Can't believe we missed our campers birthday 🎂 Howy is now 40 years old. Since ownership, we've had wipers flew off in a heavy down pour, left us stranded on the M25 in rush hour, exhaust fumes into the cab, tyre blow out in Wales on windy roads, Temperamental starting problems, Ran it out of fuel, snapped accelerator cable, carbs problems, resulting in a 8 hour recovery ride home. Steve's awesome early bay came to see me for a new starter motor. Once the old starter motor was out it was obvious that it was going to need a little more TLC. The fuel hoses were cracked and porous (see picture). Problem : I don't know why people still use low grade R9 and expect it to last with too much bend and ethanol fuels 🤷♂️, the previous 'VW garage' should have known better. Solution : New ethanol resistant codan 5.6mm fuel hose from tank to carbs 🤙 P : Mismatched and completely incorrect jetting on the Weber ICTs. S : Re-jetted as per @way_outwestie spec P : No fuel pressure regulator meaning the pressure was 4psi with a stock pump and the needle valves were worn & leaking fuel in to the oil. S : Added a malpassi petrol king pressure regulator and set to 2.1psi. P : Oil contaminated with Fuel. S : Drained and replenished with Morris 20w50. P : Valves all tight from contamination issue. S : Reset, lubricated and new gaskets. P : No balance pipe between carb manifolds S :Manifolds removed and tapped with 6mm barbs, ethanol resistant 6mm balance pipe added. P : Brake booster barb loose and leaking in air. S : Retapped and repaired. P : Distributor cap and rotor arm mismatched and damaged. S: Replaced with matching set of Bosch parts. P : Spark plug loose and ignition lead damaged S : Inspected, cleaned, re-gapped tightened and replaced. Weber 34 ICT dual carb rebuild. Managed to get two weber 34 ict carbs cheap on ebay. Very dirty and well used. Ultrasonic cleaner to degrease and a soda blast. Cleaned again. All rebuilt with correct new jets etc and full rebuild kit. Came up nice. Sometimes there are buses that you just want to keep all for yourself...this is definitely one of them. Mick has already out his own stamp on the interior which I love and just needed a bit of help with some mechanical gremlins. The previous VW garage left the poor Type4 running like a dog and missed some real basic issues 🤦♂️ *Valves all way too loose, now adjusted correctly to .15mm *Timing reset from 38 degrees to 30 degrees *Weber ICTs unbalanced and mis-jetted. I found 45 idles on one side and 57 on the other!!! Now re-jetted to the Wayoutwestie 2 litre spec, deep cleaned, float heights set and needle valves replaced. *A fuel pressure regulator Installed to keep the ICTs happy at 2.1psi. I like a good before and after shot....so here is an after and before 🤪 Robs lovely early bay used to run a Subaru engine but was fraught with problems so instead a lovely Type1 power plant from @thevwenginecompany was installed. Today to make the most out of the 1600 I did a full Twin Weber ICT conversion on his driveway. Genuine Weber 34ICT's, stripped, cleaned, rejetted, float heights set. Malpassi Petrol King regulator installed and set to 2.1psi, @cb_performance manifolds and @csp_crew bellcrank linkage and new 5.6mm ethanol resistant engine bay fuel lines to replace the wrong 6mm lines and clips that had been fitted. As with all my builds, Lucas ethanol treatment provided to protect the carbs needle valves and all rubber in the fuel system🤙 Makes it look tidy! This one. It's been a challenge on and off for the last few weeks. It came in for an engine service and for the Weber ICTs to be rebuilt and rejetted... It left with all new 100% ethanol resistant fuel lines, a fuel pressure regulator, a new starter motor, 12v regulator, multiple dash bulbs, indicator stalk repair and a Pertronix SVDA. The Weber ICTs were the culprit as I suspected with worn out needle valves , twice the fuel pressure they should be set to and empi manifolds creating their usual issues. *New jetting for the 1641 *Float heights reset *Floats tested *Internals cleaned and blown through *A reduction in fuel pressure from 4.2psi to 2.1psi *New @cb_performance manifolds and balance pipe. *Filter tapped for breather Lastly @lucasoilproducts ethanol treatment provided which I now give for free to all customers I do Weber ICT work and conversions for. Helps keep those seals and needle valves strong and clean.
