Day 22 of 40: This was Prabha Atre’s first album. I have many personal memories regarding this one. This was my introduction to Indian classical music. She sings Maru Bihag, Kalavati & a thumri in Khamaj. Leave alone the technicalities, it’s the timbre of her voice that makes you feel you are floating mid air. It’s so smooth. It has so much emotion. There is no way that you can runaway from it. It engulfs you & leaves you totally intoxicated. Even after years of repeated listening, it still has the same effect on me. I remember the room in which I grew up. The Walkman on which I heard this album at least ten times a day. The uncertainty of my teenage self. Her voice that I held onto. My friends. My girlfriends. So many people. So many memories. Day 15 of 40: Known for his immaculate style in ghazals, the legend sings a number of thumri’s on this one. I am assuming that these must have been a bunch that were collected overtime. Here is Mehdi Hassan singing light classical. The voice resembles the timbre of his earlier years & you can clearly see why his ghazal recitals sometimes feel like lessons in individual raga’s. His strong classical background is reflective in these renditions. One of my favourites and also very rare.
