Hike 21/52 Length: 1.5 Ascent: 498ft Yearly miles: 66.7 ——— There is a lot to see in @acadianps and I barely got to scratch the surface on my first trip a few weeks ago. I decided to go back this week to knock a few more things off my list. Namely, the rest of the park loop road, including the road to Cadillac Mountain, had opened for the season. @k_robin89 decided to meet me there, and we spent Thursday evening driving along the park loop road. Friday morning we hit Bar Harbor, then hiked the Beehive Trail (not dog friendly!) before driving up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain. I also did the Summit Path loop around Cadillac. This hike’s total mileage is a combination of the Beehive trail and Summit Path. Beehive trail was a super cool jungle gym of ladders, rails, and cliffside paths. I LOVE trails like this and had an awesome time navigating up the steep cliffs. Cadillac Mountain was overrated in my opinion. IMAGINE. And imagine if you didn’t have to imagine. // A year later. All work is my own. I made these as a provocation to push the outdoor industry last year. I never thought this late night work would become my shared post ever. These covers were made during a night when the world felt in disarray, and I couldn’t sleep. Coming from creative consulting and design, we constantly have to re-think for people and present what they need to see. In truth, I had been producing and photographing beautiful projects for brands that sat on hard drives until George Floyd. It’s hard to make it if your work isn’t deemed as valuable. So many will push a narrative that we are not outside. Yet, the truth is simple: our stories were just not as desired to be told, our perspectives not desired to be heard. And this past year, I have loved seeing new people finally begin to get a long overdue chance. But will it be short-lived? Now the work really begins if hearts are genuine and minds are open. And if you think it is only about a brown or black face for an advertisement or quickly pasted on a website, you are missing it. That’s a start. It’s who is telling the story, it’s leadership and cultivating new leaders, it’s who sits on boards, it’s designing for a diverse audience, rethinking ambassadors, etc. It’s EVERYTHING that needs reimagining. The Kern River Trout Fest is finally here. Join us tomorrow in Kernville at Riverside Park from 10am-2pm for a free and family friendly event celebrating the trout of the Kern River. Writer Rick Steves once wrote, “Culture shock is a constructive thing. It’s the growing pains of a broadening perspective.” I’m a big fan of this reframing—because it’s a reminder that travel, the way I envision it, is human work. No amount of souvenirs and cultural experiences can enrich our lives without the crucial ingredient of empathy. When we serve as our own personal historians, we also accept the responsibility involved in that act of remembering. It makes all the difference to see uncomfortable experiences, or opposing views on life, as moments to learn from rather than shun. Once, I was asked in an interview to talk about one of the most interesting interactions I’ve had with a ‘foreigner’. The framing struck me, because the interviewer unironically referred to the citizens of those countries as foreigners—when it was evident I was the guest, and not always an invited one. That singular question encapsulated everything I’d like to change about normative views of the world: the idea that foreign-ness is reserved for other people. I’ve been ‘othered’ for a solid chunk of my life, so it’s an all-too-familiar feeling while I’m on the road. Conceptually, culture shock isn’t so much the notion that immersion in a different country is what profoundly takes you out of your orbit. It’s experiencing othering while you’re there—the cradle of your worldview being rocked and challenged. How we react and grow from that is entirely up to us. But it’s certainly an invitation to embrace that inner journey, and emerge as better people.
Happy Friday! Here's some of what I've been reading this week. Thanks to the tagged publishers for my review copies! Sidelined - oh my gosh, as a woman who loves sports this was a must read. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me so angry, and it was helpful to know there are others in this camp of loving something that doesn't often love or even care about you back. Daniel, Deconstructed - the plot of this contemporary YA was very cute and Daniel was a great MC but I found the writing wasn't quite holding up to the ideas and characters in the story. Still an adorable read with plenty of great queer rep that I would put in the hands of teens. Anzu and the Realm of Darkness - this graphic novel is my current read and I'm enjoying the mythology and adventure although I've been confused a few times with the jumping of time within the panels. Force of Nature - this was a sweet (and heartbreaking) novel in verse about the life of scientist Rachel Carson. The writing was beautiful and the illustrations were gorgeous and while I really enjoyed it I don't think it will be for a wide range of readers. So many times in our life fear is totally self generated. There are moments of utter panic, which is when you are moving towards the next level in your life. Just take a big step and do the work. The negative thoughts are a force of nature they are not your thoughts. Once you’ve made your decision to move forward, you need to move forward. Resistance is in the form of thoughts they are often negative form of thought. Remember in all this that life is a journey and don’t let that journey and negativity. Cleaning my home with my children has always been my number one priority. I tried many things over the years. The first was to walk through the cleaning aisle at the store to find the products we needed. But due to overwhelm (the number of options, not knowing which products were actually safe, and calculating the expense of it all), I always walked out of there with nothing. This also meant that for years, the actual cleaning in our home was minimal because I was so worried about picking the wrong thing. But when I started teaching my kids how to do it, they were so inspired by the process that they created their own cleaning supplies by mixing soaps, shampoo, conditioner, and lotions, and it made a pretty big mess.
