1957 Isetta 300 Single Door. The Iso Isetta was originally designed and built in Italy and shown to the world in 1953 at the Turin Auto Show. The German Automobile manufacturer, BMW, was struggling in post WWII Europe and saw this economy car as a chance to save the company. BMW purchased the manufacturing license and redesigned it to the point that virtually none of the BMW parts interchange with the Italian version. From 1955 through 1964, 160,000 of these cars were sold. Among the more famous owners of the BMW Isetta were stars like Elvis Presley and Cary Grant. 1951 Jaguar Mark V. The Jaguar designation, Mark V, is unclear as Jaguar did not offer a Mark I through Mark IV. Jaguar had previously built a "saloon" sedan, which was given Mark IV designation after the Mark V had made its debut. The Mark V was produced from 1949 through 1951. However, it was debuted at the London Motor Show along with the famous Jaguar XK-120 sports car in 1948. This was among the first Post WWII design cars to be produced in Europe although it carried over many of the pre war design features. The Mark V could be purchased as either a 4 door hard top "Saloon", Sedan or a 2 door "Drop Head" Coupe version. Both were designed as 4 passenger vehicles. A total of only 1675 of these cars were produced over the course of the three years. Many of the features incorporated into the Jaguar Mark V are considered "classic" by today's standards. The large chrome vertical grill and large headlights resemble those of the Rolls Royce and Bentley cars of the period. The use of "fender skirts" to streamline the look of the body was unusual at the time. Also, a bit unusual were the "Suicide Doors" which were used on the Mark V's. 1970's Era Speedway Motorcycle. Motorcycles used for Speedway Motorcycle Racing are unlike anything you will ever see on the streets. These motorcycles weigh a minimum of 170 lbs, have no transmission or shifting mechanism, no starter, and, most importantly, NO BRAKES. They do have a clutch which is used as a release mechanism at the start of the races. Also, to save weight, this particular motorcycle incorporates the frame as the oil tank. (Notice the filler cap on the frame next to the fuel tank filler.) Racing on short oval dirt tracks, usually 1/10th to 1/th mile, in a series of 6 and 8 lap races, they accelerate like a Formula 1 car and for a split second they can hit speeds well in excess of 80 mph on these tiny tracks. They are extremely popular in Australia, New Zealand, most of Europe as well as here in the US. However, their "heyday" in the US was probably the 1970's through the mid 1980's. Whizzer Motor Bike. The Whizzer Motorbike was truly the forerunner of the Mo-Ped, which was so popular during the late 1970's and throughout the 1980's. It originated in 1939 as a kit form 4 cycle engine that cou;d be adapted to most bicycles of the day. There were numerous engine improvements and in June, 1948, Whizzer introduced the "Pacemaker" which was advertized as the "only complete motorbike." Early Whizzer advertisements claimed up to 100 miles on a gallon of gas and speeds up to 35 mpg Various versions of the Whizzer were sold through 1955 when manufacture of the motorbikes was discontinued. Parts were made availabnle and sold through 1965. In 1998, the Whizzer made a comeback and they were manufactured through March 2009, at which time the company said it was on a hiatus although they continue to manufacture and sell replacement parts. 1956 Cushman 60 Scooter. Scooters, by definition, are motorized vehicles, usually 2 wheel although sometimes 3, with a step through platform. The Cushman Motor Scooters were produced from 1936 through 1965. The Model 53 was built for the military during WWII and was often dropped by parachute, thus it became known as the Cushman Airborne. With ease of operation, centrifugal clutches, step through frames, etc., the Cushman scooters quickly became a desirable mode of transportation for grownup and baby boomers alike, both male and female. 1947 Servi-Cycle Motorcycle. The Servi-Cycle was the dream of a very successful Harley Davidson motorcycle dealer in Baton Rouge, La., Paul Treen. He approached Harley Davidson with the concept of a very inexpensive cross over motorized bicycle. Harley Davidson brass passed on the concept. Mr Treen, always and inventor, motorcycle racer and HD dealer, decided to manufacture and sell his dream with the help of some investors. 1930 Indian Chief Motorcycle with Side Car. The late actor, Steve McQueen, had a passion for fast cars and motorcycles. When it came to motorcycles, he loved vintage bikes and especially Indian motorcycles. This motorcycle with sidecar is an extremely well preserved version of an early Indian motorcycle, and with this particular type of sidecar, making it relatively rare. Another rare item is that it was the only year that the gas and oil tanks were made in two pieces using cast aluminum. 1915 Henderson Motorcycle. The American Henderson Motorcycle Company was formed in 1911 by William G. Henderson in partnership with his brother, Tom W. Henderson. Henderson produced 4-cylinder motorcycles from 1912 until 1931. In 1917, the company was bought by Schwinn Manufacturing Company which built the Excelsior range of motorcycles. The 1915 Henderson Model D has a 65 cubic inch, 7 horsepower, four cylinder engine. It has a 2 speed gearbox incorporated in the rear hub. Henderson motorcycles were the largest and fastest motorcycles of their time, and they appealed to both sport riders and police departments. 1913 Flyting Merkel. 'The Merkel' brand first appeared in Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1902 when Joseph Merkel set-up shop producing single cylinder motorcycles. Merkel was among the most innovative of the pioneer motorcycle companies. By 1905 Merkel had decided to engage in competition, and produced several racing machines. Merkel’s motorcycles were to set many performance standards during the emerging American racing scene. These machines and their riders enabled Merkel to develop a patented spring front fork that was to become the forerunner of the modern telescopic front fork. This fork became the instrument of choice on racing machines of other builders. Also developed was the monoshock rear suspension, a system used today on modern motorcycles. Merkel’s slogan became: “All roads are smooth to The Flying Merkel”. Merkel also used ball bearings as opposed to bronze bushings in the engine. In contrast to primitive atmospheric pressure intake valves, Merkel designed a cam-actuated mechanism. 1932 Ford Victoria. The Victoria model is possibly the most recognizable of all the 1932 line of Ford automobiles designed by Edsel Ford. The Victoria was not really a coupe and not really a sedan but somewhere in between. The Victoria became one of the prized 1932 Fords in years to come as it was, and is, extremely popular with "hot rodders" and "street rodders". Unfortunately, they were also extremely popular when converted to oval track race cars, jalopys and modifieds, throughout the 1950s and 1960s and many of these cars were destroyed in competition. 1969 Dodge Daytona. The 500 plus Dodge Daytona's were designed and built strictly to pass the NASCAR rule of a minimum 500 production cars built and sold in order to race it. At the time, Fords were dominating because of their better aerodynamics. The Dodge Chargers weren't competitive at the high speed tracks and Chrysler needed to turn that around. With winning in mind, Chrysler set up a rush program to produce enough of these aerodynamic racers to pass the rule and to get them on the tracks as soon as possible. Only 75 were built with the Hemi engine and the majority of those were headed to the race tracks such as Daytona Beach, Florida and Talladega, Alabama. For the 1970 racing season, Chrysler designed a purpose built Plymouth that appeared to be the same as the 69 Dodges but was a completely different car. Also, NASCAR changed the rules to require a minimum 2 per dealer which meant over 3,000 had to be built. This explains why there are significantly more Plymouth Superbirds than Dodge Daytona's today. 1964 Ford Mustang. The Mustang was the brainchild of Lee Iococca. While intended as a 1965 automobile, it was debuted on April 17th at the World's Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York. It was announced that it was to be the pacecar for the 1964 Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 1965. All Mustangs built between March, 1964 and August 17th, 1964 were considered "early 1965 models and became known as "1964 1/2 models." Initially, only the Coupe and Convertible versions were built and later the Fastback was added. The coupes outsold the convertible and fastback models by a ratio of 5:1 which makes the latter two models rarer. After over 1/2 century, these early Mustangs are still considered a game changer as it was a beautifully designed and affordable combinaation sports, touring, performance and family car all rolled into one. 1963 Studebaker Lark R-2 Daytona. The Lark was Studebaker's answer to affordable, roomy and reliable family transportation beginning with the 1959 model and running through 1966. It came in numerous configurations, 2 door sedan, 2 door hardtop, 4 door sedan, station wagon and pickup. The 1959 Lark came with either a 170 cu in 6 cylinder flathead or a 259 cu in V-8. By 1963, the R-2 had converted the 6 cylinder engine to overhead valve while remaining 170 cu in and the V-8 was increased to 289 cu in. The boxy look, similar to 1950's and 60's Mercedes Benz sedans, looked like something your grandmother might be driving, just a simple but roomy transportation automobile. However, in 1963, 186 of the R-2 models were built with "Daytona Kits" which included supercharged engines, disc brakes, stiffer suspension, etcetera. Of the 186 Daytona models, this is one of only 90 that came with the factory "4 on the floor". In terms of that era, this was a true "Sleeper". 1963 Studebaker Avanti R2. The Avanti, which means "Forward" in Italian, was definitely ahead of its' time. It is the first mass produced American touring car, 4-5 passengers, with a fiberglass body as well as the first mass produced American automobile with disc brakes. The Avanti, in addition to being the first American mass produced 4-5 passenger touring car, also had numerous safety features such as a padded dash, seat belts front and rear plus a built-in roll bar. The body was provided by Molded Fiber Glass Body Company, which also produced the Corvette bodies for General Motors. 1957 Buick Century Convertible. The 1954 thru 1957 Buick Century convertibles and hardtop models marked Buick's return to its' pre-war "factory hot rod" status. With 300 hp under the hood, these were truly 100 mph cruisers in spite of their 4,000+ lbs. These Buicks had truly classic lines of the era although they came with a price tag of $3,600.00 which was substantially higher than most other convertibles at that time. 1956 Lincoln ContinentaL MK II. In 1956 and 1957, the Continental Company was a stand-alone brand and not part of Lincoln although both were under the Ford ownership banner. A blue-printed Lincoln engine and suspension parts were used on the unique Continental chassis. Continental was then absorbed into Lincoln after 1957. The design was clean and beautiful with most options of the day as standard equipment. This 5,000 lb luxury car was intended to be the height of American automotive elegance. While it was arguably the best American produced vehicle of the time, due to it being hand built and having to go through countless inspections, it was also the most expensive American built car as it sold in the range of $9,500.00 to $10,000. Among the proud owners was Elvis Presley who's white Continental is proudly displayed at the Elvis Presley Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. 1954 Chevrolet Corvette. In 1953, three hundred of the "radical" new Corvettes were somewhat hand built while a factory was being readied for the first mass produced fiber-glass sports car. All of these early cars were white with red upholstery. In 1954, 3,640 of these cars were built. Of these, the majority was again white with red interiors, but approximately 500 came in blue with tan interior and a handful in black with red. The very rare example, on display here, is one of only 100 all red on red versions which were produced in 1954. These original Corvettes lacked performance and they did not display good body fit/quality. By late 1955, Dr. Zora Arkus Duntov, persuaded GM to install the same basic car, the new 265 cubic inch V-8, 195 horsepower, and 3 speed transmission. This created a very formidable sports car. 19412 Ford Super Deluxe Convertible. The Ford automobile was thoroughly updated in 1941. This design was carried forward to the 1942 year model which was aborted due to WWII and restarted in 1946. This was a different design with a wider body which nearly covered the running boards and a wheelbase of 114 inches. The braking system was exceptionally good for the day and the handling was considered the best of an ordinary car at the time. As this was a new design, it was very transitional with numerous changes made during the first year. As an example, the convertible top had no rear quarter window which was added to the 1942 model. 1940 LaSalle Series 50. The LaSalle automobile was bult by Cadillac to fill the wide price gap between General Motors top of the line Cadillac and the next in line Buick. They were manufactured from 1927 through 1940 and consistently outsold the "big brother" Cadillac with sales in 1940 of over 24,000 cars. This was up from just over 7,000 units in 1931. The LaSalle Company operated from 1927 through 1940 and was a companion marque to Cadillac. 1931 Ford Model A Huckster. From 1928 through 1931, nearly 5 million Model A Fords were produced in approximately 15 different body configurations. The 1931 model sold for as low as $435.00 for a Roadster (approximately 22 cents a pound) to $625.00 for the Deluxe Phaeton. What is a Ford Huckster? The "Huckster" was not a Ford model, but rather a style of converted vehicle used in the early part of the 20th century. Normally built by converting a pick-up body, although most models could be used, the rear of this type of vehicle was often fitted with a wood enclosure which had plenty of space for wares. Normally, they had cloth or leather panels to allow easy access to the rear portion of the vehicle which was filled with goods for sale. In other words, this was a conversion built expressly for peddlers, or hucksters, and used for delivering small goods such as fruits, vegetable or what have you. This type of Huckster conversion was prevalent on numerous vehicles during the 1920s through the early 1940s. 1931 Packard Super 8 Model 840. This particular Packard is extremely rare as the "All Weather Sport Sedan" body was built by Dietrich which was one of the finest coach builders of the era. There were only 6 of these cars built of which it is believed that only 3 have survived. This example is the only version that was built with "artillery wheels." It was displayed by Packard at the 1931 Chicago Auto Show. Considered the "golden-era" for Packard, the 840 and 845 Series Packards were big, long wheelbase, roomy and at almost 5,000 pounds, very comfortable trouble free touring cars. They are considered on par with the finest European cars of the day. At a price of just over $5,000.00, approximately the price of a nice house, they were relatively expensive but considered by those who could afford them as being well worth it. Prior to World War II, Packard was considered one of the top luxury cars in the U.S. The 1930 - 1932 Packard Eights were called the quintessential classic. 1929 Marmon Model 68 Coupe. Marmon began experimenting with a limited number of cars as early as 1902 and continued production through 1933 when the Great Depression took its toll on the Indianapolis based company. However, while in business, the Marmon was always in the forefront of automobile engineering advancement. The winner of the first Indianapolis 500, in 1911, Ray Haroun, was driving a Marmon Wasp. (As somewhat of a pilgrimage, this particular Marmon 68 Coupe has been driven around the famous 2 1/2 mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway.) The 1929 Marmon was the first "mass produced" 8 cylinder vehicle. Another innovation of the 1929 models was their anti-lock braking system. It was unique in that it incorporated 3 brake shoes within the brake drum with a series of eccentric linkages. All of the other manufactures of the day used the traditional 2 brake shoe system which tended to lock up under heavy braking while making sharp simultaneous turns. In their day, the Marmons earned the reputation of being reliable, speedy upscale cars. 1929 REO Speedwagon. The name Reo, or REO, comes from the initials of the company founder, Ransom E. Olds. The name, Reo Speed Wagon, came about by his vision that faster delivery trucks were needed and he started building the Speed Wagon Line of light trucks as the forerunner of today's pick-up. This particular Speed Wagon "Camper" was built on a 12 passenger bus chassis and the coach work for the camper/motor home was built in Los Angeles by a company called "Welbilt". Far ahead of its time in many ways, the "Camper" had such amenities as a fold out sofa bed under which an awning and camping equipment were stored. It has a pull out "grooming" sink with a pressurized water system. (This was accomplished by running a air hose between the spare tire and the water holding tank. If the pressure dropped too much, you merely used your tire pump to re-inflate the spare tire to the desired pressure.) There is a separate kitchen sink. The camper came with an "ice box" as well as a four burner stove complete with pot clamps so you could cook while traveling. Notice the side windows can be lowered with tracking screen that drops down as you lower the window. The wood interior of this vehicle is mostly the original African Mahogany, much like the Chris Craft boats of that era. 1961 USAC Championship Indy Car Roadster. This Indy roadster was built in 1961 by famous car builder Floyd Trevis using A. J. Watson's plans. The owner, Pete Salemi, campaigned the car at the Indianapolis 500 in 1962 and 1963 as the Gabriel Absorber Special with driver Allen Crowe. He finished 31st his rookie year and 27th the following year. In 1964, the car was sold and qualified for the Indy 500 as the Clean Wear Special with driver Ronnie Duman. It was caught up and extensively damaged in the horrendous 2nd lap crash that claimed the lives of Eddie Sachs and Dave McDonald. This vehicle is displayed in a replication of an Indianapolis Motor Speedway "Gasoline Alley" Garage. It is an extremely close duplication/replication of what the garage in "Gasoline Alley" looked like from 1915 through 1985. There were some minor modifications during those years but nothing Major. After that the garages were reconstructed out of concrete with modern safety concerns addressed. The doors on our replication are actual doors that were used at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for those 70 years. They are currently on loan to the Woodand Auto Display from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway through the efforts of 3 time Indy winner, Bobby Unser. When we purchased it, we had the body change to conform to Chevy specifications, and had it wrapped as "Smoke's" OFFICE DEPOT race car. All else remains just as it came off the track. Sprint Cup Series cars (often called "Cup cars") adhere to a front engine rear-wheel-drive design. A roll cage serves as a space frame chassis and is covered by a 24-gauge sheet metal body. They have a closed cockpit, fenders, a rear spoiler, and an aerodynamic splitter. Fielding a car for one season usually costs $10–20 million. 1995 NASCAR Winston Cup Stock Car. This car was originally built by Robert Yates Racing for his driver, Dale Jarrett. It was debuted at Taladega, Ala. that year with Dale earning a podium finish. Dale raced this car several times during the course of the year. It is one of several Robert Yates cars he drove that season, earning him the NASCAR Driving Championship. The car was later sold and became part of the Cal Wells, Precision Preparation, Inc., racing team. They raced with little success in 2000 with several drivers but in 2001 they hired Ricky Craven. The Cal Wells team converted the car from a super speedway car to a short track car and Ricky won his first race with this car at Martinsville, Virginia. 1995 NASCAR Winston Cup. This car was originally built as a Chevrolet for the Morgan/McClure NASCAR team and driver Sterling Marlin. This combination won several NASCAR Winston Cup races in the mid to late 1990's. The car was purchased by Richard Woodland's Cold Duck Racing team in 1998 and was driven to victory by Rich Woodland Jr. over Kevin Harvick in the NASCAR Winston West race at Phoenix International Speedway in 1998. This win earned Rich and his team a trip to race in the inaugural race at Motegi, Japan which was also the first race in which both Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. competed together. Drivers other than Sterling Marlin and Rich Woodland Jr., include Chris Bingham and 2 time national United States Auto Club, (USAC), sprint car champion, Brian Tyler. 1995 NASCAR Sprint Cup. In 1995, Tony Stewart became the first driver to win USAC's version of the Triple Crown (this consisted of winning all 3 USAC Championships, the Midget, Sprint Car, and Silver Crown racing championships) and when he was not racing IndyCars, he raced stock cars. Stewart earned the nickname of "Smoke", first for slipping the right rear tire during dirt races and then for blowing his engine often during his '97 championship run. The Tony Stewart car at the Woodland Auto Exhibit is a display car only. It meets all current NASCAR specifications and could be run throughout the end of this year. Even though it is the same as Stewart runs, it did not come from his fleet but rather from the Germain Racing Team. It was purchased in N. Carolina and was wrapped in Stewart's colors and logos using massive computerized decals/wraps no more hours and hours of painting to get that advertising and sponsorship commitment covered. This car conforms to the 2012 Sprint Cup rules. It was actually raced by the Germain Racing Team as a Toyota. When we purchased it, we had the body change to conform to Chevy specifications and had it wrapped as "Smoke´s" OFFICE DEPOT race car. All else remains just as it came off the track. 1992 Chevrolet Lumina. This # 17 chassis/body combination was built specifically for racing on the short tracks, bull-rings, of the NASCAR circuit which includes the 1/2 mile and 1 mile tracks. (Notice the extreme camber in the right rear axle/wheel, the large air duct openings in the front of the car for maximum brake cooling and the large cutouts in the fenders, both front and rear to help prevent fenders being pushed into the tires as short track racing tends to be a bit more physical.) A specific long term history was not available for this particular car/chassis on a per race basis but we do know that the car first raced in Martinsville, Virginia in April 1993 where it finished 4th. 1995 NASCAR Winston Cup. This car was originally built as a Chevrolet for the Morgan/McClure NASCAR team and driver Sterling Marlin. This combination won several NASCAR Winston Cup races in the mid to late 1990's. The car was purchased by Richard Woodland's Cold Duck Racing team in 1998 and was driven to victory by Rich Woodland Jr. over Kevin Harvick in the NASCAR Winston West race at Phoenix International Speedway in 1998. This win earned Rich and his team a trip to race in the inaugural race at Motegi, Japan which was also the first race in which both Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. competed together. Drivers other than Sterling Marlin and Rich Woodland Jr., include Chris Bingham and 2 time national United States Auto Club, (USAC), sprint car champion, Brian Tyler. Anthony Wayne "Tony" Stewart (born May 20, 1971), has won titles in Indy cars and stock cars as well as midget and sprint. Stewart currently owns and drives the No.14 Office Depot/Mobil 1/Burger King, Chevrolet Impala in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for his own team, Stewart-Haas Racing. Stewart is the only driver to win both the Winston Cup under the old points system and the Nextel Cup under the chase playoff format, winning those championships in 2002 and 2005 respectively. 1987 NASCAR Winston Cup, Rich Woodland. This car was driven by Buddy Baker in his last Daytona 500. At that time, it was run as a Buick. (According to NASCAR rules, you had to run the same manufacture engine as body so any GM car could run Chevy engines.) Cold Duck Racing purchased the car from David Ifft in 1993. Rich Woodland qualified for his first career Winston Cup start in this car in Phoenix, Arizona, in late 1993. In 1994, while running 12th overall in qualifying for a Winston Cup race on the course at Sears Point, California, a mechanical failure launched Rich into a vicious series of end over end flips that totally demolished the car. However, the roll cage, safety restraints, etc., did their job and Rich walked away with only minor injuries. As the Oldsmobile line has been discontinued, this #86 is in the record books as the last Oldsmobile to earn NASCAR Winston Cup points.
