1938 - State Cinema (now apartments), Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - Sir James Miller. Grade B Listed In addition to the cinema, the building originally contained four shops, two billiard halls and a skittle alley. It became a Mecca bingo hall in the 1970s before being converted to the Babylon nightclub ( ‘the worst in Edinburgh’) in the early noughties. And it became the Kingdom Church after that. The last film played in 1972 and starred Richard Burton in “Where Eagles Dare”. The whole building cost £45k to build. A two bed apartment there now costs around £400K. James Miller & Partners was founded by James Miller and his brothers John and Lawrence as James Miller & Partners Limited in 1934. James was Lord Provost of Edinburgh between 1951 and 1954, and in 1964 he became Lord Mayor of London. Before the Second World War, Miller Homes primarily operated in the East of Scotland, capitalising on the housing boom at that time. They expanded into the west of Scotland, then in England post war, rebuilding war-damaged properties. By the 1950s, Miller Homes was actively involved in new build schemes and has built over 60,000 homes throughout the UK. 1975 - Wester Hailes Education Centre, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall & Partners (RMJM). The Wester Hailes area was originally farmland until the 1970’s, when thousands of homes were built. Predominantly flats and tower blocks. As soon as the scheme was built, it was blighted by the lack of shops, social and recreational amenities. The promised promenades, courtyards and lakeside views did not appear. In fact unemployment in 1980s Wester Hailes was around three times higher than Edinburgh, with a third of residents classified as economically inactive by the end of the decade. In tandem with mass unemployment came an influx of cheap heroin, and AIDs soon followed on. Ditto high levels of crime. It was referred to as ‘waster’s hell’. Owing to poor design, poor build quality and poorer building materials, the area has seemingly being fixed up since it was first built. It was extensively redeveloped during the 1990s and 2000s, with a large number of properties being renovated and some others - such as the high rise “slab block” flats at Hailesland Park demolished and replaced with newer “low rise” housing. Three blocks were demolished, largely because they were so badly built that their structural integrity was compromised. The partnership of Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners was founded in 1956 in Edinburgh when Stirrat Andrew William Johnson-Marshall (1912-1981), who was then Chief Architect to the Ministry of Education, joined Robert Hogg Matthew who had been Chief Architect to the London County Council. Robert Matthew was Professor of Architecture at Edinburgh University (1953-1968) at the time the company was founded. 1963 - St Teresa of Liseux Church, Craigmillar, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - Charles W Gray. Gray was successful in his studies and won a travelling bursary in 1925, and spent three months of every year sketching in France, Italy, Spain and England. He spent 1928 to 1930 in Cannes and St Raphael. He was a prolific architect of churches with dozens in Scotland and one in Grenoble. He also built several villas in St Tropez and Cap Ferrat. Octagonal with pebble-dashed walls, green copper roof topped by a cross and a stone statue of St Teresa above the main entrance. James Stewart Johnston was born in 1901, and was educated at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh. He started his training in his father’s architecture firm in 1918 but moved two years later for a five-year apprenticeship with Henry & Maclennan, studying at Edinburgh College of Art under John Begg. He returned to his father’s practice in 1926 as an assistant. He made biennial trips abroad which took him to France, Switzerland, Belgium and Holland. He was taken into partnership by his father in 1930 and was admitted as a student member of the Edinburgh Architectural Association in 1932. He continued to practise alone until 1947 when he took his younger brother Frank W Johnston (born 1906) into partnership, the firm name becoming J & F Johnston. 1977 - Monklands Leisure Centre, Coatbridge, Scotland, UK - Peter Womersley. In 1960, Basil Spence was asked to name the best modern house in Britain, he said, “Anything designed by Peter Womersley”. Womersley was best known for his modernist and brutal buildings. English-born in Nottinghamshire, he lived in the Scottish Borders, where he worked on several buildings - including Bernat Klein’s iconic A listed design studio. He was responsible for other notable buildings including The Nuffield Transplantation Surgery Unit at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital - “the first experimental building specifically designed for the transplantation of human organs”, and the boiler house at the former Melrose District Asylum. 1967 - Pathfoot Building, University of Stirling, Scotland, UK - RMJM (architect - John Richards). Category A listed. Part of a stunning modernist campus. The former country estate was developed in the late 1960s by the architects RMJM, with contributions from Reiach and Hall and Morris and Steedman - three of Scotland’s most significant post-war modernist architecture practices. The modernity is contrasted with the surviving 18th century designed landscape, and the Robert Adam designed Airthrey Castle. Alongside the offices and lecture theatres, Pathfoot is also a public art space, displaying the University’s art collection along with temporary exhibitions, in its corridors and 17 courtyards. The ethos from day one was a belief that artworks should be accessible to all, who work, study or visit. There’s a nod to another RMJM’s building, the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh. This was under construction at the same time as the design and construction of Pathfoot. John Richards was the partner in charge of both projects. Both buildings share similarities with a strong horizontal emphasis with linear white roof line above a recessed dark window line. Pre-fabrication was also used on both projects to allow rapid progress on site. The partnership of Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners was founded in 1956 in Edinburgh when Stirrat Andrew William Johnson-Marshall (1912-1981), who was then Chief Architect to the Ministry of Education, joined Robert Hogg Matthew who had been Chief Architect to the London County Council. Robert Matthew was Professor of Architecture at Edinburgh University (1953-1968) at the time the company was founded. It remains one of the largest architecture and design networks in the world. Notable projects include: New Zealand House, London, Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh, United Kingdom and Capital Gate, Abu Dhabi.
