🎉HAPPY NATIONAL PRESERVATION MONTH!🎉 The Oaklawn Plantation is a historic plantation house in Natchitoches, Louisiana. It is located on the Louisiana Highway 494 east of Natchitoches in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since March 28, 1979. The mansion was built in 1830 for Narcisse Prudhomme, who held as many as 104 enslaved people on the property. After his death in 1859, the plantation was inherited by his son, Achille Prudhomme. Although the plantation survived the Civil War of 1861-1865 intact, after Achille's death, the land was divided into parcels by his heirs and sold off. In 1916, Charles Edgar Cloutier, the husband of Adeline Prudhomme, a great-grandniece of Narcisse Prudhomme, purchased the property. It is now owned by filmwriter Robert Harling, author of the play, later a film, Steel Magnolias (dir. Herbert Ross, 1989). The house has three stories, fourteen chimneys and a large gallery. It is an example of French creole architecture. #nationalpreparednessmonth #nationalpreservationmonth2024 #creole #creolearchitecture #creoleheritagecenter

The dining room at LeJeune House (a Creole plantation in New Roads, Louisiana) occupies the original dining room of the house. While the exposed cypress beams are Creole vestiges, a Greek Revival mantel dates from the remodeling that occurred several decades after the house was built. Purchased in New England, the mahogany table and gondola chairs are similar to American furnishings imported through New Orleans in the nineteenth century. Meyer lemons grown in the garden and arranged on a Vieux Paris platter make a simple centerpiece. The kitchen at LeJeune House (an early 1800s Creole plantation in New Roads, Louisiana) is located in one of the original ground-floor room with partially exposed brick-between-post walls and hand-hewn cypress beams. An 1854 hand-colored etching depicting Benjamin Franklin in the French court hangs above a primitive Southern jelly cupboard. 🎉HAPPY NATIONAL PRESERVATION MONTH!🎉 The Jones House helps establish the significance of Natchitoches Parish as a center of the Creole style. It is particularly important for its three elegant mantel/overmantel ensembles, a feature found in only the most elegant and "upmarket" Creole houses in Louisiana. In this, it is in sharp contrast to the general trend in Natchitoches Parish of large, plain Creole houses with little in the way of intricate ornamentation. It is one of only two houses having mantel/overmantel ensembles. (The other is Melrose Plantation House, a National Historic Landmark.) Finally, it is the only known surviving house to have the lozenge shaped design so popular in Louisiana's French Creole architecture. #nationalpreservationmonth #nationalpreservationmonth2024 #creole #creolearchitecture #creoleheritagecenter

The master bedroom at LeJeune House (an early 1800s Creole plantation in New Roads, Louisiana) was redesigned during the Greek Revival remodeling. While it features the same Doric pilasters as the more formal adjoining parlors, its walls and ceiling are simple painted planks. Bedhangings feature a reproduction toile from Scalamandre with scenes of ships and fishing boats that call to mind the house's setting on the False River, which once flowed into the nearby Mississippi River. For more, see my book Houses with Charm (Rizzoli: 2012) #scalamandre #southerngardenhistorysociety #newroadslouisiana #creolearchitecture #louisianaplantations #lejeunehouse #architecturalphotography #interiorsphotography #creoleplantations #susansully #rizzoli

Scalamandre silk velvet covers a simple 19th-century American sofa in the parlor of LeJeune House in New Roads, Louisiana, an early 1800s Creole plantation that was remodeled in the Greek Revival style. An interesting element is the transom above the interior doorway that features a running-bond motif. Both of the adjacent parlors open to the deep porch that runs across the front of the house. #scalamandre #newroadslouisiana #creolearchitecture #louisianaplantations #lejeunehouse #architecturalphotography #interiorsphotography #rizzoli #susansully

During the Greek Revival remodeling of LeJeune House in New Roads, Louisiana, the interior was embellished with handsome yet delicately scaled classical details including Doric pilasters, blind friezes, and coffered ceilings. Richard Gibbs and Randy Harelson decorated the rooms with the kind of American-made furnishings that were readily available in New Orleans in the 19th century. Most of the furniture is small in scale, as it would have been in past times when such rooms served multiple purposes, as gathering space during the day and sleeping quarters at night. LeJeune house, constructed near the famed Parlange plantation in the early 1800s in New Roads, Louisiana, is one of the most poetic houses I've photographed. I discovered it while researching Houses with Charm (Rizzoli: 2012). Originally, it was surrounded by a Creole-style wraparound porch with square brick columns below slender colonnettes. After the house was remodeled in the Greek Revival style, the traditional French colonial hipped roof was replaced with gables, the second-story colonnettes were encased with tapered pillars, and side and rear porches were enclosed to create new rooms. The house was restored by architect Richard Gibbs, who was town architect of Seaside, Florida, in the 1990s and Randy Harrelson (1957-2024), a writer and horticulturalist who collaborated with the Southern Garden History Society, Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation, and Rosedown Plantation Gardens. They furnished it and lived in it in a way that complemented and enhanced its architectural setting and history. Spending a couple of nights there, savoring its quiet beauty and enjoying the company of Richard and Randy was one of the finest experiences my work has brought me. Stay tuned for photos of the interior. #southerngardenhistorysociety #newroadslouisiana #creolearchitecture #louisianaplantations #lejeunehouse #architecturalphotography #southernplantations #susansully

The Creole Cottage was a major urban house type in New Orleans during the first half of the nineteenth century. Unquestionably of French origin, these cottages, while small in size, make use of typical eighteenth-century French planning rules, the most important of which is the omission of any sort of interior hallway. The early examples of this house type were often placed close to the ground, with only a minimal foundation. The street facades usually contained four openings: either two full-length entrances fitted with French doors, the upper sections of which were glazed, and two windows, all of which were held hinged to open into the house; or four doors with no windows. On some of the early cottages, the openings were round arches, with fanlights of glass fitted into each arch. The facades were flush with the front property line, with no front setback or yard, conserving the private space to the rear of the house for a yard. These early designs were most often of briquette-entre-poteaux (brick between post) construction, which was covered over with plaster to protect the poor-quality brick made in the city at that time. The typical Creole Cottage roof was covered by wood shingles, boards, or strips of bark and was steeply pitched, providing sufficient rain runoff as well as insulation from the pervasive heat. #nouvelleorléans #architecture #travelphotography #travelholic #traveldiaries #travelogue #traveltales #travelblog #travelblogger #travelgram #instatravel #lgbttravel #traveltheworld #creoleneworleans #creolecottage #louisianamarieantoinette #architecturephotography #creolecottagenola #creolecottages #créolearchitecture #creolearchitecture #frenchcolonialArchitecture #frenchcolonialarchitechture #earlyfrenchcolonialArchitecture #earlyLouisianaarchitecture #Louisianacreolearchitecture #creolebuilding #creolehouse #creolesofcolor #freepeopleofcolor

. . . . . . . . #réunion #ostrov #ostrovreunion #reunionisland #iledelareunion #gotoreunionisland #maisonfolio #hellbourg #cirquedesalazie #salazie #cestujemeposvete #objevsvet #cestujemeafotime #zenynacestach #smecestovatelky #cestolidi #cestovatelka #tropickazahrada #creolearchitecture #kreolsky #sbatohemnazadech #sonyalphaclub #kudyznudy #svetemkrizemkrazem #visitreunion #reuniontourisme

Madame X Mansion. This circa 1825 three story Creole townhouse was the French Quarter home where the infamous Madame X grew up. She was the subject of a controversial portrait painted by John Singer Sargent in 1884 that showed her in a strapless black dress and roiled the Paris Salon where it was received. (as well as a 1966 film where she was played by Lana Turner). Her father, the Civil War veteran Philippe Avegno, owned the home in her youth from 1822 to 1861. Built in 1825 this 3 story stuccoed masonry Creole porte-cochere townhouse with nice detailing, including pilasters at the ends of the front façade of the building and between the openings on the upper floors; refined dormers; and an unusual second floor balcony wrought iron railing. #nouvelleorléans #architecture #travelphotography #travelholic #traveldiaries #travelogue #traveltales #travelblog #travelblogger #travelgram #instatravel #lgbttravel #traveltheworld #creoleneworleans #creolecottage #louisianamarieantoinette #architecturephotography #creolecottagenola #creolecottages #créolearchitecture #creolearchitecture #frenchcolonialArchitecture #frenchcolonialarchitechture #earlyfrenchcolonialArchitecture #earlyLouisianaarchitecture #Louisianacreolearchitecture #creolebuilding #creolehouse #madamexportrait #madamex

The Forstall House 1858. This building’s sophisticated neoclassical-influenced facade is a remodeling by James Gallier Jr. of a preexisting three-story brick building that banker Edmund J. Forstall and his wife, Clara, purchased in 1857. The first story is rusticated with round-arched windows, the two floors above are united by two-story high Corinthian pilasters, with round-arched windows at the third level, and the building is topped by a low attic above a heavy cornice. The keystones of the third-floor windows are shaped as grotesques. Small iron balconies in front of the windows add a local touch, and the entire facade is painted in shades of a creamy color. This is an unusual design for New Orleans and reflects Gallier’s broad knowledge of fashionable European and American East Coast styles. In the twentieth century the building had various owners and uses but was returned to residential use in 2010 when it was renovated and converted to condominiums. #nouvelleorléans #architecture #travelphotography #travelholic #traveldiaries #travelogue #traveltales #travelblog #travelblogger #travelgram #instatravel #lgbttravel #traveltheworld #creoleneworleans #creolecottage #louisianamarieantoinette #architecturephotography #creolecottagenola #creolecottages #créolearchitecture #creolearchitecture #frenchcolonialArchitecture #frenchcolonialarchitechture #earlyfrenchcolonialArchitecture #earlyLouisianaarchitecture #Louisianacreolearchitecture #creolebuilding #creolehouse #creolesofcolor #freepeopleofcolor

Creole New Orleans right now honey 🤷🏽‍♀️! Going on a road trip adventure honey! Le château de Hopkins in Historic DeFuniak Springs, Florida honey. DeFuniak Springs was established as a final-destination resort. The developers enlisted the cooperation and aid of the Chautauqua Movement. The Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood, an auditorium seating 4,000, was constructed on Lake DeFuniak in the center of town. Seminars, classes, and the like were held in the Hall of Brotherhood building for people on vacation. The auditorium of the building was severely damaged by Hurricane Eloise in 1975 and razed. In 2003, the Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood Foundation, Inc., a charitable foundation, started a capital campaign to restore the historic building. The westerly portion of the building facing Circle Drive was still in use at that time. #DeFuniakSprings #Florida #defuniakspringsfl #defuniakspringshistoricdistrict #defuniakspringsflorida #defuniakspringsliving #defuniakspringsphotographer #defuniakspringsrealestate #defuniakspringsphotography #defuniakspringsnewbornphotographer #floridaliving #floridaphotographer #floridabeaches #floridatravel #floridablogger #floridaphotography #floridaarchitecture #floridaarchitects #springbreak #springtime #creolearchitecture #créolearchitecture #creolearchitecturalheritage

Je vous parlerai de déco avec petit budget Je parlerai d'objet pratique Je parlerai de tout ce qu'engendre d'être propriétaire avec ses avantages et ses mésaventures.

What I see on my way to go junk shopping 🛒 🛍️ in Creole New Orleans honey 🤷🏽‍♀️! The area now known as Bywater was mostly plantation land in the colonial era, with significant residential development beginning the first decade of the 19th century as part of what was known as “Faubourg Washington,” part of the predominantly Francophone “downtown” section of New Orleans. Many people from France, Spain, and the French Caribbean settled here. During the century, it grew with both white Creoles of French and Spanish descent, as well as mixed-race Creoles of French, Spanish, African, and Native American descent. They were also joined by immigrants from Germany, Italy, and Ireland. Bywater is home to the site at which Homer Plessy was removed from an East Louisiana Railroad car for violating the separate car act, an event that resulted in the Plessy v. Ferguson case and the legal doctrine of “separate but equal.” Today, a historical marker stands at the intersection of Press Street and Royal Street to commemorate the event. #nouvelleorléans #architecture #travelphotography #travelholic #traveldiaries #travelogue #traveltales #travelblog #travelblogger #travelgram #instatravel #lgbttravel #traveltheworld #creoleneworleans #creolecottage #louisianamarieantoinette #architecturephotography #creolecottagenola #creolecottages #créolearchitecture #creolearchitecture #frenchcolonialArchitecture #frenchcolonialarchitechture #earlyfrenchcolonialArchitecture #earlyLouisianaarchitecture #Louisianacreolearchitecture #creolebuilding #creolehouse #creolesofcolor #freepeopleofcolor

The Old Ursuline Convent, circa 1753. The Old Ursuline Convent is the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley. Constructed by French Colonial Engineers under the auspices of the crown, the convent was designed in 1745 and completed in 1752-1753. Over the centuries, this building has been a convent for the Ursuline nuns, a school, an archbishop's residence, the archdiocesan central office, a meeting place for the Louisiana Legislature. Later, it served as a residence for priests serving mainly the Italian community and then housed the Archdiocesan Archives. Today, together with the St. Louis Cathedral and St. Mary's Church, it forms the Catholic Cultural Heritage Center of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. @oldursulineconvent
