It’s been a long road to recovery, and today was day one of the second phase of what feels like is going to be an even longer road. Now that my fracture has healed completely, I started physical therapy- the first step of training to try to get back to where I was eight weeks ago. Today was rough. In all the chaos and all the noise, I’d like to remind everybody on #internationalwomensday that we need to be in support of the change that is happening in front of our eyes. You may not agree with why @f1academy is needed in theory, but in principal we need to show the young girls that this is ok, this is the norm, this is the future. Women can race, and they will. These 15 racers may or may not reach @f1 - but there’s a bigger picture here. Without them, it may never happen. Believe. I want to see a woman in Formula 1 in my lifetime, and to do that we need to change perceptions. We need to make change happen. So today of all days, let’s watch F1 Academy, support it, push it, remember how far these incredible athletes and organisers have come to make this dream a reality. One day, we’ll get to the point where there’s a half dozen women or so on the grids of F2, F3, FRegional, F4 and I for one can’t wait. But to get there, numbers must increase and this is one of the steps we take to see that happen. It’s happening, whether you like it or not. And as a man in the sport I love, I am proud to say it’s about bloody time the world realised, your caveman responses are just that. If your opinion is merely to knock down, chastise and to hate, then your opinion is useless - it’s all been heard before for 130 years in motorsport. Enough now. Women are essential in motorsport. Hi, y'all! Here's my face again. I really need to take photos that aren't selfies. I find it hard to like photos that someone else took of me because there's usually so much that isn't right – the angle, the lighting, my expression. That should be another goal for next year: getting used to more things being imperfect, including photos of myself. I know I look all smiley here, but the reality is that it's the heaviest school week of the term. I've been glued to my table for the past 36 hours, wearing a hoodie, sweats, a tichel, and wrapped up like a burrito in a @swaddlebee 😊 There are moments where I feel like this is too much – too many papers to write, too many assignments, too much to do at home; it feels impossible. And on repeat, I just keep saying one foot in front of the next. Slowly, slowly, I'll get there. This post serves multiple purposes – firstly, as a lovely distraction from the paper I'm writing 🙄, but also as a future reminder of where I was. When I get to midpoint, start my internship, when I, iyH, graduate, I'll look back at this moment and remember sitting here, tired, and overwhelmed. I'll be so proud that I just kept moving despite the challenge. So, I'm going to hang in there, and for those of you struggling with a task, I ask you to hang in there too. I had no idea we bought a Beachcomber House till chatting to a few of our new neighbours this week😱 The guy next door goes to me 'I absolutely love your house, the classic Beachcomber style' Being a total rookie said thanks and had no idea what he was talking about. Well…I didn’t drown. I guess that’s a good thing. So some random thoughts on my first triathlon. Swimming in open water with a hundred other people kicking and blocking your path is much different than swimming in a pool. Lots of stops and pauses to move or find your line or to make sure you weren’t drifting off course. All in all the swim wasn’t as physically challenging as I’d anticipated (more mental) but I still have a long long way to go before I feel comfortable attempting September’s 1.2 mile swim (today was only 500m). The time I took in transition area peeling off the wetsuit (and getting my legs back underneath me) was almost half the time it took to do my swim. Not that I was going for time goals but lots to improve upon there. The 16 mile bike was the easy part today. I felt pretty good after the first mile or two and was able to push the pace a bit, although getting passed by some freak on a folding commuter bike was certainly a blow to the ego. I did have some numbness in my fingers and toes so I may need to make some cockpit adjustments over the summer to put myself in a slightly different position. The run! Oh my. This was supposed to be my strong point….and it was “only” a 5k! Well, I really did not enjoy todays run course. It was basically an out and back and anyone who knows me knows I HATE multiple loop and out and back courses. But I’m going to have to get used to these because a lot of tris have loop courses. And to say it was muggy and humid this morning would be an understatement, I was soaked in sweat head to toe and definitely struggled with the heat index today. All in all, it was a very good first time experience that was absolutely necessary before September’s big one. It showed me how much more work I still have to go. It gave me some more open water experience. It gave some transition area practice and etiquette.
