Last weekend saw the SUP12 2024 race event, held in Torbay. We received this lovely review from our customer @hollysupadventures who took part using the Gladiator Elite 14' Sport Race board. At 14" x 28" x 5.9" this race SUP is ideal for experienced paddlers looking to up their speed, cadence training and for competing in races. The round tail gives this board great glide, speed and stability, with improved tracking and reducing the number of times you need to switch sides when paddling. Here is what Holly had to say.. "What an event! SUP12 2024 The Sun was shining all day on the English Riveria but this year it was very windy! After the mass start down to the first left hand buoy, the first few laps were spent testing the conditions. It was soon apparent that the cross bay section was very draining with upto 30mph gusts and cross chop to deal with. Most paddlers chose to adapt the lap and paddle up and downwind instead of paddling straight across the bay this then added extra distance to each lap. The wind and gusts didn’t really ease all day, every now and then you could seek shelter by hugging the rocks especially when the tide was high. There were even a few seals that came out to play! The competitors and supporters kept everyone going, Even out on the course encouragement between paddlers was non stop including 2 other gladiator paddlers! The Elite 14x28 was a speed machine and coped with the conditions very well! It had it all, speed, stability, performance, I was very impressed by the Gladiator Elite and it served me very well! Would you believe me if I told you those twelve hours went by quite fast? Well, they sure did! The surroundings, the people, the cheering & the ever changing weather that made every lap different made me feel the time was flying. The first time I actually looked at the clock I’ve paddled for almost five hours! The windstopper tights & long sleve from @casalltraining kept me comfy 🙏🏻. I wasn’t hot or cold once, I wasn’t sweaty & neither did I feel wet - not even when the high tide made me walk up to my hips in the water to get on & off my board. My first ever ultramarathon on SUP is in the books! SUP Twelve down in Torquay - a very interesting set up where you have to padde as many 3,5 km laps as you can in 12 hours. Between the laps you are to get out of the water & up the stairs to walk through the resting area - where you are to decide if you need a little rest (a drink, a cookie, a loo…)or can run/jog straight back out & start another lap. The entry fees go to Charity Above Water (water safety for kids). What crossed my mind paddling for twelve hours? Everything from ”I wanna quit NOW” to ”Can we please do it again tomorrow?” The ”typical English weather” Torquay served us this weekend (with crazy tide & wind gusts strong enough to break umbrellas) kept us occupied! Super happy to have completed 24 laps & not woken up with a feeling of not wanting to paddle ever again 😅. Except for the off shore cross wind from hell the most challenging part for me was walking through the resting area. It was hard not to stop - even when I didn’t need anything. Too many things caught my attention, I lost my focus & almost forgot what I was there to do. (Luckily they did not serve ice cream there 🙏🏻🤣). When the walk through took more then 45 sek it felt harder to get out on the water & start paddling again (the fact I was well aware of before the race, but actually never experienced). To just run through without stopping at the rest area is something I will practice. And… to always remember the sun block. Even if it’s freezing cold in the morning you can end up with an unexpected sun tan after twelve hours on the water ☀️🙈. What a Saturday! My first SUP twelve event, a 12hr Paddleboard endurance event. A massive slump midway but an ice cream put an end to that. I had a target of 15-16laps in mind and completed 17. What an amazing experience @suptwelve 2024 😄 I am so glad I did it, although half way round I wanted to stop because I found the conditions really tough!!
