My gouache experiment is complete. I'm pretty happy with the result, considering I haven't used gouache since college nearly 30 years ago 😆. Moving forward to the canvas stage, there are a few updates I plan on making. 1) I want to stylise the foreground more and use less details on the rock. 2) I want to lighten up the landmass at the top right. This will create more contrast with the trees and help it recede into the background more. I think I was able to capture the vibe of a cool spring day at Rock Lake in Algonquin Park pretty well. I’m heading back to McKaskill Lake, the 117th lake in the Year of Algonquin, in a couple of weeks. Last time I was there was 2017, at the same time of year. We stayed one night on a great little island site, one night in the McKaskill Ranger Cabin and walked out from there along an access road in a snowstorm. Busy Beaver🪵🦫 Beavers are pretty impressive animals. They’re able hold their breath under water for up to 20 minutes. They’re capable of building large dams and lodges to live in. They can also eat underwater without getting water in their lungs. They mainly eat wood as part of their diet and are cool to watch as they turn a large branch into sticks. I didn’t take many pictures of Dove Lake, the #116 lake in the Year of Algonquin. It’s a small lake just before McKaskill that I somehow managed to get lost on despite it being roughly the size of a postage stamp. Can You Find Earthworms in Algonquin Park? — Earthworms are not native to Algonquin Park and in fact there are no native earthworms in Ontario. The good news is if you dig in Algonquin Park’s soil you will have a hard time finding worms, but not everywhere. Worms are becoming increasingly common in Algonquin Park, brought into the Park through their use as bait for fishing and through the transport of soil. Help stop the spread of worms that have been shown to damage native soil communities, hardwood forests, wildflowers, plus increase soil compaction and erosion. "NORTHERN DREAMS... REFLECTIONS IN THE WILD... REDUX... I can't believe that it's been almost a year, since this picture was taken by a good friend of mine... It's rare that the photographer in action, gets photographed by another photographer... The good news, is that I will be seeing her in Algonquin next week... Yahoo!!... It's rare, if I get a picture of myself, in these landscape pictures... Here's an incredible capture, taken by my good friend Ann ( @abrokel )... Don't I look intense?... Great stance!!... Very professional... I's a good thing, that I didn't fall over the edge... Ha! Ha!... By the way, I was standing on the embankment of the lake, which was very dangerous... As you can tell by the straps around my neck, I also had several cameras with me, to document this magnificent beauty... Thankfully, I didn't slip and fall into the lake... It would have been a very expensive mistake... I met up with Ann and her friend Holly, in the park... They are my witnesses, that this phenomenon was real!!... When taking landscape photographs, the conditions are never the same... The cloud formations, the lighting and the weather are never duplicated... You will never get the same shot twice... Algonquin Park Moose Watching — Is this the best time to see Moose in Algonquin Park? Yes, mid-April marks the beginning of Moose watching season along Highway 60 in Algonquin Park. The application of salt to Highway 60 during winter road maintenance operations attracts Moose to roadside ditches. Moose with salt deficient winter diets capitalize upon this unnatural source of salt. From mid-April when roadside ditches thaw, to about mid-May when roadside ditches dry out, chances are good you will observe several of these magnificent animals during a leisurely drive along Highway 60. When driving in Algonquin Park, stay alert as Moose (and other wildlife) can be on the road, standing in roadside ditches, or stepping over the guardrails, and are often surprisingly hard to see, especially after dark! Each year Moose and other wildlife are killed in vehicle collisions. Reduce your speed (especially at night) and help save the lives of Algonquin Park's Moose and possibly even your own. If you see a Moose, pull onto the shoulder and off the traveled portion of the road and turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers. If drivers flash their vehicle headlights at you in Algonquin Park, there's a good chance a Moose is ahead or maybe even a "Moose Jam" (a traffic jam caused by Moose watchers). Staying in your vehicle is less likely to spook roadside Moose. If you choose to exit the vehicle, watch for traffic and ensure you keep a safe distance from all wildlife. If you are watching a Moose and it flattens its ears the length of its body (rather than ears pointing to the sky), you are too close and you should back up. Harming, harassing, or disturbing wildlife is illegal in Algonquin Park and Ontario's other provincial parks. These are Photoshopped images that were pieced together using photos of two of my original full size painted paddles. The fly fishing paddle will use a rainbow trout instead of the original brook trout and the canoe will be painted green. The green canoe paddle has changed as well. It will have the canoe flipped and in red instead, and the background pine and shoreline will be replaced with something different then the original. Did I mention that these will be miniature paddles? Yup, only 18” long… and at a fraction of the cost of the original paddles. My client is supplying them and they are on their way. On this particular day, we paddled along the river and here you can see a black duck on the left side of the canoe, and the arrowhead flowers on the right. Sometimes, I wait all night, just to catch that perfect shot... Friends ask me all the time - "When do you sleep?"... The answer is - "When I am tired."... Ha! Ha!... For me, capturing the perfect landscape shot in Algonquin Park is magical... The conditions are never the same... The cloud formations, the lighting and the weather ( @weathernetwork ) are never duplicated... You will never get the same shot twice... Each unique capture is a special moment... It makes you appreciate the beauty of Mother Nature... The conditions were perfect... Calm waters, incredible cloud formations, perfect light and clear (mirror like) reflections from the lake... All of this was necessary, as the Sun was trying to peak through the clouds... With the rapidly changing conditions, I knew that I only had minutes... Magnificent Lake Of Two Rivers...
