Drawing with tape in 1st grade! I have been doing this project for a few years now and it is super fun and really yields amazing results easily. I have done tape drawing in different ways, but I believe the specifics of this project originated from the creative mind of @wemakemarks , another awesome LA elementary art teacher. In this version, there are a few “rules” like take one piece of tape at a time and try to connect to another piece! This was such a fun project with a barefoot buzz around the room!! When they finished this collaborative drawing they sat down to do drawings inspired by the tape drawing!! Have you made a piece of art off of another piece of your art? This design challenge promotes communication, interconnectedness and fine motor skills through the ripping of masking tape, which I taught them how to do with what I call their “pinchers!” 🦞 . Busting out the jams too like swing music and the classic “lollipop” song… I was singing it at carpool yesterday and this first grade girl was on the bench waiting and I asked her if she knew the song. She said no, so when I put her in the car with her mother, I told her to play it for her daughter! She came in today and told me that she listened to the song and loved it! So I put it on in class. Galerie Paris’s Mitsui Bussan Yokohama Building is actually a historical landmark built in 1911 - it was the first reinforced concrete commercial building in Japan, and one of the few buildings in Yokohama that fully survived the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The interplay between 2D and 3D has been something I’ve been exploring quite a bit in my recent work. The last piece made for this latest show, this piece was by far the most expressive and fluid and may be a glimpse of the type of work that will be coming next. This series began with overall compositions, painted areas, and delineated line work being more planned out in general, but over time the painted areas and compositions became much more fluid and more focused on serendipity. This was the first piece where the tape lines were less focused on defining forms, and more focused on defining movement. Curious to see what else may come from this approach. . A few photos from today's experimental drawing at Ards Arts Centre and a couple from last weeks class. This week we explored the idea of expanded drawing, taking the drawing off the page...I gave the class some tape for their lines and the space (the room) was the page. This is another piece that happened in a reasonably low drama way from start to finish. The paint portion was done in one session while the base background layer was still wet - this allowed the various paints to flow into each other in forms that have a natural weight and movement based on the actually physics of the interaction. The secondary pen layer did take quite some time because of the level of detail and the small scale, but the actual semantic language of the lines flowed out quite naturally. I was happy that the finished piece has a sense of both familiarity and unfamiliarity to it that seem to be in both struggle and balance with one another. . Artist Marietta Hoferer is participating in two group exhibitions in New York over the coming weeks. Opening this evening, 5:30-8pm, at the Atlantic Gallery, ‘This is the Future of Non-Objective Art’ is curated by Suzan Shutan and brings together the work of over 100 contemporary artists working in the “invisible realities” of abstract art. Exhibition continues through March 2. Meanwhile, Marietta is also participating in ‘PLEXUS: Intricacy of Lines’ at the Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn.
