TRAKA 2024 - WoW what a ride 👏🏼 200K, +2500M of dirty roads and I absolutely loved every centimeter. 🙌🏼 This race was my first proper race after I broke my ankle in Scotland exactly one year ago. This was also my first gravel race of my life and I was in for a treat. It was fast right from the start and I really wanted to use this race as a status check on form and ankle for the season, so I just went for it. 💨 It’s a very good feeling to look down on your legs and they just kept surprising me and they just kept going. Although I wasn’t allowed on the bike until January, I really felt the hours I spent in the muscle gym, were spent wisely. 🏋🏼♀️ Bike did awesome, body did great and mind was strong. Besides one busted back tire, everything went super smoothly and I finished 35th out of 140 strong females and many of them pro cyclists. Maaaan it’s good to be racing again! 💃🏼 Honored and proud to represent @laufcycles at @thetraka 2024! Coach-athlete and friends 😊 One of the things I love most about being a coach is to be able to ride and race with the athletes. With @101percent_training I’ve been coaching @and.ohl for a little more than a year, and it’s been a real honor. It’s hard to find a more dedicated rider, and I was really proud of seeing he’s performance among top riders in @thetraka 360, he finished in the top 30, but definitely had a top 20 result in within reach - which would be a an amazing result, especially considering his busy full time job in the music industry. My plan was to start at @3rides.aachen after I had to skip @thetraka because of the flu, but unfortunately I’m still not 100% - so I’ll have to stay at home and won’t be able to start. This flu is really messing up all my plans. It’s hard to deal with the fact that you train hard and sacrifice a lot in the build-up to be as fit as possible for your highlights, and then you get the flu and it ruins everything. I know I was really fit before I got it, so I will just do my best to be in the best possible shape for @unboundgravel . Thanks to my coach @life.of_seb who really keeps me calm and focused. As I always say „trust the process“ - even if it’s hard sometimes. Ein paar persönliche Erkenntnisse zum @thetraka und generell zur Region Girona: - Ich bin mit einer ziemlich negativen Grundeinstellung in das The Traka 360 gestartet. Nachdem ich gehört habe, dass die Strecke 1000 Höhenmeter weniger als 2023 und außerdem eine Schiebepassage enthält, hat mir das die Vorfreude ganz schön verhagelt. Im Nachhinein habe ich mich da viel zu sehr reingesteigert. Ich hätte mich darüber ärgern und es ansprechen können, aber dann auch gut sein lassen sollen. - Der Widerspruch, dass das The Traka seitens des Veranstalters immer wieder als "non-competitive" bezeichnet wird, gleichzeitig aber ein extrem wichtiges Rennen ist und so auch von den Top-Fahrern gesehen wird, war in der Realität noch krasser als gedacht. In Wahrheit ist das The Traka vermutlich auch für den Veranstalter das wohl wichtigste Gravelrennen in Europa. Das sollte man so auch kommunizieren. - Auch wenn ich die Schiebepassage und den "non-competitive"-Widerspruch sehr kritisch sehe, hat der Veranstalter ein wahnsinnig tolles Event auf die Beine gestellt! So kurzfristig noch Streckenänderungen durch den tagelangen Dauerregen im Vorfeld durchführen zu müssen, stelle ich mir extrem schwierig vor. Da wurde super reagiert. Dass das 560-Kilometer-Race abgesagt wurde, war meiner Meinung nach eine richtige und mutige Entscheidung. Man muss nicht immer erst abwarten, bis etwas Schlimmes passiert. Die Feed Zones waren extrem gut, die Streckenposten und Helfer alle wahnsinnig freundlich! - Mit einem Trinkrucksack zu fahren war eine Erfahrung, auf die ich auch verzichten könnte. Es ging zwar erstaunlich gut, aber für mich ist ein Rucksack in einem Radrennen ein Widerspruch in sich. - Die Region Girona ist landschaftlich wahnsinnig schön! Außerdem habe ich mich nicht einmal in Südfrankreich als Radsportler auf der Straße so respektiert gefühlt. Etwas abschreckend finde ich den übertriebenen Lokalpatriotismus. Für den mag es seine Gründe geben, viel anfangen kann ich damit trotzdem nicht. - Direkt nach dem Traka habe ich gesagt, dass ich nie wieder an den Start gehen werde. It's time to wrap up The #traka 2024, Girona project. Wow, what a success. Girona has something for every type of cyclist, from serious mountain biking to plenty of gravel action, all set in an atmosphere that exudes a great vibe. The event itself delivered, and the cyclists generally showcased impressive skills. Technology definitely had its hiccups, with multiple punctures and digital panic when GPS maps went haywire, but that's all part of the experience. @thetraka what a day it was started, off at 5 AM waking up off to the start, and there I had the best support crew @kostovyoan and some @trektravel people. The traka was a must do and another year and I’m very glad I spent a full day with friends, family and old friends from the @redhookcrit days! I had a puncture at km7 and not enough plugs to fix it but, once again @eddytheeagle037 saving the day for second year in a row and giving me some plugs in top of els Angels. Mentally exhausted I decided to stop at the second feed station and make my way to @doskiwisbrewing with my sister and her husband for the best beer I’ve ever had. First #Traka 200 in the books 🤝 Standing at the start line with slightly swollen tonsils and a wheezing bronchial tube, I wasn’t sure what to expect of my performance. Luckily, my legs felt strong, and I finished 34th out of 132 W. Racing with an infected throat? Not my first rodeo, and probably not my last. For those who might not know, I fell incredibly ill last October with mononucleosis (Epstein–Barr virus), and unfortunately, this disease continues to leave a heavy mark on my immune system. From Oct to Dec, I dealt with chronic bronchitis, which continues to affect me during races to this day. Oct, Nov, Dec, & Jan I constantly fell sick, even after a simple indoor ride sesh. With recurring tonsil infections, long-lasting bronchitis, strepthroat, & the occasional fever, I eventually lost count of the number of times I went to the doctor’s. Not one doctor suspected mono after months of illness; I was simply given antibiotics/ibupro & sent home with no concrete solution or answers. Finally, after a blood test at the end of January, I was relieved to find out what was going on with my health and immune system: mono. Unfortunately there is no cure for mono; all it requires is rest. So that’s what I tried my best to do. I rested, focused on my health, and gradually got back into training, managing to rebuild my strength. After only being back on the bike for barely three months, I’m happy to feel so strong though my breathing isn’t. Unfortunately after three healthy months, the day before Traka, my tonsils and bronchial tube randomly started to act up again. Unsure whether from the pollen or just falling sick again, I took the day to rest, get a good night’s sleep, and hoped for the best the next day. It’s been hard going through such a rollercoaster for so long; it can really affect your confidence on the start line and take a toll on one’s mental health. However, experiencing @thetraka this week and meeting such great people has helped reignite that racing spark I felt I lost and made me remember why I love gravel racing so much. My appetite is back & im hungry for more. But now, it’s time to rest from this two-day fever and throat infection 💤🛌
