3 Degrees Hotter 🥵🎓👩🏽🏫 B.A. in Africana Studies B.A. in Communications (conc. In Mass Media) B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (conc. Film Productions) Today I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a BA in Africana Studies, a BA in Communications with a concentration in Mass Media, and a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Film and Media Productions. During my 5 years in attendance, I served on the executive board for the Black Student Union as the Historian (2019-2022), as well as the executive board for the NAACP (UNCC Chapter) as the Public Relations Chair (2022-2023). In addition to my role in activism, I also worked as the Student Assistant for Gender and Diversity and founded a student safe space specified for the LGBT + BIPOC community on campus called “For Us” through the Office of Identity, Equity, and Engagement. While engaging in community activism, I also served as a Mentor in the SAFE Peer Mentoring Program, where I was able to make a more direct impact on mentees through academic and social support. All of these accomplishments I’ve gained through my college years were all undeniably remarkable to experience, but I don’t think anything ever mattered to me as much as hearing my brothers say “I want to be just like you and graduate college too!” That’s what it was all about. Let them see it up close, so they know it’s real. Show them what dedication and focus looks like. Challenge them to question their surroundings and think outside the box. I really appreciate my digital marketing class and what I’m learning this semester especially in terms of social media, I loved this hobby as a teenager Here’s one thing, social media is for making a statement, and by God do I make many. Personal accounts are for personal statements, obviously. I’ve also learned how Instagram is specifically designed for influencers and in a sense art, and all the new features that have been added since the last time I really played with it only show that. Every picture tells a story. Every word creates an image. Every song enhances a feeling. Sydney Owen (B.A. in Criminology/Criminal Justice, Biological Sciences, and Chemistry ’21) is a Criminalistics Lab Technician at the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. During her undergrad, Sydney was an ALLIES in STEM Student Worker, which helped her build connections and conduct research through the STEM Academy. Since she was able to triple major in undergrad, Sydney enjoys her current position because it allows her to combine her studies by working in both a laboratory and the criminal justice field. One piece of advice she has for current students is: “If you already know what field you want to go in, plan out the classes you need ahead of time. It will help you later.”

Congratulations to Adri Boudrieau, the College of Humanities Outstanding Senior of Spring’22! Adri is a TRIPLE major in Classics, Anthropology, and Art History. Wow. Her specific interests include museum studies, the colonial and plundered history of art and artifacts, and archaeological research. To celebrate this great accomplishment -and hopefully reveal her secret- she will be giving a speech at the college’s convocation on May 13. For now, Adri tells us a little bit about her passions moving through the UA and onward; 🎓🎓🎓 I originally entered the University studying engineering and soon found that was not the path for me. I have always loved classical mythology, and decided to pursue Classics as a field of study. From there, I fell in love with Anthropology, and specifically archaeology, and being able to study people and culture so vastly different from the modern western culture I grew up in. I love cultures and how diverse people are throughout history and today. Art history felt like the logical next step, as the three fields often overlap. However, throughout my studies I learned about the harmful and dark side of these fields, as archaeology, art history, and museums have deep colonial ties and histories of looting, as well as massive misrepresentations of cultures and people. These fields and the world are changing, and I want to be a part of that change, especially in museums where repatriation and education efforts work to address the wounds of the past and do better into the future by critically examining collections and uplifting minority voices.
