Gilmore, a convicted murderer executed in Utah in 1977, whose parting phrase was, ‘Let's do it’. In 1987 the advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy rephrased rebranded and trademark-registered these three words as ‘Just do it.’ to sell shoes. The JUST project is attributed to the anonymous and speculative fictional Kotzebue Kollective and Katka Films. It serves as a nod to collective approaches to authorship, labour, and ownership inherent in all creative endeavours. SUNNYSIDE UP, 2023 48x60" Oil & Wax Impasto over Acrylics on Canvas. This has been untitled forever. Not sure quite why. A while back, I had a studio zoom visit with @booksiiii from Primary in Miami, where I was asked what my intention was in the work. My reply was that I wanted the work to be sufficiently opaque in its meaning to allow the viewer (reader) to fill in the blanks based on their own context, history and experience. We dug in on the titling of pieces and how a title can in itself imply my own bias in creating a piece of work, that in turn can/will influence a viewers immediate perception to the work. It really made me think about exactly what I was trying to communicate, why I was communicating and if I was dictating my own personal bias through simple titles. So this remained untitled and 1 in particular got renamed. More on that later. This is the first time I have named a piece based on what it looks like. I will likely rename it. Hope you like. The final day of 30works30days. Today’s prompt is ‘today’s work should vanish by the end of the day’. We all know it will! Every moment from now will soon be over. I’ve spent the last 16 months of making this artwork ‘life is a four-letter word’ as a way of trying hard to hold onto this moment until it’s become the next and the next and the next… with as much intensity as I can possibly muster. It’s exhausting but very satisfying. These days, thinking about the future, let alone planning for it, is a massive distraction from the now. Possibly the crappiest thing about coming out of high demand religion isn't coping with how I was treated, but remembering how I treated other people. All the judgemental comments and proselytizing and support for problematic political agendas. And yes, I know I was indoctrinated into a harmful system without my consent. And yes, much of the harm I did came from a desire to save people from hell. But the more I've come to realize how harmful these things were when done to me, I also have to recognize the harm I inflicted upon others the same way. Some people I've been able to apologize to personally, while some are no longer accessible, or I never knew their names in the first place. To those people, and everyone else I may have hurt during my time “on fire for God,” I am truly, deeply sorry. (1971) 12 x 8cm, c. 40 loose leaves taken from a filofax (including the pages A – L) to which Andersen has added a typed card (using a blank card from the filofax) where he has typed using carbon the text “I AGREE WITH YOU THAT YOU DIDN’T PUBLISH THIS AS A SOMETHING ELSE PRESS BOOK:” and “I DO NOT AGREE:” with room for the owner to sign. On the other side is hand typed the address of the Something Else Press such that the book might be sent to them. A mail art work (and possible artist’s book depending on definition) by the artist which due to being hand made is probably unique. VG+. It appears that some of the other parts of this diary were used to make other mail art items eg… OPUS QUOTATION. 1971. 8 x 12.5cm, 4pp plastic wallet from a filofax which has four typed texts on adhesive tape applied to each surface – two say “MATERIAL NECESSARY FOR OPUS SHOULD BE USED” and the other two “OPUS QUOTATION”. ARTIST of the DAY! —- AZRAEL (519) —- released in: fear, the happyface cult (thc), euphoria, insain first/last release: 1994/11 - 1995/07 lifetime artworks: 19 —- So the Batman “Knightfall” storyline was a big deal to comic book fans in the early 90’s, and the character of Azrael figured heavily in it. As a result, there are 5 or 6 different artists and demoscene folk who’ve used the name. The most prominent in ANSI circles was in ACiD and he’ll be featured tomorrow. Today we have Azrael from the 519 (Kitchener, ON) area. He was in a series of groups that all had the noble goal of putting the 519 region on the artscene map. I’m not sure how he was unaware of the other Azrael (who had been in ACiD for months at the time), but I guess he decided to run with it and released art under the same name, at the same time, for almost a year. I never thought I’d ever ever say I understand how Donald Trump must feel having to sit in a NY courtroom day after day… but I fear I do. My brow is as furrowed as the pictures we see of him – not that I’m sitting in a courtroom, but I have been forced to spend the entire morning on the phone, keeping my cool, trying to sort out my water bills… I am not saying anymore about it except that it all kicked off in October last year and it’s still ongoing. Her whole life was turned upside down with all that heartache and pain. It didn’t seem as though God had good plans for her. But being a believer doesn’t exempt us from great disappointments and hardships. There will be unfair things that we don’t understand, but this is where you have to trust that God is still in control. If you’re patient and don’t get bitter, God will give you beauty for the ashes. Ruth went out in the fields each morning to pick up leftover wheat just to survive. One day the landowner, a man named Boaz, noticed Ruth. Long story short, they ended up falling in love, getting married, and having a little baby boy named Obed. Holding her baby, Ruth never imagined she would be that happy, that fulfilled.
