Released 55 years ago today, on 1 April 1969: groundbreaking choreographer Bob Fosse's feature film debut as director, SWEET CHARITY. Adapted from Neil Simon's 1966 Broadway play (with songs by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields), in turn adapted from Federico Fellini's 1957 film NIGHTS OF CABIRIA. You ever wonder where the song "Big Spender" came from? It was from SWEET CHARITY. Fosse's wife, stage legend Gwen Verdon, starred as Charity Hope Valentine (the dancer dreaming of romance and an escape from her sleazy surrounds) when SWEET CHARITY ran on Broadway, but when the film version came about Verdon was replaced by Shirley MacLaine (younger and a more bankable *film* star). Verdon served as SWEET CHARITY's assistant choreographer and helped coach MacLaine for the dancing scenes. The film's critical reception was mixed and its box-office intake was disappointing; Fosse's next film as director (1972's CABARET) was far more successful on both fronts. I find SWEET CHARITY overlong but it's got some good musical numbers and Shirley MacLaine is pretty endearing. It's easily the weakest of Fosse's five films as director but it's by no means worthless and it treats, in a relatively light manner, the dark theme that permeates all of Fosse's films, the disconnect between the glamour and the seamy underbelly of showbiz. [ Sweet Charity | 1969 ] ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀✨ ⠀ and so ‘edits without borders’ continues!! I really have guy berryman to thank for this edit bc if I hadn’t listened to the entirety of the beatles’ ‘abbey road’ this morning I wouldn’t have been instilled with such a great need to indulge in the concept of my gritty 60s mod utopia, watch ‘sweet charity’ as a result AND produce this edit inspired by @vintagely’s leon edit!! ⠀ to me, shirley maclaine will always be charity hope valentine, a clueless yet devoutly hopeful dance hall hostess who believes that without love, life has no purpose. the first time I watched this film I was pretty much crushed by the ending, but since that time I’ve come to love it for exactly what it is : a somewhat drug-fuelled, vibrant and joyful exploration of late 60s culture & the heart’s dogged resilience (also the music is iconic you can’t deny it) 🧡✨✌🏻 ⠀ these stills are from ‘if they could see me now’, arguably my favourite number from the musical and the film alike, mostly because of shirley’s infectious enthusiasm and the giddy honesty of the lyrics!
