Made with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, with an extra dose of bitters and a touch of the spice-forward French liqueur Bénédictine. It was very strong, and cost around $30 each 😅 It's a New Orleans cocktail developed in the 1930's. Rev Zombie’s Voodoo Shop and Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo are two kitschy shops in the French Quarter that draw a lot of tourists. Aside from the touristy aspect did you know that voodoo was brought to New Orleans by enslaved West Africans in the 1700s? Marie Laveau is the most well known voodoo priestess. A beautiful central arched door with side pilasters and sidelights on a Federal style home, built in 1831 for Felix de Armas. This home is located on N. Rampart in the French Quarter. The black and white photo dates to around 1900, and the drawing was done in 1927 by famed New Orleans Architecture Samuel Wilson Jr. when he was an architecture student at Tulane. Sadly the door was removed some time around 1930-1950 for a storefront and today the façade has simple French doors (s.3)! The studio is in the works. Unpacking is a big job, especially when moving into a smaller space. I want everyone to have their space and room to be themselves and I want to do this with a more measured approach. When we get back into the studio full swing I would like to have a solid plan for success. Opportunities abound here and we have time. We’re making some larger life changes in order to make this the success it deserves to be. I don’t mean to be too vague, it’s nothing terribly serious, just a different approach. For instance, Friday we’re ordering a bicycle for me to haul my wares and commute as well as simply be able to leave the house more easily. I have been enjoying the space and room also, especially not sharing a kitchen. I’ve been able to cook more and cook more regularly. I hung the menu board which makes me happy. I’ll have add Sunday when I do the menu next week. This menu fell out of use when my access to kitchen became very limited. I’m very happy to have it back on the wall. It was great to hear Kenzie ask me what day it is (it was early during the walk to school) and have her say “Tuesday? Yay! Gumbo!”. Boy that fills my heart! We’re very happy here and getting settled and taking our time doing so! Celebrating Louisiana Statehood The Kingdom of France had been controlling the Louisiana territory from 1682 until it was given up to Spain in 1762. In 1800 Napoleon wanted to re-establish a French colonial empire and got it back in exchange for Tuscany. With a war with England lurking he decided to sell it off to the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. At the time of the purchase the Louisiana territory was enormous. It reached into Canada in the north, engulfing most of Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming and Minnesota, all of South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas as well as parts of Colorado, New Mexico and Texas along with Louisiana itself. The border to the north, southwest and the area east of the Mississippi were however disputed with Spain until 1812. After that, Louisiana was admitted to the Union as the 18th state on April 30, 1812, with basically the same borders as the present state. THE VIEUX CARRÉ Just like the Hurricane, the Sazerac and the Grasshopper, the Vieux Carré was created in the “Big Easy”, New Orleans. The name of the drink is French for old square or old quarter, being the original name of the New Orleans’ French Quarter. When ordering the drink the Creole way of saying it is Voo car-ray. The cocktail was invented in the mid to late 1930s by Walter Bergeron, head bartender at the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone. The Hotel Monteleone opened in 1886 when a Sicilian nobleman, Antonio Monteleone, bought the hotel in the early 1880s. Still after five generations, the hotel still remains in the family. I finally had a chance watch the documentary “It’s Quieter in the Twilight” about the team still leading the Voyager Mission. The original team of 1,200 people is now whittled down to a dozen people, most of which have been there since the beginning. The whole thing was fascinating. Voyager 1 and its twin, Voyager 2, are still both actively in contact with the Jet Propulsion Lab despite having entered interstellar space running on only 4 watts per year which is less than half what the phone you’re reading this on uses in a single day. The Voyagers had their power grids adjusted, various instruments and instrument heaters turned off and the last of their energy used to point the antennas back to earth to assure they keep talking to us until they run out of power. It’s estimated that’ll be sometime next year but, if we keep turning off more instrumentation or heaters and no alien life abducts them or meteorites hit them, into 2036. So you’re probably wondering where they’re going and when their journey will be over: Voyager 1 is headed towards a star within Ursa Minor (the Little Dipper) and Voyager 2 to the constellation of Sagittarius within Andromeda. In about 40,000 years they’ll reach their destination and, if we’re lucky, they’ll be found and maybe someone will interpret those golden records and respond. A working theory I read is that by then humans will have mastered space travel and will go retrieve the Voyagers to stick them in a museum and that sounds pretty good, too. Still no news on the moon lander Odie but the Artemis Mission is ramping up for launches so stay tuned 🚀 In the meantime, go outside and look up!

Saturday, May 11th we’re doing Traditional Kölsch Service for the release of Weird…It Doesn’t Smell Like Cologne!!! 🍻Order a coaster, also known as a deckel, start a tab and have a seat. You’ll start off with a single stange (.25L / 8.5oz) of kölsch. When you finish your glass, someone walking around with a stange wheel will replace your glass with a fresh one and mark a tally on your coaster. When you are done simply place your deckel on top of your glass to signal you no longer want refills. When you’re ready to close out bring your coaster to the bartender so they can add up your tally marks.
