A very new book about a very old culture. I read this whole thing last night and learned so much. Reem Kassis takes young readers on a cultural journey through Palestine, covering geography, religion, food, the arts, and more. Perfect for those in the diaspora to learn more about their homeland but equally accessible to foreigners. I appreciate Kassis’s gentle and celebratory age-appropriate writing. The tatreez-inspired borders are also a nice touch. We must keep our children from becoming desensitized to news of suffering far away. Should I scrape the pulverised flesh from the concrete, from the top-soil and stuff it, like meat-gone-off, into neat and heavy packages for your convenience so that you might weigh it and tell me if it's enough? How many more dismembered parts will satisfy your need? Arms that nursed elders, legs that won races Should I collect them all and number them in an orderly fashion to facilitate your tallying? How many screams from lungs that would prefer, if life were different, to sing lullabies to children and love songs to the moon? How much weeping from the mothers? How much wailing from the father's?
