Back to WHO NEEDS LIFE INSURANCE? - Empty Nesters/Pre-Retirees! ✨✨✨Now that the kids are out of the house, it’s time to enjoy life on your own terms. I’m thinking… traveling! ✈️ But first — it’s an important time to protect everything you’ve built and even help your adult children, and here’s why: ✅ Shifting job markets and rising costs of living may delay your children from reaching financial independence as quickly as you did. Your life insurance policy proceeds could go towards a down payment for a house, a degree or large debt payments to help them start out on the right foot. ✅ Even if your children have done well for themselves, you still want to guard your spouse against any costly repercussions of you passing away like funeral expenses, mortgage and credit card debt. Life insurance could enable your spouse to live comfortably after you’ll stop contributing to a retirement fund. Bottomline, Life insurance is a simple, affordable way to shield your family even when you are no longer with them. Now, it’s time to travel🚘. Learn more here : https://linktr.ee/lezlie.ptorres1. BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) - A woman accused of attempted kidnapping of a baby at Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital was arrested Thursday. Police say that Dinesty Selmon, 21, has been seen visiting the hospital since March 1. Selmon gave a fake name and room number to access the child's room, according to police. That's when she was granted the access code to go inside. The resource officer that works at the hospital noticed Selmon constantly went to different floors of the hospital, talking to patients and even pretended to be the mother of the baby. A nurse who noticed her frequent visits, called the nurse at the intensive care unit about Selmon, later discovering that she's been entering the child's room for weeks. Selmon allegedly told her boyfriend that the child was theirs and even gave a fake name of the baby, officials said. They said that the boyfriend actually called the hospital and requested to know more information about the baby. Selmon reportedly began to make hospital visits with the boyfriend, requesting medical appointments with the baby, even telling the nurses the baby's medical records. When the boyfriend told the hospital the baby's fake name, he was told that those records didn't exist, according to officials. On March 12, Baton Rouge Police Detectives were given enough information to obtain an arrest warrant. On March 26, Selmon was arrested by the Bossier City Police Department and booked as a fugitive. On Thursday, BRPD Detectives arrived at the Bossier City Police Department and transferred Selmon back to Baton Rouge where she is now booked in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Selmon is charged with attempted kidnapping and seven counts of unauthorized entry of a business. This is still an ongiong investigation. Anyone having any information on the attempted kidnapping is urged to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867. You can remain anonymous. ROME (AP) - Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of 12 women inmates at a Rome prison during a Holy Thursday ritual meant to emphasize his vocation of service and humility. The 87-year-old Francis performed the ritual from his wheelchair, after recent ailments have compounded his mobility problems. The Rebibbia prison venue was outfitted to accommodate his needs: The women sat on stools on a raised-up platform, enabling the pope to move down the line with ease from his wheelchair without having to strain himself. Many of the women wept as Francis washed their feet, gently pouring water over one bared foot and patting it dry with a small towel. He finished the gesture by kissing each foot, often looking up to the woman with a smile. The Holy Thursday foot-washing ceremony is a hallmark of every Holy Week and recalls the foot-washing Jesus performed on his 12 apostles at their last supper together before he was crucified. Francis revolutionized the ritual for the Vatican by insisting, from his very first Holy Thursday as pope in 2013, to include women and people of other faiths among the 12. Previously, popes performed the ritual on Catholic men only at a Rome basilica. Francis has traveled each year to a prison, refugee center or youth detention facility to emphasize his belief that a priest's vocation is to serve especially those most on the margins. In his brief homily, delivered off-the-cuff, Francis explained the meaning of the gesture. "Jesus humiliates himself," Francis said. "With this gesture, he makes us understand what he had said: I am not here to be served, but to serve.'" "He teaches us the path of service," Francis said. Francis appeared in good shape at the prison, even after presiding over a long Mass earlier in the day in St. Peter's Basilica. During the morning liturgy, he delivered a lengthy homily with a set of marching orders to Rome-based priests at the start of a busy few days leading to Easter. Francis has been hobbled by a long bout of respiratory problems this winter and in recent weeks has asked an aide to read aloud his remarks to spare him the stra #wgno #crimewatchneworleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - Five days after a quadruple shooting at the corner of North Roman and A. P. Tureaud, the neighborhood is no longer cordoned off and teaming with NOPD officers. But the search for the two people responsible for shooting the victims, killing two of them, is still underway. The case is the latest one to roll on the Wheel of Justice. According to police, the crime happened on Friday, March 22, around 1:00 in the afternoon. At the scene, one neighbor told WGNO News that he heard as many as 30 gunshots. At the scene, police found four people shot. The two men who died were identified by the coroner's office on Monday as Reginald Thompson, 64, and Farrell Davis, 56. Police say that two men in a pickup truck were responsible for the attack. One fired the shots while the other acted as the getaway driver. Later in the afternoon on Friday, the truck was found dumped about a mile and a half away at North Tonti and Port streets. But police are hoping their next break will be information that leads to the arrests of the killers responsible for the attack. If you can help, CrimeStoppers is offering a $5k reward in the case. Just call 504-822-1111. You don't have to reveal your name or testify in court to receive the cash. So far, more than 460 people have been booked after their cases rolled on the Wheel of Justice. NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - City Council members are calling on the Department of Public Works to create a master plan outlining how they plan to address broken or missing streetlights. The department says more than 100 of those lights are out because of thieves stripping streetlights of copper wire. "Do we have to switch out materials so that they don't contain copper? Do we switch to solar? Do we switch to aluminum? That's what the department needs to figure out," said Council Member Helena Moreno. Preventing the copper thefts is also proving to be a difficult task. Hans Ganthier with the New Orleans Police Department said, "I wish we could patrol everywhere on the interstate, but we just don't have that capability yet." NOPD joins the ranks of departments nationwide struggling with staffing shortages. "NOPD does not have really the resources to just be patrolling, looking for potential copper thieves. I think that this would be an excellent way that Troop Nola could help the city of New Orleans," said Moreno. Besides helping drivers see at night, city officials claim studies show that better lighting can help curb crime. DPW is working with the District Attorney's office through its New Orleans Data-Informed Community Engagement, or "NO DICE," program. This program allows law enforcement to assess areas of the city more at risk of criminal activity and they are using that data to prioritize which lights they will repair first. It's never been a gambling casino but the name likely evolved over time as it was referred to as a Cantina/Casina/Casino. The "Casino" name seemed to be more popular with previous generations and perhaps the first 100 years, but I suspect that name is quickly fading away. Around 30 rockets were launched from Lebanon toward northern Israel on Wednesday morning, according to the Israeli military. Hezbollah took responsibility for the launches and said they were in response to an Israeli airstrike on a paramedic center linked to a Lebanese Sunni Muslim group in south Lebanon that killed seven of its members overnight. Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group began launching rockets toward Israel one day after Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7. There has been near-daily violence, mostly confined to the area along the Lebanon-Israel border, and international mediators are scrambling to prevent an all-out war between Hezbollah and Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that his government will not accept Hamas' "delusional" conditions for a cease-fire in Gaza. The militant group rejected the latest truce proposal because it says Israel is ignoring the group's core demands: an end to the war and Israel's full withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Israel seeks to destroy Hamas and to recover all of the approximately 100 Israeli hostages still in Gaza, as well as the remains of some 30 others. Some 1,200 people were killed in Israel and another 250 people abducted when militants launched a surprise attack out of Gaza on Oct. 7, triggering the war. More than 32,000 people have been killed in Gaza and more than 74,000 wounded, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which doesn't differentiate between civilians and combatants in its tally. The ministry says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead. Currently: - Israel and Hamas dig in as pressure builds for a cease-fire in Gaza. - With its soldiers mired in Gaza, Israel is also fighting over drafting the ultra-Orthodox. - They fled kibbutzim after Hamas attacked. Now, many Israelis must decide whether to go back. - Seven Lebanese and an Israeli are killed in an exchange of fire along the Lebanon-Israel border. - Find more AP coverage at https://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war. ATLANTA (AP) - Attorneys are asking a U.S. appeals court to throw out the hate crime convictions of three white men who used pickup trucks to chase Ahmaud Arbery through the streets of a Georgia subdivision before one of them killed the running Black man with a shotgun. A panel of judges from the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta was scheduled to hear oral arguments Wednesday in a case that followed a national outcry over Arbery's death. The white men's lawyers argue that evidence of past racist comments they made didn't prove a racist intent to harm. On Feb. 23, 2020, father and son Greg and Travis McMichael armed themselves with guns and drove in pursuit of Arbery after spotting the 25-year-old man running in their neighborhood outside the port city of Brunswick. A neighbor, William "Roddie" Bryan, joined the chase in his own truck and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael shooting Arbery in the street. More than two months passed without arrests, until Bryan's graphic video of the killing leaked online and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the case from local police. Charges soon followed. All three men were convicted of murder in a Georgia state court in late 2021. After a second trial in early 2022 in federal court, a jury found the trio guilty of hate crimes and attempted kidnapping, concluding the men targeted Arbery because he was Black. In legal briefs filed ahead of their appeals court arguments, lawyers for Greg McMichael and Bryan cited prosecutors' use of more than two dozen social media posts and text messages, as well as witness testimony, that showed all three men using racist slurs or otherwise disparaging Black people. Bryan's attorney, Pete Theodocion, said Bryan's past racist statements inflamed the trial jury while failing to prove that Arbery was pursued because of his race. Instead, Arbery was chased because the three men mistakenly suspected he was a fleeing criminal, according to A.J. Balbo, Greg McMichael's lawyer. Greg McMichael initiated the chase when Arbery ran past his home, saying he recognized the young Black man from #wgno #crimewatchneworleans

Anies Baswedan, who received nearly 41 million votes, or 24.9%, filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court on March 21, a day after the official results announcement. Another candidate, former Central Java Gov. Ganjar Pranowo, who was backed by the governing Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, received the smallest share of votes at 27 million, or 16.5%. His legal team filed a complaint to the court on March 23. Baswedan's lawsuit claimed that irregularities occurred before, during and after the election that resulted in Subianto's victory, and his legal team will reveal its evidence and arguments in the court hearings. Subianto chose as his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the son of the popular outgoing president Joko Widodo. The Constitutional Court had made an exception to the minimum age requirement of 40 for candidates. Baswedan and Pranowo both criticized 37-year-old Raka's participation in the election. Anwar Usman, who was the court's chief justice when the exception was made, is Widodo's brother-in-law. An ethics panel later forced Usman to resign for failing to recuse himself and for making last-minute changes to the candidacy requirements, but allowed him to remain on the court as long as he does not participate in election-related cases. The election complaints were heard separately Wednesday by the court, where Baswedan had the first turn in the morning and Pranowo was slated in the afternoon. "We witness with deep concern a series of irregularities that have tarnished the integrity of our democracy," Baswedan told the court. He specifically pointed to the court's decision allowing Raka #wgno #crimewatchneworleans

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah woman who authorities say fatally poisoned her husband in 2022, then published a children's book about grief, now faces another attempted murder charge for allegedly drugging him weeks earlier on Valentine's Day. Kouri Richins, 33, is accused of killing her husband with a lethal dose of fentanyl at their home in a small mountain town near Park City in March 2022. New charging documents filed Monday by Summit County prosecutors allege that was not her first attempt on his life. They detail the perilous months preceding Eric Richins' death, painting a picture of a paranoid man walking on eggshells around his wife as she made secret financial arrangements and bought illicit drugs that were later found in his system. Prosecutors have said previously that Kouri Richins, who is being held without bail, may have tried to poison her husband the month before his death, but they did not file the additional charges until this week. The chilling case of a once-beloved author accused of profiting off her own violent crime has captivated true-crime enthusiasts in the year since she was arrested for her husband's murder. She had self-published "Are You With Me?" - an illustrated storybook about a father with angel wings watching over his young son after passing away. Once lauded as a heartwarming must-read for any child who has lost a loved one, the book has since become a powerful tool for prosecutors arguing that Kouri Richins carried out a calculated murder plot and attempted cover-up. The mother of three repeatedly called her husband's death unexpected while promoting her book and was commended by many for helping her sons and other young children process the death of a parent. Her attorney, Skye Lazaro, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the new charges. Lazaro has argued in early hearings that the evidence against her client was dubious and circumstantial. One bite of his favorite sandwich - left with a note in the front seat of his truck on Valentine's Day - made Eric Richins, 39, break out in hives and black out, prosecutors allege in the #wgno #crimewatchneworleans

(WGNO) - A judge has denied a bond reduction request for Leon Ruffin, a Jefferson Parish inmate who is accused of escaping police custody in February. HOUSTON (AP) - Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday agreed to pay nearly $300,000 in restitution under a deal to end criminal securities fraud charges that have shadowed the Republican for nearly a decade. The announcement by special prosecutors in a Houston courtroom came less than three weeks before Paxton was set to stand trial on felony charges that could have led to a prison sentence. It was the closest Paxton - who was indicted in 2015 - has ever come to trial over accusations that he duped investors in a tech startup near Dallas. Under the 18-month pre-trial agreement, the special prosecutors would drop three felony counts against Paxton, while he must pay full restitution to victims, and complete 100 hours of community service and 15 hours of legal ethics education. Paxton was in the courtroom but made no comment other than affirming to state District Judge Andrea Beall that his signature was on the agreement. If he had been convicted, Paxton could have been sentenced to life in prison. Paxton's attorneys emphasized in a statement Tuesday that he made no admission of guilt under the agreement. "This case has been pending literally longer than the Beatles were together - it was time to move on - and this proposal by the Special Prosecutors allows him to do just that," said Don Cogdell, one of Paxton's attorney. The agreement with prosecutors, which lets Paxton remain in his elected position and doesn't affect his law license, is another huge legal and political victory for one of the nation's most visible Republican state attorney generals. The end of the case comes six months after Paxton was acquitted of corruption charges in an impeachment trial in the Texas Senate. Brian Wice, a Houston attorney who was assigned as a special prosecutor in the case, described the deal as a victory that requires Paxton to repay investors, one of whom is a former GOP lawmaker who served with Paxton in the Texas Legislature. Wice acknowledged the long arc of the case that shuffled between four different judges over the years, ping-ponged between courtrooms in Dallas and Houston, and #wgno #crimewatchneworleans

McALLEN, Texas (Border Report) - Four family members have been sentenced to federal prison for operating what authorities say was an extensive human smuggling organization in South Texas. The family members on March 15 received prison sentences ranging from six and a half to 15 years, according to Homeland Security Investigations in Del Rio, Texas. U.S. District Judge Alia Moses on March 15 ordered Eva Maria Galeas, 43, of San Antonio, to serve 15 years; Lisa Marie Ortega, 25, of San Antonio, to serve 13 years; Sandra Galeas-Mejia, 48, of Mexico, to serve seven years; and Norma Galeas-Mejia, 52, of Honduras, to serve 6.5 years. Moses also ordered the forfeiture of $603,593 discovered in a safe during the home search of Roberto Galeas-Mejia, Eva Galeas and Ortega, in Del Rio. According to court documents, the four were identified as co-conspirators of Roberto Galeas-Mejia, 47, of Honduras. He is the husband to Norma Galeas-Mejia Galeas, stepfather to Ortega and brother of the other two defendants, and authorities say he led a San Antonio-based human smuggling organization, overseeing activities that included the transportation and harboring of undocumented noncitizens and the coordination of payments. Officials say Eva Galeas, Ortega, Sandra Galeas-Mejia, and Norma Galeas-Mejia played roles in accepting and withdrawing human smuggling proceeds. Funds were funneled through the conspirators' bank accounts and used to pay drivers and stash house operators, rent stash houses, and to further aid the operation. Funds were also used for personal expenses such as vehicle purchases. Authorities arrested the family members in 2019 and three were found guilty by a federal jury in July 2022. "These defendants, along with Roberto Galeas-Mejia, built a family enterprise through human smuggling operations," said U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza for the Western District of Texas. "Thanks to our federal partners at HSI and Border Patrol, along with our state and local law enforcement partners, the Galeas human smuggling business ultimately failed. (WGNO) - A man is facing an attempted murder charge after he allegedly injured a Terrebonne Parish deputy while trying to drive away from a traffic stop. The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office reported deputies responded to a call of a disturbance in the 200 block of Marina Drive on March 17, where they learned a man had allegedly threatened another man after "reporting that the male was seen using illegal drugs." Deputies then received a description of the man's car and began patrolling the area. On March 22, TPSO deputies said they spotted a car that matched the description and pulled it over. During the stop, TPSO deputies spoke with a man, identified as 33-year-old Justin Ross Sons, who allegedly attempted to drive away from the scene. The deputy tried to stop Sons by grabbing onto the car when he tried to drive off. According to the TPSO, "Sons made aggressive driving maneuvers with the appearance of intentionally forcing the Deputy to release from the vehicle and fall to the ground." Sons allegedly drove away from the scene. The TPSO reported that the deputy was injured and last reported to be in stable condition. Deputies then issued a warrant for Sons' arrest on charges of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer and resisting an officer by force or violence. Calls mounted on Monday to harshly punish those behind the Russia concert hall attack that killed more than 130 people as authorities combed the burned-out ruins of the shopping and entertainment complex for more bodies. Four men, charged with carrying out a terrorist attack, appeared in court Sunday night and showed signs of being severely beaten. Russia's Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said the investigation is still ongoing but vowed that "the perpetrators will be punished, they do not deserve mercy." Former President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy head of Russia's Security Council, urged authorities to "kill them all." The attack Friday night on Crocus City Hall on the western outskirts of Moscow left 137 people dead and over 180 injured, proving to be the deadliest in Russia in years. A total of 97 people remained hospitalized, officials said. As they mowed down concertgoers with gunfire, the attackers set fire to the vast concert hall, and the resulting blaze caused the roof to collapse. The search operation will continue until at least Tuesday afternoon, officials said. An affiliate of the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, and U.S. intelligence backed up their claims. But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to assign blame, urging reporters Monday to wait for the results of the investigation in Russia. He also refused to comment on reports that the U.S. warned authorities in Moscow on March 7 about a possible terrorist attack, saying any such intelligence is confidential. The four suspects were identified in the Russian media as Tajik nationals. At least two of the suspects admitted culpability, court officials said, although their conditions raised questions about whether their statements were coerced. The men were identified as Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, 32; Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, 30; Shamsidin Fariduni, 25; and Mukhammadsobir Faizov, 19. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Russia's Federal Security Service said seven other suspects have been detained, but their fate remained unclear. Russian media had reported the four w #wgno #crimewatchneworleans

The auditorium at Crocus City Hall was about three-quarters full, with the crowd waiting to see Picnic, a band popular since the Soviet days of the early 1980s. But the concert was sold out in the 6,200-seat hall, so some of the audience was still likely getting food or were shedding their heavy coats in the cloakroom. It was 7-10 minutes before the start of the show, scheduled for 8 p.m., said concertgoer Dave Primov. Then came the popping sounds. "Initially I thought: fireworks or something like that…" Primov told The Associated Press. "I looked at my colleague, and he also said: Fireworks, probably.'" But it wasn't pyrotechnics. At least four khaki-clad men with automatic weapons were in the building, firing incessantly. Then they set the concert hall on fire. It was the start of the deadliest attack on Russian soil in years that left 137 people dead and more than 180 more injured in what President Vladimir Putin called "a bloody, barbaric terrorist act." Although he sought to tie Ukraine to it, an affiliate of the Islamic State group claimed responsibility - which U.S. intelligence officials confirmed. Kyiv denied any involvement. Four suspects were arrested in Russia's Bryansk region. FRIDAY NIGHT Crocus City Hall is a large entertainment and shopping complex in Krasnogorsk, a suburb on the northwestern edge of Moscow. It was built by Azerbaijan-born billionaire and property developer Aras Agalarov, who had ties to Donald Trump before he became U.S. president. While Trump was a co-owner of the Miss Universe beauty pageant, he signed an agreement with Agalarov to hold the event at Crocus in 2013. On Friday night, its vast hallways became a scene of slaughter as the gunmen entered and made their way to the auditorium, firing at anyone nearby, sometimes at point-blank range. Videos taken by those in the hallways and in the auditorium showed people screaming and trying to flee as the gunmen continued firing shots. Some hid behind the dark-red seats and tried to crawl toward the exits, according to footage and accounts of survivors reported in the media. In one video, a young m #wgno #crimewatchneworleans

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) - A scheduled "Drag Queen Story Hour" at a Pennsylvania library that had drawn opposition was canceled Saturday after a suspicious package was found in the building and two blocks were evacuated after threats were reported, authorities said. Police evacuated the Lancaster Public Library after the package was found. A state police bomb squad later cleared the library, but police said "additional reported threats" were still being investigated. Residents of the block and another block nearby were told to evacuate, an order lifted several hours later. A city spokesperson later told LancasterOnline that a dog had alerted on the package and that the contents were later found to be "benign" but "subsequently, we received additional written threats via email." Lancaster Pride, a nonprofit that celebrates the town's LGBTQ+ community, posted a notice on social media that the "Drag Story Hour with Miss Amie" had been canceled, saying "the safety and well-being of our community are of utmost importance to us." The planned story hour drew impassioned opposition from some residents during a marathon county commissioners meeting Wednesday, the second meeting in a row marked by resident protests after Republican commissioners denounced the event as inappropriate, LancasterOnline reported. Commissioner Josh Parsons wrote that libraries "should be places for kids to safely read and learn, not politicized social laboratories for woke ideology." NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - The New Orleans Police Department is receiving praise from the federal monitoring team and judge for their progress under the consent decree as it relates to stops, searches and arrests. The city's health department director, Dr. Jennifer Avegno, also attended the hearing to tell U.S. District Court Judge Susie Morgan how the Mental Health Crisis Unit and domestic violence program are assisting NOPD. "NOPD has been incredibly supportive of these programs because they know it relieves their burden," said Avegno. "And it lets them do what they do best, which is law enforcement and not mental health." Before Judge Morgan heard from Avegno and members of NOPD, she said she and the federal monitors have received multiple questions and a letter from a Loyola law professor regarding the new Louisiana State Police troop in New Orleans. "I wrote a letter because a lot of community members were asking me whether or not the state troopers would have to comply," explained Professor Will Snowden. "I wasn't sure, so I went to the judge and simply wrote a letter to ask her." Judge Morgan said Louisiana State Police is not required to comply with the consent decree, which concerns Snowden, citing the Department of Justice's 2022 investigation into Louisiana State Police. "There are many residents who are just concerned about what oversight will look like, what compliance will look like if it's not with the consent decree, ensuring compliance with the United States Constitution," Snowden said. The judge said she would like clarity on how Louisiana State Police will be coordinating with NOPD, and that the community is curious as well. "I'm happy to have conversations with Louisiana State Police and the members of the community who I've been working with, to foster that relationship, foster that dialogue," said Snowden. The next consent decree hearing will be April 18 as federal monitors are expected to review NOPD's bias-free policing. METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) - Owning a Kia in New Orleans is a scary feeling for drivers, as they remain a high-profile target for criminals. Kia is going from city to city to help people install new anti-theft software for free. They said it could keep criminals away from the cars. "We know this area has been impacted strongly. We have been working with local law enforcement and one of the things they've said is if you can help out the local dealers. It could make a big impact. Let the thieves know we are on to this," said Kia's Head of Corporate Communications, James Bell. Kia thefts began to rise following a viral TikTok challenge showing how easy it is to steal the vehicles. However, the new software will restrict the operation of a vehicle's ignition system if someone tries to break in and start a locked vehicle without a key. "It will run the alarm for an extended amount of time and also disable the ignition system. What we've learned is that anything that takes time into the thief's process they don't like it. So when that alarm goes off they take off," said Bell. "Hopefully this will cut down on some of that, this is a great setup," said Kia vehicle owner CJ Mouton. Mouton is optimistic the new software will keep his car, in his driveway. "I think it's a great idea if it works the way they claim it will. Kias have been getting some bad PR on being able to get broken in and stolen these days," said Mouton. Bell says this is an issue they will continue to confront to protect their customer's cars and their safety. "We already have well over a million vehicles that have been upgraded. We are very proactive on this. Because this is a crime wave that was fueled by social media, we are hoping that social media will help push against it," said Bell. If you are unable to make it to the event this weekend at Shrine on Airline, you can head to a local Kia dealership and have it taken care of also, free of charge at any time. They will be at Shrine on Airline at 6000 Airline Drive Metairie on Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. No appointments are needed. Stay #wgno #crimewatchneworleans

OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) - In Opelousas, a man was arrested for over 30 counts of animal cruelty after storing the animals at this former vet clinic. After further investigation, News 10 learned this is not his first time facing these types of charges. "We went inside of the residence and seized 38 of his animals, 34 dogs and 4 goats were seized," Spencer Cornette, the St. Landry Parish investigator, said. Warren Michot, 71, was arrested on over 30 counts of cruelty to animals after keeping the animals at a former vet clinic just outside Opelousas. Cornette said they received a tip from the director of the parish animal shelter after Michot was brought to a hospital for health concerns and left the animals at the clinic and avoided asking the parish for help checking on the animals. "He stated that he did not want us inside of the residence or to see about the animals, he then hung up the phone," Cornette said. When arriving at the facility, Cornette said not only were the animals recovered, but enough evidence was also found to arrest Michot. Cornette said this was not the first time Michot was arrested for large amounts of animal cruelty. "He was arrested several years ago in Thibodeaux Louisiana," he said. "I think at that time he had 103 Brittany Spaniels seized from him at that time for animal cruelty." While Michot has since bonded out following his arrest, Cornette said the animals seized are brought to the St. Landry parish animal shelter. Latest Posts #wgno #crimewatchneworleans

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Nearly a year after lying to the world that she had been abducted in Alabama, Carlee Russell has pleaded guilty and will not be facing jail time. Russell, a nursing student whom the eyes of the nation looked on when she disappeared for two days in Hoover last summer, pleaded guilty to filing a false police report and falsely reporting an incident to law enforcement Thursday morning at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Bessemer. Russell will not face any jail time, but will instead received a six-month suspended jail sentence and will be put on probation for a year. (Courtesy of Al Ratcliffe) In addition, Russell will pay nearly $18,000 in restitution to the city of Hoover and serve 100 hours of community service. "Carlee apologized to the community, to Hoover, to the volunteers for her action and I hope that we will accept that and move on and allow her to live her life," Russell's attorney Emory Anthony said following the hearing. Russell disappeared on July 13, 2023 after calling police to report seeing a child walking down I-459. Later that night, her car was found abandoned along the side of the interstate. Two days later, Russell was found after walking back to her family home in Hoover, where she claimed she had been kidnapped. However, during the course of an investigation by the Hoover Police Department, Russell confessed to lying about her abduction. On Oct. 11, a Hoover municipal judge found Russell guilty of filing a false police report and falsely reporting the incident. She had previously pleaded not guilty in the case. Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., are among major cities slated to launch a Real-Time Crime Center later this year, billed as a kind of "nerve center" for the integration of police technology and data. The Marshall Project looks at how these centers are blurring the line between public and private surveillance. These "nerve centers" vary, but tend to integrate public surveillance video with other police technology like license plate readers, facial recognition, drone cameras, body camera footage and gunshot detection software. As Wired Magazine reported last summer, the centers have been popping up across the country, with at least 135 now running, according to one count. Proponents say the centers make it easier for police to solve crimes and find suspects. Opponents worry both about the invasion of privacy, and that increased surveillance will disproportionately target Black people and other marginalized communities. Increasingly, most of these facilities functionally blur the lines between private and public surveillance sources. According to data kept by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights advocacy non-profit, in Atlanta and Albuquerque the number of private cameras providing data to law enforcement dramatically outnumber public ones. Private security footage is nothing new to criminal investigations, but two factors are rapidly changing the landscape: huge growth in the number of devices with cameras, and the fact that footage usually lands in a cloud server, rather than on a tape. When a third party maintains the footage on the cloud, it gives police the ability to seek the images directly from the storage company, rather than from the resident or business owner who controls the recording device. In 2022, the Ring security company, owned by Amazon, admitted that it had provided audio and video from customer doorbells to police without user consent at least 11 times. The company cited "exigent circumstances." In another case, police served a search warrant on Ring, rather than on Michael Larkin, an Ohio homeowner whose camera footage officers wanted.
