It felt so good to be back on the podium in @porschesprintchallengena at @cota_official. Especially after being in the hospital for a week, I wasn’t sure how my body would handle the demands of racing especially at a track with extreme heat like COTA. But we got it done, with the biggest field of 992 Cups of the season due to the east and west series combining for the race. Ok car nerds, now let's discuss oiling 🤓. The heart of any motor is the oil pump and the S2000 has a damn good one (pic 1). Just ask all the K Series guys that adapt it to run on their motors. That said, it can always be improved upon. An accusump (or full dry sump if you're a ⛹️🏽⛹️🏽⛹️🏽) are definitely the end all be all for oil supply. But they're expensive and add a bit of complexity. For a whole lot less money, 4piston has an oil pump porting service. Slides 2-4 show a ported pump vs a stock pump. The porting work is simple but really effective. Having compared oil pressures with a brand new OEM pump, I can tell you I'll never run an unported one again. Pressures on track in VTEC stayed above ~72psi no matter how many laps I turned and hot idle coming off track was ~22psi. With stock pump pressures would be 10 psi down on average pretty much everywhere. Now let's talk baffles (slide 5). On the left is a pan with a welded in Moroso baffle and on the right is a Toda pan with their bolt in baffle. As you can see, the Moroso baffle is a bit more "trick" using one-way trap doors to allow oil to flow into the pickup area and keep it trapped there. You also see the exit wound at the bottom of the pan 😬 This may rustle some jimmies, but I think this trap door system might have been the cause of failure on my 1st stroker. I would experience oil pressure issues but only on track and only after a couple laps. It would happen on straights and turns and would show up as VTEC failure because not enough oil pressure. Eventually leading to a rod through the block. I think it's plausible that as the oil warmed and thinned, the trap doors didn't let oil flow in quickly enough, causing the pump to suck air. Cavitation kills motors. Every single time. By contrast, the Toda pan traps the oil in the pickup area with a simple overhang. I ran this on the last motor and had no issues with oil pressure even running about 15 laps in a row at Streets. Bottom line, if you plan to track your S2000, investing in upgrading the oil system is *relatively* cheap insurance and provides invaluable peace of mind

Back to regularly scheduled programming, the next few posts are gonna be technical for my car nerds. She sure was pretty when she was buttoned up 🥲 Let's discuss blowing engines. Turns out when you go max effort, you'll find out pretty quickly what parts play nice together. On the latest engine, the valve springs weren't sufficient to handle the lift of the cams. This causes coil bind, which leads to the valve oscillating when it closes (slide 2). Over time, this will groove the back of the intake valve (slide 3), eventually bending and then breaking the valve (slide 4). The dropped valve caused a chain reaction, which led to one of the intake rockers exploding, damaging the cam lobes on that cylinder (slide 5) So why would I have used the valve springs I did? Well, I was told they *should* be good enough. This is an unfortunate situation where on paper the springs had enough height and seat pressure to accommodate the aggressive cams. In practice, they did not. This was an expensive lesson to learn, especially because it wouldn't have cost much to avoid it in the first place. But I'm glad I've learned it (and now you too if you're still here). Naturally, we've improved on this for the next build, and I'll explain how in a future post

With RD2 of @porschesprintchallengena USA West coming up this weekend at @racesonoma its a great time to recap RD1 at @springmountainmotorsports. This was our inaugural race in the series and we couldn't be happier with our performance as a team. The weekend format is 1 qualification session on Saturday morning and race 1 in the afternoon. On Sunday morning there is a second race with the grid positions being determined by the second fastest lap of the Saturday qualifying session. We acheived two pole positions and two podiums including 1st place in race one. @w1llizm in car 277 has the most experience on the team and got the overall win for the team. For @suavemcd in car 208 and @_ramparts_ in car 299 this was their first ever race in a professional series. Both drivers displayed excellent race pace, with Blake gaining more positions than anyone else in the field and Josh having the second most positions gained. In the weeks since Spring Mountain the whole team has been pushing hard to learn and make improvements anyway we can. We are feeling very strong going into this weekend at Sonoma and have added @fryingsolo to our driver lineup, driving the number 242 Porsche 911 Cup 992!
