Heartbreaker is the sixth and final studio album by the English rock band Free, that provided them with one of their most successful singles, “Wishing Well”. It was recorded in late 1972 after bassist Andy Fraser had left the band and while guitarist Paul Kossoff was ailing from an addiction to Mandrax (Quaalude) and features a different line up from previous albums. Tetsu Yamauchi was brought in to replace Fraser, while John “Rabbit” Bundrick became the band’s keyboard player to compensate for the increasingly unreliable Kossoff (singer Paul Rodgers played keyboards on the previous album 1972 Free at Last). Both Yamauchi and Bundrick had played with Kossoff and drummer Simon Kirke on the album Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu & Rabbit during that period in late 1971 when Free had broken up for the first time. Also, several other musicians were used on the album. One of jazz history’s greats, organ player Lonnie O. Smith, must be the epitome of cool. Going under the title Dr. he is one of the finest Hammond players in the circuit. Played with all the big jazz artists of his time, among them greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Lou Donaldson and Frank Foster. But he also joined forces with giants of soul like Etta James, Dionne Warwick, The Impressions and my personal favorite Gladys Knight. The different influences dr. Smith picked up while working with artists in these genres can be clearly heard on this album. The album is accurately called ‘Drives’. All the soulful songs have a funky groove to them. The flow drives perfectly for while you’re driving. The musicians Lonnie Smith gathered around him for these recordings are of extreme high quality. The guitar solos of Larry McGee are just sublime. This makes the album as a whole just an enormous cool experience, it truly drives.
