I started packing today. I have four shifts left on my current contract and I’ll be finished with Maine. Measuring my life in 13-week increments is wild. It’s long enough to begin to feel comfortable, for the novelty to wear off. But it’s too short to see everything, to experience all that a place has to offer. Thirteen weeks is a season, or bits of two if you’re lucky. It reminds me of college, measuring years in semesters. Basing decisions and making plans based on x’s on a calendar. I’d be lying if I said I’ve loved my time here. I wanted to, for sure. I’ve wanted to visit Maine for a long time. I think I came here during the worst possible 13 weeks of the year to be here. Most of the days have been gray and wet and cold. Restaurants haven’t been open. There’s been too much snow to do some things and not enough to do others. Everything is too expensive. But, despite not loving it I think I’ve made the best of my time here. I’ve done a ton of hikes. I’ve made new friends and finally met online friends in person. I’ve made memories in new places with old friends. I’ve seen lighthouses and fire towers and watched storm-fueled waves crash against rocky shores. I learned to use a map and compass, went ice fishing, and rode a snowmobile. I experienced a total solar eclipse. I’ve spent most of my time here wishing to be home, missing my friends and my beloved southern Appalachian mountains. But between the folds of homesickness I’ve found joy in where I am. Nestled among the layers of longing I’ve discovered the elation of new experiences. Maine may not have been everything I wanted it to be, but it’s been something worth doing, and that’s enough for now. One week from today I’ll load everything I came with into my car in preparation for the journey south. One week from tomorrow I’ll work my last shift in the cute little seacoast hospital I’ve called home for the past 13 weeks. One week from Thursday I’ll begin the drive. Most people are concerned with first impressions, hoping to be viewed as nice, as pretty, as cool – at the very least, as someone worth a second look. My mom was one of the most (outwardly) confident people I knew, exuding self-assuredness and poise – to a fault. My freshman year in high school, I got permission for three new friends to come over after school. Since I took the city bus, we all piled on for the nearly 1-hour trip home, excited to be out and about on our own, and verbally annoyed with anyone who crossed whatever invisible line teenagers draw in their minds. (Thinking back, I’m certain we were the four most annoying people on that bus, and I apologize to everyone who had to listen to us.) Reaching home, we entered the front door, meeting my mom in the kitchen, who had just arrived herself from playing tennis. She greeted my (brand new) friends by introducing herself and promptly telling the story of how she forgot her towel and had to blow her nose into her sweatshirt, then showing us the sweatshirt. Mortified, I quickly led everyone to my bedroom. My friends, after deciding that my mom was not, in fact, a complete nutcase, chose to laugh at the situation. For the next 37 years. No joke - it comes up regularly in conversation even today. As my mom died in 2008, it’s a welcome memory that brings back laughter and joy - no small gift. Hike 21/52 Length: 1.5 Ascent: 498ft Yearly miles: 66.7 ——— There is a lot to see in @acadianps and I barely got to scratch the surface on my first trip a few weeks ago. I decided to go back this week to knock a few more things off my list. Namely, the rest of the park loop road, including the road to Cadillac Mountain, had opened for the season. @k_robin89 decided to meet me there, and we spent Thursday evening driving along the park loop road. Friday morning we hit Bar Harbor, then hiked the Beehive Trail (not dog friendly!) before driving up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain. I also did the Summit Path loop around Cadillac. This hike’s total mileage is a combination of the Beehive trail and Summit Path. Beehive trail was a super cool jungle gym of ladders, rails, and cliffside paths. I LOVE trails like this and had an awesome time navigating up the steep cliffs. Cadillac Mountain was overrated in my opinion. Mammoth March Training Hike: Delaware State Park was awesome! We easily completed our 8.7 miles with an average pace of 22:06 minute miles! With less than 300' of elevation, this pace was a snap! We had several brand new or newer Hikerbabes, which is always fun, and several from our core group of Training Hikers. The wildflowers were blooming and I added two new sightings to this year's list: Virginia Bluebells and Toadshade Trillium. Our next Mammoth March Training Hike will be approximately 10.3 miles in Knox Co on May 19. Powell Mountain to Dicks Creek Gap for a zero day with Hostel Around the Bend Clayton had a lot of great local museums and some good eats 😋 And Hiawassee was my first big Ingles resupply. Gordon and Lisa at Around the Bend were awesome; very helpful and their hostel was so cozy! Great lodging, and I was able to pick up some new shoes and resupply from the on-site outfitter (goodbye blisters!). Another plus: 2 super cute hostel kitties and a hostel puppy! "12 for 12" A beautiful day on the Buckeye Trail earlier this month as 12 Central and SE Ohio Hikerbabes hit the trail at Burr Oak State Park to tackle the 12 mile section from the Tom Jenkins Dam (NSV pt 13) to the Dock 3 Parking Lot (NSV pt 6). It's a gorgeous section with so many wildflowers in bloom right now! We had three ladies join us for their first ever Hikerbabes event and they just ROCKED it! Such a fun day! Thank you ladies for an amazing day in nature! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did! The summer of 1994 my college roommate, Jill, and I backpacked across Europe for three weeks. One of our early stops was in Marseille, France, and we stayed in a hostel within walking distance from the coast. I remember fresh bread, good pastries, and watching several elders play horseshoes in the park while my roommate took a nap. Hike 20/52 NH Firetower #7 Length: 4.2mi Ascent: 330ft Yearly miles: 65.2 ——— Despite being completely and utterly exhausted from working several shifts in a row, I HAD to get out and enjoy the finally beautiful and mostly warm springtime weather today. @trailchaserofficial is working on several New England hiking lists and had a few near the coast she needed to check off. We decided to piece together a big loop hike at Stratham Hill Park that included a fire tower, and then stop at Great Bay Discovery Center to do the boardwalk trail. Mileage totals listed above are the two trails combined. Soaking in the sunshine and marveling over budding trees and spring flowers felt wonderful. It finally feels like the dreary winter is loosening its grip on the seacoast region. I’ll be leaving Maine in three weeks, and admittedly feel like I’ve missed out on so much due to the season and bad weather. I’m making the most of the time I have left, however. I have several hikes planned for the remainder of my time here. Oh! And first 🐍 sightings of the season! The hike was fine, it’s an out and back trail that’s very easy. But the only way to see a view is to climb the tower. With Nola, that was just not possible in my opinion. And then I felt bad for anyone with mobility issues. Much like other state high point LJ’s, you can drive up to the top and park, but then no view? I mean, come on, kind of a let down. Due to the rain, we've had the last two winters, many of our trails are so overgrown that they're impassible. Hiking is the answer…who cares what the question is. Hike 18 Shaffer Rock, Chimney Rocks, Appalachian Trail, and Hermitage Trail Loop 4 miles Well…Nola and I survived our first overnight camping trip! I chose this trail and AT shelter as it is on the way to Kentucky. Parking was convenient and I was not far from a hotel if we needed to bail. It was cold 🥶. Fine for one night, but if I do any other overnights in temps below 40, I’ll need a better sleeping bag. Everything else was perfect. I took other pics, but am sharing just the one this time. The Tumbling Run shelter along the AT is very nice. And while it is primitive camping, it’s almost a glamping experience. I’m so proud of Nola for doing so well on the hike, the road trip, and the camping. She was a little confused about staying in a tent, but was fine when she realized it was snuggle time. Yesterday, we had a Fun day at Burr Oak State Park learning about trail maintenance on the Buckeye Trail with @bta.centralohio and @buckeyetrailassociation Little Cities of the Forest Chapters for a Women's Work day. We worked on a 2.7 mile section to cut back multi-flora rose and Autumn Olive. We removed dead branches and cut back fallen tree limbs. We learned how to blaze and repainted blazes. And we cut drainage lines in the trail to direct water away from the tread. It was a great way to kickoff Earth Day celebrations by helping care for the trail we love so much! We were treated with an extravaganza of wildflowers! If you haven't been to Burr Oak, now is the time to explore its beauty! Big thanks to the ladies who joined us! Can’t you just hike faster? Well, yes and no. I don’t talk about my chronic illness much on this platform, but asthma is the primary reason I can’t hike faster. Yes, my legs can move faster. Yes, my cardiovascular fitness is high enough that my heart can handle the increased exertion. Yes, my lungs can move enough oxygen to fuel my brain and body at a faster pace. Yes, my muscles are strong enough to push me up mountains faster. But no, I can’t actually hike faster, at least not sustainably. Why? Because I have a chronic inflammatory airway disease: asthma. And my asthma is exercise-induced. What that means is that the higher my heart rate gets, and the longer it stays high, the smaller my airway becomes. Through improving my cardiovascular fitness, primarily by hiking, I’ve been able to come off of every single daily medication I used to take for my asthma (I took four meds daily at one point). My asthma is considered well controlled, and I only use a rescue inhaler as needed. On Tuesday I hiked with a group of other wilderness navigation students and instructors to the top of Cathedral Ledge. I knew when the instructor said “it’s about a 25 minute hike to the top” that we’d be holding a much faster pace than I’m used to. The distance was about 1.25 miles. Normally it would take me 35-40 minutes to hike a mile and a quarter uphill. I put my head down, did my breathing exercises, and told myself I could do anything for 25 minutes. And I did. I made it to the top without stopping, mostly stayed caught up to the rest of the group (of much stronger hikers), and I’ve paid dearly for it for the past five days. That one 25 min push left me coughing for the remainder of the day, wheezing for the next three days, and with chest tightness and decreased lung capacity still today. What I learned in that 25 minutes is that just because I can doesn’t mean I should. It’s taken me a lot of years to come to terms with my slow pace. I’m still extremely self-conscious about it. It still frustrates me to no end to do this day after day and week after week and never get better or faster. But this is my pace. I’ll get there when I get there.

I feel a re-introduction may be in order on account of 2,000+ followers! I mostly want to say a massive thank you to everyone who is here in this space ✨Thank you for supporting me, thank you for being curious enough to pop your head in and follow, thank you for those who have traveled with us time and time again, and thank you for having a love for the outdoors and adventure. I am here for YOU and to help you find your way as a woman+ in the outdoor world, and to connect with others in this place! I started @thegirlstripadventureco in 2021 as a way to travel with other women, but also to follow a passion and to start doing something meaningful and fulfilling with my life instead of pouring hours into something that gave me nothing in return except a paycheck. Since then, I have created an adventurous life and have connected with SO MANY incredible human beings. I have traveled and adventured with hundreds of women from all over. The best part (to me) is that several of those people have created friendships amongst themselves and continue to spread the stoke in their own lives when they come home from a trip. I’ve seen women break out of their shells, begin healing journeys, glow with new-found confidence, do things they never thought they’d be able to do, say yes to hard scary things, and be vulnerable with strangers who turn into friends. We have seen insane views from coast to coast, pushed our bodies harder than we knew we could, and communed with nature in ways our souls were craving. I’m growing and building this business on my own, but above that, I want to help grow and build YOU through outdoor recreation and travel, two things that grew and built me into the strong woman I am now.
