Meet The University of Hawaii Kulintang Ensemble! This is new local group that celebrates the soothing rhythms kulintang music from the Southern Philippines. Kulintang, a vibrant music form characterized by gongs and vivid hues, offers both an auditory and visual treat with synchronized movements enhanced by handwoven textiles. In addition to the Kulintang ensemble, the group includes other percussion instruments like the Dabakan (goblet drum), Agong (bass gongs), Gandingan (talking gongs), and Babandil (timekeeper gong). The Lake Sebu community is blessed with leaders, artisans and educators who aim to preserve their rich cultural heritage. During our brief visit last February, we had the privilege of meeting some of these remarkable individuals. Bundos Fara (1&2) a brass caster who transforms old bullets into traditional T’boli jewelry and objets d’art. Barbara Ofong (5,6) of the Kesesonom Weaving Center is one of the celebrated Abaca “dreamweavers”. We were so fortunate to be able to watch her demonstrate the painstaking process of preparing the individual pieces of abaca to be loomed into her distinct designs. Rosie Godwino Sula (7) is not only a talented musician and chanter but also a lecturer at the University of the Philippines. She is passing on her wealth of knowledge to a new generation of T’boli musicians, ensuring the continuity of their musical traditions. Last but not least, Maria Todi (3,4) is the founder of the Lake Sebu School of Living Traditions. We enjoyed a hearty T’boli feast for lunch at her longhouse followed by a delightful demonstration of music and dance. Maria and the SLT is a great resource for anyone who would like to visit Lake Sebu and learn about the history of the area. A new road now connects General Santos to Lake Sebu, considerably shortening the road trip. There has never been a better time to visit the lake and the surrounding area such as the stunning Seven Falls (8). The next place on my South Cotabato bucket list is Lake Holon, does anyone want to join me? 🏔️🙏🏽 #philippines #travelphilippines #mindanao #lakesebu #southcotabato #tboli

“The idea of Mindanao as muse began with hearing of a Tboli textile repatriation story from curator Marian Pastor Roces,” editor-in-chief Bea Valdes writes in her editor’s letter for Vogue Philippines’ April 2024 issue. “We asked if we could follow their footsteps towards a plan for a Tboli community center Gónô Tmutul, a House of Stories. We eagerly accepted an invitation to return to a place we had never been to before. The plan for Gónô Tmutul is to house repatriated material, display photographs from the Mapping Philippine Material Culture project and other collections, and serve as a learning space for the children of the community. The center is set to open its doors in July. In “Weaved Lives,” features editor Audrey Carpio traces the objects that provide an integral framework that threads back these ancestral stories into the Tboli people’s lives. Grateful for all the opportunities that bring a closer to the ONE, that remind us of our ONEness and how to flow the way Spirit calls. #Pakikipagkapwa #interconnection To be honest, I was a bit anxious about bringing in the element of a mini sound bath and guided meditation for my first time (I tend to overplan lol and now I'm learning to free-flow 🙌🏽). The thought hadn't even crossed my mind until the day before, when I was walking down the street, with hella gratitude in my heart, then the voice within said, "Bring your hapi drum, your large Djembe and tell Kamani to bring his shaker... and lead a guided journey meditation." 'Hmmmm... okay.' Then, again before even people entered the space, and we finished setting up, the voice within spoke again, "Play." So, i grabbed my hapi drum and closed my eyes and WE flowed like water. We were moved to ritually bless the space with a sound bath, with our drums, shaker and our energy. It was such a 🔥 freestyle jam that set the vibration, along with our intentions, barreling into existence. Sometimes you may not feel ready or even doubt a calling, choose intead to not get in your way or let fear trip you up... ALLOW Self to tap in anyway, just BE, the vessel for the Divine to channel through. What beautiful things will flow... as we flow. Thank you to everyone that came through and joined our first DIVINE SIP & COLOR of 2024 on March 8th. Grateful to those who shared the symbolism of their visions with open hearts. So much we can learn when we can go deep with one another. Maraming salamat to @baranggayoakland for hosting and welcoming us to the space. And thank you to my Beloved @ke_the_spirit for co-guiding this space with me, sharing his lyrical blessings and creating the "I Allow" 12+ herbal tea for all to sip on. Grateful to be on this journey of love with you. It will only expand from here with Spirit at the Center. I'll keep you posted on the next one. *Original artwork Boi Henwu illustration by @deejae408 #boihenwu #thedivinecoloringbook #sipandcolor #coloringbooks #tboli

Happy Women's Month! I wanted to celebrate and share the women from different indigenous groups here in the Philippines. These women not only embody the rich culture and history of the country but as well as the perseverance and strength to continue fighting for their heritage and rights despite the issues of displacement, environmental destruction of their homes and ancestral lands and many more. These tribes and groups are found from the northernmost part of the Philippines to the land near conflicts in the sea. Rooted to the Motherland. Rooted in Kapwa. Rooted to my family + bloodline. Rooted to my ancestors and guides. Rooted to my intuition, my ugat. Rooted to purpose and passion. Rooted to the Source. Rooted in Love. The last 3 weeks in the Philippines has elevated, inspired, healed + evolved me in ways I didn’t expect, but also deeply prayed for. So much to share, but still integrating all that I have experienced, learned, offered + received. So while I’m in the feeling, I wanted to atleast share this photo of the beginning of my soul journey back home to the Motherland with the indigenous people of the Kalinga, Maguindanaon + T’boli tribes 🏝️🇵🇭💖 This experience has changed me to become a better human. Forever grateful to @alleluiasfprojects @kulartspresents for the special opportunity to be a part of such an ✨EPIC✨ Tribu Tour and to be in Kapwa with such a sweet and heARTful crew of Pilipino Americans artists, culture bearers, community organizers and Kapwa. My TIWALA ~ faith and trust ~ in our individual and collective ability as a people to lead with love, to rise above the struggle and to raise the vibrations is affirmed and fortified. I’ve returned to my family and community in the Bay rooted, rested, rejuvenated, elevated, clear, and ready to face all the challenges, and receive all the blessings with grace. To my TribuTour Kaps, I love you all so deeply 🥹 It’s such a blessing to have crossed paths with y’all in such a powerful + intimate way! We are our ancestor’s wildest dreams friends! So grateful to have learned so much about our people + culture, the lupa, the tubig, our non-human relatives, the cycles of life and death + the realms beyond together. Thank you all so much for everything we shared + offered each other on this bangka journey. I miss you all so much + can’t wait til we reunite again 💓 Kapwa for Life ✊🏽 More photos + videos of this humbling and phenomenal experience coming soon! Can’t wait to share! Until then, take care of each other! Life is precious 🫰🏽 Ashé Aho Salamat Po! #tributur2024 #kularts #souljourney #philippines #kalinga #maguindanaon #tboli #lovespeakproductions #audiopharmacyprescriptions
