Today marks the 5 year anniversary of my father's funeral service at @overthrownewyork. I am not sad, although I do miss him in the physical presence every day. I am more empowered by what he stood for and instilled in me as a man and human being. His life was a testament and a celebration of what humanity should be and just yesterday I met him again in the form of a 10 year old girl named Zohal who came to America from Kabul Afghanistan . Zohal took the train to east new york by herself to play soccer with @artists.athletes.activists @powermalu. Zohal loves soccer and softball and has spirit that really shines like a diamond. As Power and I gave her a ride back to her family's shelter downtown I could feel this child's warmth and intelligence as she told us her story not with pain but hope. I knew was something really really special about her. At the age of 10 her and her family have probably seen more pain, bloodshed, and trauma, and horrific situations than most of us will ever see in a lifetime just watching the news, but her demeanor was filled with warmth, humility, love and kindness. As we drove across the Brooklyn Bridge listening to Queen's We Will Rock You, Zohal looked up and said look at the Freedom Tower with awe in her eyes. I knew at that moment my father lives on. There is beauty everywhere we just have to be willing and open enough to see it and that is where our freedom and growth live. Zohal thank you. Dad thank you. #whatareyoufightingfor

The morning my dad passed I went straight from the hospital to my mom's hotel room to take a shower and then to west 4th because I had be there. I bought a sandwich and walked up to the court around 11 am The first person I saw was a familiar face but a complicated individual named worthy (I had known worthy since I was about 14) Somehow he knew dad had just passed and wished me condolences, within minutes worthy asked me for half my sandwich and at that moment I knew my whole world had changed. Just last year Worthy passed away from different type of cancer. The world is a tough place and people go through a lot, but I can tell you one thing all times I laughed with worthy, fought with him over the list or a point in a game, had fake boxing matches far out weigh anything else for me and I wish we could split a sandwich on the next sunny day at west 4th. My Dad, my best friend, coach, and greatest teacher passed away April 5th 2019... I walked into @overthrownewyork for the first time April 5th 2014. When I walked out of his icu room that last morning in 2019 around 4am carrying his possessions into the night I thought I was ok but I wasn't and that is ok! It took me a few years to find my balance but with hard work, failure, and the support of great people I am able to bring him with me everywhere I go as I chart my own course. I can hear what he would say in every situation. I am very blessed to have had him, watch him, and learn from him. Dad's legacy lives through me as I do my own thing on life's terms. Before dad passed he told me be nice to people, be nice to mom, be nice to moochie, and be nice to myself. Later that day he asked for morphine to go to sleep and I fought him and the nurse to not give it to him because I selfishly did not want him to leave. Dad called me a son of a bitch before taking the shot and that seemed like it was going to be his last words to me. A few hours later he woke up and mouthed that he loved me before passing shortly after. I am blessed and have so much gratitude. #whatareyoufightingfor #overthrow

This is what a decade of recovery looks like. Today, more than any other day I feel so grateful to have been saved from a near fatal overdose and mental health struggles 10 years ago. Two contenders, Saeed Haje-saeed and Noel Fridmann, made their debut at the nationals with their sights set on national titles, while Will Bardsley represented Kingsway Boxing at the Canada Cup U23 tournament.
