Trekland Trip Aj tento rok sme v spolupráci so Správou TANAPu - Tatranská Lomnica uskutočnili Trekland Trip, na ktorom sme zalesňovali v Podbanskom oblasť s 1000 kusmi mladých sadeničiek stomčekov. Tento rok to boli jedličky, javory, smrekovce a smreky. Ďakujeme všetkým, ktorí sa zúčastnili. Nebolo to v tomto teréne úplne jednoduché ani teraz, ale ako vždy sme to parádne zvládli. Let's all wish a HAPPY 101st BIRTHDAY to the legendary Ralph Senensky, director of the classic TOS eps "The Paradise Syndrome," “Metamorphosis," "Bread and Circuses," “Obsession," "Return To Tomorrow," and "Is There In Truth No Beauty?"...and the only director ever to have been fired (wrongly!) from a Star Trek — midway through "The Tholian Web", merely as a scapegoat. I had tried but fallen short to chat with Ralph several times in recent years, until finally as mid-post-pandemic times opened up we made it work back in 2021, seen here at his beautiful home on the Central Coast. How much can you cover in two hours? Well, you heard a lot of it on The Trek Files in Seasons 7, 8, and 9...and he shared another hour with my Portal 47 community too! Ralph had a huge career outside for Trek of course, from “Dr. Kildare” through and including a huge chunk of “The Walttons.” He was burned by his Tholian experience — new Paramount exec Douglas S. Kramer thought he’d make an example of Ralph when the new Tholian space suits caused a huge (but overcome-able) delay — and did not speak about it for years, until actors in a live theatre cast came out as Trekkies and convinced him to talk. And now he shares as much as he can, live, with us, and online in his blog, Ralph’s Cinema Trek. The TOS ranks are thinning, but we are so privileged to have Ralph here and sharing with us. What an honor to have helped him catch up with a new and appreciative audience. Happy memorial birthday to Charles Washburn, the first-ever African-American to be a 2nd assistant director in Hollywood, in 1967 ... after having been the first black admitted and then graduated from the Director’s Guild of America trainee program the year before. Adding in the fact that both feats happened via the original Desilu Star Trek makes me doubly proud and honored to have known this Treklander, and hopefully helped to share his story and his person. “When I started at Desilu, there were only three black employees on the whole lot,” Charlie told me once: “Nichelle Nichols, myself, and the guy who had the food truck — who closed it up after lunch and then shined shoes.” I have my own interviews with Charlie archived, but thankfully he himself had done the same with Star Trek buddies like director Joe Pevney and others, before they passed. It was all for a chapter or two or three he’d completed for his book-to-be, entitled “Charlie Star Trek”— his nickname from back in the day, from the way everyone at Desilu heard his greeting as he answered the onstage phone. There’s a lot of history preserved there — and lots from succeeding shows as well that hopefully will come to light. What might stick in my mind most of all, perhaps, is the joy on Charlie’s face the night I got him over for that nationwide 40th Anniversary remastered screening of “The Menagerie,” and fans in Burbank swarmed him in the lobby after he’d been introduced as the icon he was. For my part, I’ll help get his words, deeds, and legacy out to any Trek fans and film buffs I can, in any media that works. That’s the least we can do for ourselves… and for Charlie Star Trek. (And yes, the role of damage control team member Lt. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our latest rock star of the Trek production art world, Picard Season 2-3 art director and Enterprise-D re-creation hero — Liz Kloczkowski! Throwback waaaay back...to nine months ago, when I was happy to create and host a panel including Liz get an SRO reaction and half-hour autograph line at San Diego Comic-Con. We’d had her as a guest in Portal 47 already, but SDCC wound up being a first major stop, with STLV even moreso a couple weeks later, in what turned out to be a year-long parade of fan love for that amazing marathon of relentless diligence (and lots of overtime) that yielded the memorable recreation of the “D” bridge for the two-part S3 Picard finale. I would love to have shared a selfie from that storied set... but alas, no. Let’s just hope we can have a legit try once it finally comes out of storage again, wherever that is in the future! Of course, Liz had worked on Season 2 Picard as well, and had a career building even before Trek. Beyond all this, it’s been fun to watch that fandom-wide reaction — as well as for the whole team of “newbies” and golden-age art staffers all assembled by production designer Dave Blass —that’s blown up this year and helped pile on to the call for what is dubbed “Star Trek: Legacy.” (Plus, she’s one mean cosplayer still turning up at cons and renfaires, too— check her Insta!) Meanwhile, I'm just saying it’s been fun to help get her to fans, get to know Liz’s hard work, relentless attention to detail and killer since of humor… and I’ll join you all in wishing her all the best in years to come. HAPPY BIRTHDAY today to the great Herman Zimmerman — the quiet and yet influential production designer who had such an impact on the roof of Trek since Star Trek V and the pilot of TNG — through all the remaining “prime” movies...and DS9 and Enterprise! Flashback here to the 2018 premiere of the DS9 documentary, ""What We Left Behind"" — not busy on a set or the art department back in the day, but amid the crowd enjoying the screening at the Paramount studio theater. As much an impact as the art influence he created were the people he brought aboard. In fact, all those art hero folks Dave Blass invited back to work on Picard S2-S3 were pretty much all Herman's original hires. But even more than design — and knowing how to marshal his people for the most input and creativity — Herman was also ingenious in the warehousing and reuse and redressing of set pieces of all kinds, and leveraging movie budget design and construction for the TV series’ benefit...getting even more “bang for the buck” from the budgets of his day. On top of all that, he is such a nice guy, always helpful to me with interviews and events, and so thoughtful to have me as an archive consultant for the big projects like the ST World Tour, Science Tour, and other park events. All this from his start as an assistant art director at NBC Burbank for the soap ""Days of Our Lives!"" No wonder the Art Director Guild bestowed him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. Za mojim chrbtom sa nachádzajú Babky ⛰️ (ten najvyšší). Nenápadný vrch v Západných Tatrách, ktorý však po jeho vyjdení očarí kruhovým výhľadom na Liptovskú Maru a Nízke Tatry. Počas kráčania Kvačianskou dolinou pred pár dňami som si túto túru vybavila pred očami a s úsmevom na ňu spomínam. Na vrch Babky (1566 m) sme vybehli s kamoškou Lesi (pozdravujem 🙋🏼♀️) pred 1,5 rokom, kedy sme boli vo Vysokých Tatrách cez Trekland vysádzať stromčeky. Tie boli nakoniec tak rýchlo vysadené, že sme stihli obed v drevenici aj prechádzku Kvačianskou dolinou k Mlynom v Oblazoch. Na druhý deň si ešte vybehli na vrch Babky z chatovej oblasti pri Bobroveckej Vápenici. Najbližší termín vysádzania 1000 stromčekov 🌲🌲🌲, tentokrát na Podbánskom, sa bude konať 11. mája 2024, ale kvôli sprievodcovskému kurzu sa ho nemôžem zúčastniť. Mám tu nejakých nadšencov, ktorí by sa tejto dobrovoľníckej aktivity radi zúčastnili (sponzorom je Fjälläven)? HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the Oscar-winning Doug Drexler...and you’ll blink when I remind you that award was for make-up (on the Dick Tracy team) — not for glorious CGI ships and graphics which came later (along with two Emmys while on the Battlestar Galactica VFX team)! And let’s not forget all those little projects, topped by the DS9 Tech Manual and of course co-editing and contributing to the annual Ships of the Line calendar. Throwback here to his birthday (or soon after) in 1999...and a little birthday party for Dougie trying to look busy at his station in the DS9 art department. It’s amazing they found room to tie down the balloons — not just at his desk, but anywhere in a room *full* of stations for the famous Trek art family whose desks ALL looked just like this — only different. 😄 Flash forward to 2022, when Doug and several of that storied team were amazingly back doing projects for Star Trek: Picard Seasons 2-3, courtesy of a reachout from production designer Dave Blass. And don't miss his work on the Trek love-fest that is The Orville. Art, life, and Trek are all through Doug's socials, and you ought to follow him on Instagram or even Facebook. HAPPY BIRTHDAY in memoriam to the great Dorothy “D.C.” Fontana, onetime “girl Friday” assistant to Gene Roddenberry who went on to establish her own writing career, advancing to Story Editor on Star Trek in a 1960s man’s Hollywood with classic Spock (and McCoy) stories like “This Side of Paradise” and “Journey to Babel.” That means she not only created Sarek and Amanda (and Joanna McCoy for that matter), but the Andorians and Tellarites — and the Orions as pirates, as well. Yet for every one of her ten TOS credits, though, there are a ton of uncredited rewrites. As showrunner for Season 1 of The Animated Series, she insisted on live-action quality in the scripts...and gave us her own foundational “Yesteryear.” She was on staff and helped launch The Next Generation with the initial non-Q bulk of the pilot episode — and even had shared credit for DS9’s early “Dax” as well. Dorothy, who would have been 85 today, passed in late 2019 — just eight months after her second batch of episodes we recorded for The Trek Files. I’m so glad we had her for those, and for all the other conversations we had in recent years. As I say, she had me so spoiled as a direct-memory pipeline to the 1960s and afterward — especially after producer Bob Justman’s passing in 2008. I’m just always amazed she was so ho-hum about dealing with Hollywood as a woman, resorting to her famous initials “D.C.” as a tool to get her foot in the door of general production misogyny. She was always a writer first — but was never a stranger to fandom and conventions, sharing her calm insight and craft along with the crazy of production from all those around her. Thousands of fans enjoyed her at conventions over the years — especially in the 1970s when con promoters were smart enough to have her — and that legacy is a landmark, too. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our “other birthday” for March 22 — the guy I’ve called “the nicest guy in Hollywood” for 30+ years (and a true makeup pioneer and genius) — Michael Westmore! The Oscar winner and 11-time Emmy awardee (5 for Trek) was a huge help in getting the TNG Companion out the door in each rushed edition. And now you can add this year‘s Vanguard Award life achievement recognition from his Makeup and Hair Guild peers — plus a new documentary on the way, telling the story of the entire Westmore family legacy as well as his own. Throwback here to the storied last day of shooting Enterprise — and yeah, while the episode is now infamous, the scene with all the guest extras like me was indeed a memorable “graduation day” experience I’ll never forget. Mike was a big part of that, helping age me and a lot of the guests with more makeup and hair looks than we deserved. Mike was one of few creative department heads to work ALL series of the Berman era from 1987 to this day here in 2005 — 25 long, 26-episode seasons — and all 4 TNG movies. And his influence in not only design but production-savvy and staff management continues to be felt by Trek’s current crop of makeup designers and techs…many of them his protégés. His book “MakeUp Man” is required reading and fills you in not only on his Trek but of his grandfather and uncles — the famous Westmore family who dominated Hollywood . Plus his own Hollywood career pre-Trek —when working with the likes of Liz Taylor, Sylvester Stallone, Robert de Niro, and many more.
