When caught in this cycle, it’s tough to find solutions, which are often simpler with professional help. I once thought only the wealthy needed a financial planner, fearing I wasn’t “worthy” of one. But, I was wrong. Hiring one brought immense relief; finance isn’t as hard as I thought, and my planner was eager to assist, despite my not being rich or famous. Similarly, clients often feel they aren’t worthy of hiring a stylist. It seems luxurious, reserved for the wealthy. Yet, my clients are everyday women—moms, lawyers, entrepreneurs. As a naturally introverted person, it’s hard for me to comfortably mingle in a crowd and meet new people. You might be surprised to hear that, especially if you know me. But it’s true. In these social work interactions, I have to intentionally get out of my head (which usually drags me into feeling like an imposter), and visualize the version of me that knows how good it feels to meet new people, experience deep connection and learn about myself and others. Believe it or not, choosing carefully what I wear in these situations is one of the tools I use to help me get into that role of being social and feeling myself (or the version I’m always working towards!). ✨ For me, that looks like wearing a blazer or highly tailored garment, which always makes me feel my most authentic self. ✨ It means wearing a bright color that energizes my mood. ✨ It also means choosing an outfit that fits impeccably so I’m not tempted to fidget or be distracted by my clothes. The more I talk to women, the more I learn that clothes have the same propelling effect on them in social work settings - their clothing either lifts them up - or drags them down. I believe that clothes are an overlooked tool to help you bridge the gap between your current and highest self. And I love showing women how to use them in that way, as well. People will judge - in fact, a first impression is made in a tenth of a second. While it’s awful to think we are judged everywhere we go, remember that we still have some control in the matter.
