Part 2 of promotional posters for SAAB Automobile. SAAB Automobile was the car manufacturing division of the Swedish aerospace and defence company SAAB AB. Many of the first SAAB cars were designed by aircraft engineers, and SAAB frequently used its background in aircraft to market its cars. One of its most famous commercials, "Nothing On Earth Comes Close," was directed Tony Scott and was the reason why he was later hired to direct the movie "Top Gun." I go into more detail on SAAB Automobile's history in part 1, but in summary SAAB began producing automobiles in the late 1940s as a response to the shortage of private cars in Postwar Europe. The automobile division grew quickly and earned a reputation for quality, design, safety, and prestige. In 1990, SAAB formed SAAB Automobile as a joint venture with General Motors before GM turned the company into a wholly-owned subsidiary in 2000. Due to the slowing economy in 2007, SAAB began to decline. Although a turnaround plan was announced and SAAB had a strong brand with much goodwill from the public, a poor market position and inefficient operations (among other things such as poor collaboration with GM) led to SAAB's bankruptcy in 2011. Despite the failure of its automobile division, SAAB still continues today as an aerospace and defence company.
