Remembering the great British actor and comedian David Tomlinson, born on this day. The first picture is a polaroid taken of David visiting Peter Sellers in hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, in December 1979, after Peter had suffered yet another heart attack. The two actors were on a break from filming "The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu" in Paris, during which time Peter went back to his home in Gstaad, and after being taken ill, was hospitalized in Geneva. Peter and David were close friends, their friendship going back to when they made "Up the Creek" together in 1958. Peter admired David and looked up to him, and the two spent a lot of time together in Paris during the filming of Fu Manchu. In his autobiography "Luckier Than Most", David recalls fond memories of his time with Peter. It is a heartwarming account of a genuine friendship. David flew from Paris to visit Peter in hospital, and Peter showed him "Being There"; just the two of them watching the movie in Peter's hospital room. Peter was very proud of this film. "Let's have a photograph", Peter said to David. David sat next to Peter in his hospital bed, and this touching photo was taken by Peter's personal assistant, Michael Jeffery. Pictures 2 & 3 were taken on the set of Fu Manchu, the third one signed by Peter. "The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu" is both actor's last movie. David retired after completing the film, and Peter passed away a few weeks before the film's theatre release in 1980. The gardening apron Peter wears in the film is up for auction next week, during Prop Store's vast entertainment memorabilia auction in Los Angeles. Peter Sellers in "Being There", 1979. Pictures 3 & 4 are design sketches made for Peter's wardrobe as Chance the gardener by costume designer May Routh (which she said Peter loved!). Sold at auction a few years ago, the costume sketches included fabric samples with each design. May Routh had an impressive career as a costume designer. Some of the many projects she worked on include Richard Attenborough's 1969 film "Oh! What a Lovely War", Richard Lester's "The Three Musketeers" (1973) and of course, Hal Ashby's "Being There". She made David Bowie's costumes for "The Man Who Fell to Earth" (1976), worked with the Bee Gees for the 1978 musical "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", and created the fabulous mermaid costume for Daryl Hannah in "Splash!" (1984). Interviewed in 2019 by The Costume Designers Guild, May Routh shared a few anecdotes about working on "Being There". From what to do (and not to do) around Peter on the set, to the yellow silk pajamas that ended up costing 800$, to working with Peter's personal dresser and assistant Michael Jeffery, and to her beautiful costume choices for the film, the interview is a fascinating insight into the making of the movie, and the day-to-day of a costume designer. Peter Sellers, director Hal Ashby and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel on the set of "Being There", 1979. Filmmaker Mark Romanek was a film student and worked with Hal Ashby on this film. He kept a diary of his experience on the film set (last two slides). He took notes of his daily tasks and his conversations. For the hospital room scene, he wrote how "Sellers came up with 3 changes, all great" and of how Peter broke up laughing during the shooting. Romanek praises Hal Ashby, whom he admired greatly. As Stanley Kubrick was also another of Romanek's idols, he mentions in his diary a conversation he had with Peter, where Peter had spoken to Kubrick, who was making "The Shining" at the time. Brookfield, Elstead 🌼 Peter Sellers and Britt Ekland @brittekland lived in the beautiful 15th century redbrick oak-beamed countryside house in Elstead, Surrey, called Brookfield. It had a lake with ducks, gardens, barns (one of which was turned in part into a movie theater) and paddocks. Previously owned by actor Spencer Tracy, Peter later sold the house to Ringo Starr in 1969, who in turn, sold it to musician and singer-songwriter Stephen Stills. Writing and recording music at the estate, Stephen said: "Brookfield was a magical place. I had wonderful bursts of creativity there." In November 1970, Peter revisited Brookfield house. As told by Stephen Stills in a 'Classic Rock' interview, recalling Peter's visit: "His children really wanted to see his old house, so his office calls up and says 'Mr. Sellers would like to come and visit you', and I said 'Of course'. So he came out and we were rehearsing. They had a little walk around and then the children went off to play and Peter comes in and starts playing drums with his hands. We didn't really say very much. I never really sat down and had a conversation with him." On the first picture, captured by photographer Henry Diltz, Peter and Stephen are seen with John the gardener. Stephen wrote the song "Johnny's Garden" (featured on Stephen's band Manassas 1972 album of the same name) as a tribute to the gentle gardener. Said Stephen: "He had soul. He was a herbalist and used to make incredible herbal teas." Once too Peter's gardener when he lived at the house, he also had a profound impact on Peter. As this year's Cannes Film Festival is coming to a close this weekend, here is Peter Sellers photographed at the 1980 edition of the festival, meeting with the press to discuss and promote the film for which he was nominated for Best Actor, Hal Ashby's masterpiece "Being There". For his role of Chance, Peter was not only nominated at the Cannes Film Festival, but also, among others, at the Oscars, and posthumously at the 1981 BAFTA's. He did however win the award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, at the Golden Globes held on January 26, 1980. Peter did not attend the ceremony but the award's presenter, actress Ellen Burstyn, accepted the award on his behalf and posed with Peter's award for the Hollywood Foreign Press (photo 3). His Golden Globe award was auctioned a few years ago, and actor Sacha Baron Cohen told about how he tried to buy it. A forever fan of Peter and much inspired by his work, he said "He was the hero of mine growing up (...) All of his characters, despite being over the top and not believable in the hands of almost any other performer, are completely authentic and completely three dimensional. Shirley's character Eve comes looking for him, and they have a sweet touching exchange before walking away together. Director Hal Ashby, excited about Peter's performance, reportedly said "The way it's going with these characters and what's happening with them, I could have this guy walking on water at the end of the film. I think I WILL have him walking on water at the end of the film." Remembering the author Jerzy Kosiński, who was born on this day in 1933. Jerzy wrote the novel "Being There", made into the beautiful 1979 masterpiece by Hal Ashby, with Peter Sellers in the role of Chance the gardener. Peter read the book in 1971, and spent the next few years convincing Jerzy he was perfect for the part and trying to have the film made. Peter said "I read the book every six months. I KNEW Chauncey Gardiner". Jerzy said: "Being There is to Sellers what Hamlet is to Olivier. Sellers' Chauncey Gardiner is mystical. I didn't believe it could be done. I remember after years of telling me he could play Chance - writing me letters and signing them Chauncey Gardiner - once in Malibu he proved it. We were walking in a garden at a friend's house and he saw a small tree that was drying out. Dying. He bent, stiffly, picked up the hose and began watering the little tree. Very quietly. Complete contentment on his face. He WAS Chance." Jerzy passed away in 1991.
