So the last day of Urban Sketching Week #uskweek2024 fell on my 30th birthday 🥳 what better way to celebrate than heading into the city with my sketchbook and watercolour palette? This is the Vampire Rabbit sculpture on a doorway behind the Cathedral Buildings close to the city centre - I heard about it recently and just had to paint it. At the weekend I attended the national #urbansketchers event in #Coventry hosted by #coventrysketchers My photos here are poor (dying camera phone and too much sun) but they document a few of the #drawings I combined to fill what I am told is a 4 metre long concertina. Includes @coventry_cathedral and @the_herbert_cov and also shows one throw down and the moment when @laine_bob announced that next year's national #urbansketching gathering will be in #Newcastle over the weekend of 21st June 2024. Hosted by us lot, the #UrbanSketchersTyneandWear I might photograph my drawings better and repost one day, but people were very nice to me about my style, and I was so focused on my own effort that I failed to even ask for names let alone work out whose work was whose. There were many and diverse sketching styles in play, genuinely inspiring. Reaffirmed my love of the #urbansketch community and of the value of this as an art and social practice. It was too sunny though, I'm sunburnt. Ps. I remain committed to and touch base through the social street encounters I get as an #urbansketcher : I had such spontaneous responses, learnt local history, met ppl I would never otherwise meet. No one called the police on me this time but I did share some time with a man so overcome with life that, well I shouldn't say what, but trapped in violent thoughts. And then as if to rebalance that I looked up just 5 minutes later and a 7yr old girl was smiling at me holding out an ice cream for me from the packet she and her dad had just got. These are just 2 examples of Coventry streetlife. Many of the buildings and spaces we drew arre due for demolition again, so our collective record is also a unique slice of Coventry's material and social history. If anyone knows a way to share/archive my own contribution, dm me. I am trying to distribute my drawings and escape the possession of them.

I’ve been waiting for an excuse to try out my new watercolour set for a month now, and finally decided to finish off this sketch from last year’s trip to Italy. Hurriedly sketched in the Piazza Grande in Arezzo between drinks and snacks, I didn’t have time to add colour on the day. Some of the line work is very rough, which was frustrating to work with a year later, but I’m glad I finally finished it.
