I never cease learning from the Masters. This small oil on panel, is inspired by a detail from Nicolas Poussin’s beautiful Deposition. Despite not being religious, and despite often being overly mindblown by the excesses of some Baroque painting, I am in awe of Poussin’s work in this field. I have chosen to use a much more modernist approach to colour, palette, application and composition. Having said that, I wanted to maintain some of the static beauty of this most powerful of scenes. My recent oil sketch of St Michael’s Church, Angel Meadow, Manchester, as it stood, in 1931. I have a strong family connection to this district, and despite the fact that it inspired both Engels and Dickens to write of its notoriously grinding poverty and crime, I have chosen to depict it in an ice cream palette with loose brushwork. I was quite keen to get movement into the Manchester sky. A Trip Down Memory Lane with David Smith’s Original Collection Growing up in a city and surrounded by heavy industry and being influenced by Lowry has inspired David to create stylised paintings and of life in an early-to-mid 20th in industrial British cities. These are full of everyday life with smoking chimneys, crowds going to football matches, with brands and adverts from the era on the sides of buildings. The bears came home! So after a looong 6 weeks ish of having flu/covid/sinusitis and not getting much of anything done I got the bears home from the kiln and they are lovely 🐻 💚 also it was warm enough (and dry and not windy!!!) to take some shots outside. Feeling very behind on everything and out of the loop especially with my garden which hasn’t been touched at all.
