You find unexpected gems like water holes in the middle of nowhere and tiny towns with funny names like "Lonesome Palm Tree" town. Random people are kind to you and there is always somewhere to stop for coffee as you drive into the night, lose cell service and Google maps - a good excuse to get lost again (not that you need excuses).

Someone must have gone to Burford's Barber Shop.... I feel I should put some kind of warning about "adult content", since him's nakey. That moment when you go "Huh, I wouldn't have thought that giving him a good fluff up would make that much of a difference in length", and then realize you are using a 10 blade instead of the 4F blade you wanted.... 😳🤦♀️ I guess just be glad it was a 10, and not a 30? Anyway, his clip has gone from a "tight German" to a "ridiculously tight German". No more 🐩 floofs. What with all our wet weather, and the final throes of coat change, he was starting to get some mats. Best to clip everything off and start over again. And I found a sore on his tail that I didn't know about until I clipped his floof off, so now that can be treated. Repeat after me: He's a Poodle. It's just hair. It grows back. Simon and I had a nice walk downtown yesterday. We (by that, I mean "I") did not find the geocache we were looking for at the giant fire hydrant, located in front of the @firemuseumtx and then we visited the portable murals on the grounds of the @amsetx where he sprouted a set of cactus "antlers". We practiced our reactivity management techniques, learned in @fenzidogsportsacademy classes, and did some of them for real when we had people show up unexpectedly. Leo turned eleven yesterday. Not bad for a skinny, mangy, exhausted puppy that wasn't expect to make it through the weekend after being scooped up from a laundromat parking lot. Simon says that the "new tour and pixie" thing isn't as much fun as it sounded. Not only is his entire undercarriage shaved, he has to kept strictly on leash when outside on potty breaks for the next two weeks, which is 🐮💩. The first time I went to the taco vendor, our hands touched over a bowl of green salsa and I let go of the 5-peso-coin a moment too early or they grabbed it a moment too late. It fell into the salsa. I apologized profoundly. Not what I had been going for. The third time I went, they asked if Game was allowed to have bones. I said yes. Would they like me to pack one, or did I want to give it to her right away? (I have a joke I make when I buy street food, and it's that the clean up crew has arrived - then I generally allow Game to look for scraps of meat as long as she doesn't get in anyone's way.) I said yes, she could have bones, and if they wanted to, they could hand it to her. I don't generally have strangers feed my dog, but I was touched. It was a nice gesture. The fourth time I went, they were out of tacos, but did have a big bone for Game anyways. We just went again, and this time, the taco vendor handed Game her bone before she was even done cleaning up, or my tacos were ready to go. We laughed as we watched her nonchalantly take it (of course I am getting a bone here) and then trot off without a look back to find a comfy spot to enjoy it. And then we shared another laugh when another dog came up to her (because she had a bone), and she decided to come back and lie at my feet after all because it's better to not be comfy and keep your bone than to be comfy and have to defend it. Somehow, organically, we have developed an understanding that Game gets to have a bone when I buy tacos, and the vendor gets to give it to her. It will be a free, big, and yummy bone, and we will both take pleasure in the interaction and exchange smiles over it. Stuff like that? Makes my day. People can be wonderful.

Piper and Hilde tried their first @ukchuntingops SHED trial this weekend! I've been training it on my own with Piper for a few years now, but I've never been to a trial or any seminars so it was fairly new for me to see how these trials work! Initially, I planned on just running Piper, because 3 months ago Hilde didn't even have a hold. Then things clicked for her and a formal retrieve came together. She was having a lot of fun practising so I decided to enter her too and see how it went. Both girls passed both runs, and Hilde even beat Piper for time both days. Today Hilde found her 4 antlers in just 6 minutes and 11 seconds. Not bad for her first Shed trial! The first of many I'm sure. Both girls had a blast, despite working through some cold and wet conditions today. This picture of Hilde isn't from from today, but from a recent training session while getting ready to trial.
