A Tale of Two Paddles. The paddle on the right is my “go to” paddle, a “Sliver” style from @badger.paddles. The paddle on the left was handmade & given to me by @trevorc27. On a recent day trip, I had to fight strong head winds while returning to my car. I put my Sliver aside and used the paddle from Trevor with its huge surface area to battle the wind. It gave my shoulder a real workout, but helped me power through the gusts. A good reminder of the value in having more than one paddle with you, and more than one of a particular style, even when you’re just out on day trips. It’s been a minute All though we haven’t had much of a winter to speak of - with spring upon us it’s hard not to start to day dream about paddling trips and making my way back to the Backcountry of Algonquin Park 😍. This month I am picking up my new Cadillac - A Beautiful Swift Keewaydin 17 Carbon Kevlar Tandem ( In two tone Ruby Red and champagne 😍)….I am not excited at all ….🎉😂🥳 This new bad girl will be doing some good treks this year for her official break-In ! I am Still figuring out what to name her ( I am all Ears on suggestions!) . My Little Cadillac coupe will always be my first love (my beautiful Cruiser 14.8) She is small but mighty! Even with my new tandem I know I’ll still be using the cruiser fairly often . The annual tradition of Lake Traverse in Algonquin is officially in the calender! The long annual backcountry trip is still being figured out . After the experience in the north end of Algonquin Park last year, it’s back to entering along Highway 60 as we’ve done previously. I would love to get to Hogan if we can figure out a way to swing it! For me Hogan is one of the most prettiest lakes to stay in ! I also would love to try a weekend in another park ( I know!😱 Blasphemy!) Temagami has peaked my interest - any folks out there that can make recommendations on backcountry routes would be awesome! Last years canoe season started off at Lake Travers for 4 days. Our base camp was spectacular 😍! A beautiful wide flat site allowing for a great camp set up, a large sandy beach with beautiful views of the surrounding lake and a point far enough out into the water to see that night sky in its full glory, . A little history about Lake Travers in Algonquin park. Lake Travers is Located in the North eastern section of Algonquin Park and part of the Petawawa River system . Log drives were once a big part of Algonquin parks history, the last logs were floated down the Petawawa river and throughout other surrounding river systems in 1959. When paddling Travers through to the Petawawa river you can see evidence of this through the amount of dead heads still floating at the surface . If you didn’t know any better at first glance you’d think they were giant tortoise heads peaking out as you paddle by ! Another interesting fact about Travers is that its home to the Algonquin Radio Observatory . In the 1980’s its primary function by the National Research Council was to detect radio signals from space. Today is its a ground station for Northern Light , a Canadian mission to send more landers to the surface of Mars! It is also being used for SSA ( Space Situational Awareness ) along with Earthfence Geo acting as a Deep Space Radar ! Lastly this satellite is fully steerable and is equipped with a 46m antenna making it the largest in Canada and one of the largest in the world. As a result it is also used as an active control point for GPS.📡 I was able to witness some Amazing views of the Milky Way from our beach and enjoyed a relaxing paddle down the Petawawa to Big Thompson rapids . Lots of little critters and birds paid visits to our camp . Stumbled on a Den of Garter snakes on the beach as well as witnessed two Swans swimming by our point . After a good day of paddling in Quetico last September, I was starting to look for a place to camp when a significant storm blew in. What was a warm & sunny day became cool, windy and ominous.
