I’ve had this goofy coat of curls by my side for 11 years. I remember this night so vividly, 11 years ago, sitting in my living room in Athens on the phone with Gloria and Kelsey (his breeders) as he and his four brothers and sisters came into this world. We joked about what my puppy’s name would be (definitely NOT Waylon), and I was brimming with excitement at all of the possibility, the potential, the lifetime of adventures we might have. I thought we’d spend a decade trialing in agility and obedience. I could never have dreamed where life would actually take us. Shooter was my first purpose-bred dog. Choosing to bring him into my life was a years-long process, full of conversations with breeders, handling and training dozens of poodles, researching pedigrees and bloodlines, and a budding friendship and mentorship with his breeder. I’d been waiting years for his litter to be born, knowing what type of puppy I wanted and what type of pairing it would take to bring him to life. That pairing had finally happened, and my new best friend breathed his first breath on January 8, 2013. Since then, with him by my side, I’ve experienced: Hundreds of miles on foot. Thousands of miles on pavement. Hundreds of waterfalls and summits. Dozens of states. More houses than I can remember. Two college degrees. A handful of careers. Losing myself, then finding myself again. A few hard-won performance and conformation titles, including a Total Dog Award, before both of us lost interest. Eleven years. I graduated high school in May, 2007 and promptly got a job and moved out of my childhood home. I began working as a “kennel tech” at a veterinary and boarding facility in Statesboro, Georgia, a job I kept for the next two years while studying biology at @georgiasouthernuniversity. The only dogs I’d ever been around prior to this job were farm dogs— cattle dogs and shepherds— and hunting dogs, treeing walker coonhounds mostly. I was absolutely enthralled with all of the different breeds we saw at the kennel: Bouvier des Flandres, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Akitas, Basenjis, Xoloitzcuintlis, and English Bulldogs became a normal part of my day. But I’ll never forget the first time a local family brought their three beautifully kept standard poodles in to board for the weekend. I was captivated by these silly, goofy, sweet dogs! I’d never seen anything like them. Honestly, I didn’t even know poodles came in this size. After that, I always looked forward to seeing them whenever they’d come in to spend a few nights, but I never would have dreamed I’d some day own a standard poodle of my own. In 2009 I moved to Athens and was volunteering as a puppy raiser for the @guidedogfoundation while studying animal science at the @universityofga, raising Labrador and Golden Retrievers to assist the visually impaired. I began to realize the dogs were making me sick, and allergy testing confirmed I was, tragically, allergic to dogs. I relayed this information to the Foundation and they suggested I try raising a standard poodle. I had no idea poodles could be guide dogs, and I also had no idea how this would help. They explained that poodles are less allergenic than other breeds, so I put my name on the list for a puppy. February of 2010 brought my first baby curls into my life. Crystal was a challenging puppy, but I knew from the moment I met her that I’d never own another breed of dog again. She was smart and sassy, and didn’t make me sick. I was hooked. I’ve loved dozens of curly coats since then, but possibly none so much as this one. This sweet, goofy, thoughtful old man has my whole heart and soul wrapped up in his. Aaron had a happy 4 days at the Sacramento Kennel Club dog show and best of all mom signed him up for 4 Fast Cat runs. The coolest guy in town is 10 years old today. That’s ten years of adventures, hundreds of miles on foot, and thousands of miles by vehicle with this fella by my side for most of them. Something happens when you love a dog for this long; it’s almost like they become an extension of you. When we hike, Shooter is an extension of my eyes and ears and nose. He helps me find the best routes and keep watch for wildlife. At home or on the road, he stays on alert for intruders or squirrels or stray cats, he keeps me warm on cold nights and grumbles a lot about me interrupting his sleep. Our communication is conversational these days, rather than commanding. I stand by my opinion that we do dogs a disservice by calling them ”fur babies” or “our children” — Shooter is a full grown adult, capable of making his own mostly sound decisions, and he lives alongside me as an equal — if non-contributing — member of my household. He’s my best friend. Our proudest moment to date by far! Blue has earned the Versatility Certificate Excellent award given by Versatility in Poodles, Inc.(Poodle Club of America has no versatility program)! This title requires 15 points total with at least one in 4 different categories. He earned points for conformation, obedience, rally, temperament, tricks, coursing ability tests, and dock diving. He accomplished all of this at just 22 months old. I am of course biased, but he is exactly what I wanted when I set out to get a versatile sport dog, and so much more. I am so thankful to Debbie Swartz, Evelyn Comer, and Tom Comer for their years of experience and hard work in the breed, sleepless nights whelping & raising puppies, and for trusting me with such an incredible dog for my first poodle. I will never be able to thank them enough for all they have done for Blue and I. This is just the beginning! I can’t wait to see where Blue takes me next in dog sports. Good boy Blue! 💙

I decided to get it in gear and do some obedience training today. We worked on pivoting in heel position and finding front. This dog is going to kill me one of these days.... One reason to video your training sessions is not so much to see what the DOG is doing as to see what YOU are doing. And I can see here that I'm not standing squarely in front of the platform, which doesn't do him any favors in learning a straight front. Also, if I could hold my hand properly when working on pivots, it would be nice. Once I reminded him that the game is to get on the platform with all four feet, I tried a technique that @denise_fenzi calls a nose bridge to encourage him to get close to me. For all his love of jumping up at me, he can be sensitive to the pressure of coming into a tight front. For a dog that hasn't worked on heeling or fronts for... well, a long time, I was pretty happy with how much he actually remembered. Simon has had maybe a dozen nosework training sessions from his first imprint session to this one. They have been scattered about here and there, sometimes with long gaps between them. This was the second session where I really feel like he's caught on to the game, and has figured out that he's supposed to find a specific odor and then let me know that he's found it. And yes, we will need to work on a "Nose, not feet!" alert behavior pretty soon. I couldn’t be prouder of Quil. Today we received the news from Versatility in Poodles that Quil earned her Versatility Certificate Masters (VCM) !!!! We started working on Simon's Advanced Trick Dog title from Do More With Your Dog today, as well as his Intermediate Trick dog from the American Kennel Club. This was also his first ever session of doing weave poles. I remember the joy and pride I felt the moment I held Scully’s first ribbon, earned for passing her Canine Good Citizen test. It was the exhilarating moment I knew there was so much more we could do. From there we moved forward with our two remaining CGCs, started taking agility classes, earned some trick dog titles, and dipped our toes in the water of sports with our first Fast CAT event. The unbridled joy of our first event was a gateway drug. We dove head first into the water and tried everything under the sun. Dock Diving, Rally, Scent Work, Barn Hunt, and whatever we could find. Scully excelled at everything. There wasn’t a sport she tried that she wasn’t fantastic at. She did all of this, often having a class for a different sport every day of the week, on top of her regular work as a service dog. She truly was the definition of versatility. So when I found out she could be awarded for that, I made it our ultimate goal. Now here we are, 22 titles down, with our first big rosette in hand (and paw), and I couldn’t be prouder of her. But more than the ribbons, more than the titles and bragging rights, I’m proud of her for being my partner. When she wiggles so hard doing a dropped item retrieval that she has to take a couple shots at getting it to my hand, I couldn’t be prouder. When she tackles me to the grown the second I shed a single tear, and licks my face so hard she knocks my glasses off, my heart swells with pride. When she makes whatever judge she’s performing for smile and laugh so hard their cheeks hurt, I find myself loving her more than I knew was possible. Of the poodle, the AKC states that “beneath the curly, low-allergen coat is an elegant athlete and companion for all reasons and seasons… Poodles are eager, athletic, and wickedly smart dogs of remarkable versatility.” Down to the marrow of her bones, Scully exemplifies this in every way. Season Opener Dock Diving 2022 What a fun weekend at the Columbus Pet Expo. We had 9 total Qualifying Jumps over 2 days, 8 in Distance Jump and 1 in HydroDash. Even setting multiple PRs and earning a new title! Before this weekend her best distance jump was 15’3”. Saturday she jumped 16’6”, then today she jumped a 17’3” and then followed up with a 18’3”!!!!! Additionally, she dropped over 4 seconds in HydroDash! Outside of Dock Diving she also had some fun on the lure course they had set up and settled like a champ in the food court and hotel. Finding a breeder for your future puppy can be exciting, stressful and overwhelming. There is so much information out there that contradicts each other. There are some amazing sources that can help clear up what to look for in a good poodle breeder. PCA UPA BetterBred AviDog Puppy Culture Versatility in Poodles OFA AKC/UKC/CKC Below I will list the MINIMUM recommendations for ethical breeders. Health Testing: The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) has an amazing program called the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC). Dogs can earn CHIC certification if they meet the minimum recommendations from PCA. All breeding dogs should have their CHIC certification. Enrichment Protocol: There are multiple enrichment protocols that breeders can use and you want to see AT LEAST one of these, though many breeders use a combination. Enrichment protocols during puppyhood can prepare a dog for the rest of their lives. It can impact them not only mentally but physically as well! Titling: Titling is often overlooked as an important component to an ethical breeder. Titling is a third party verifying the information your breeder is telling you. Similar to having an inspector exam your house! You don’t just go off the word of the seller, you want someone with no skin in the game to verify that information. That is titling! I decided to try something new with Simon today. Considering this is only his second ever track, that it's been over four years since I've taken a dog tracking, and even longer since I've tracked with a completely novice dog, I don't think we did TOO bad. I forgot to record his first track, mainly because I was so flustered about a loose dog that was with some people at the park. Luckily, he didn't steal the bait from the track, and went back to (and stayed with) them when they called. Quil’s First Barn Hunt Trial This weekend was an absolute blast for both Quil and I! We had previously done a try it a little while back to see how Quil liked it. This weekend proved that this sport is something she absolutely LOVES. She earned her RATI and RATN as well as 2 high in class and 3 1st places. I thought her first run (not videoed) was almost perfect at 29 seconds, but Quil quickly let me know she had bigger plans. Her next run she ran 22seconds and her final Q to earn her title was 16.46seconds!!!!! I love how happy she gets while doing this sport and I think she was disappointed how quickly it was over her last run. It’s been over a week since I lost access to @adventurelikeagirl. Things I’ve done: • called Instagram support line— dead end. We found the waterfall that eluded us last time. ——— Hike 20/52 #KA500 157/500 Hike length: 1.2 Elevation gain: 241ft Yearly miles:87.5 ——— In January 2020 I made a half-baked attempt at finding Middle Creek Falls. At the time I was still very green at route-finding to off-trail waterfalls. I’m pretty sure this was the first one I attempted, and I gave up after a quarter-mile of rhodo crawling. Today, equipped with another year of skill and knowledge acquisition, I made another attempt. ——— I don’t know what I was expecting to find but it wasn’t this. Kevin’s book describes this waterfall using the word “disappointing.” I beg to differ. I was blown away by this waterfall! No photo I took today shows the sheer magnitude and power of it. It was impossible to take a clear photo because of the constant heavy spray coming off it, but the spray made the entire setting magical, creating rainbows and nourishing an environment on the nearby slopes and rocks for lush moss and ferns to grow.
