(1930 Cord L-29)🇺🇸 At the height of The Great Depression, the stock market crashed and many Americans lost their money and car buying was really put in halt for the most part at that time. Errett Loban Cord, founder of the Auburn Cord Duesenburg company, designed these massive works of art for high ranking executives and businessman. The same types of folks who lost their money during the Wall Street crash. This particular model is the L-29 from the Cord brand. A truly revolutionary and benchmarking model because of 1 significant feature….It was the very first front wheel drive car in America! Yep, the big yoke you see up front below the grill covered by the Cord crest badge is the differential for the front wheel drive since this was the days before CV axles like modern FWD cars. That long, gorgeous car hides a great 298 cubic inch Lyncoming straight 8 that made around 125hp. Not too bad for a car nearing 100 years old. Each Cord/Auburns/Duesenburg car was driven to 100mph before sale to prove the engine was capable of higher speeds. However the curb weight is what kills the car’s true performance aspect…coming in at around 2 1/2 tons and made entirely out of steel and metal meant this car was mostly for prestigious motoring rather being a straight line speed car. The car is shifted by a 4 speed non-synchronized manual gearbox and driven through big thick mechanical drum brakes all around. The car’s price was the problem. It was priced at over $3,000 in 1929. It cost more than the average house! But for what? It was slower than its competitors and with its very new front wheel drive setup. The constant velocity u-joints were an extremely common failure point. Bentley R type Continental fastback by H.J.Mulliner on a Rolls-Royce Continental chassis. The Peking to Paris rally caused such extensive damage to the cars original paintwork that the owner decided to remove all paint and have the aluminium panels polished aluminium in the style of some earlier cars such as the Silver Ghost. A difficult job as the panels often required filling to hide file and welded joint marks etc - testament in this case as to how good the craftsmen were, each panel is unique and hand beaten and compared to a timber buck for accuracy before fitting sometimes one side of the car is slightly different from the other. If you look carefully you will see holes above the front wing where electrolytic corrosion often takes place (where the steel stay that supports the wing attaches). This polished effect is now often copied with fake wraps a poor imitation of the genuine article. Cars rally achievements chalked up on the side of the car. 10 Years Ago I was buttoning up the restoration of the 1965 Jensen CV-8 for @cruisemulholland in preparation for the Greystone Mansion Concours ‘d Elegance. It would take home the Outstanding Restoration honors. It also caught the attention of @jaylenosgarage, who in the coming years would come to purchase the car for his collection and graciously invite me to the garage to visit with the car. Jaguar’s E-Type’s shape was derived from its race cars, but the road car was too heavy for competition success. 18 low-drag coupés were built for racing. The steel convertible body was replaced with an aluminum version, which added a slippery hardtop roofline. An aluminum block replaced the iron one, fuel injection was added, and increased power was delivered through a five speed transmission. The interior was stripped to essentials. The 1937 Talbot-Lago T-150-C-S is a true Figoni and Falaschi masterpiece that was a centerpiece to the incredible Mullin Collection. It’s been very bittersweet to see this car over the last few months at the @lajollaconcours and @velocityinvitational as it’s now property of the @petersenmuseum following a donation by the Mullin Estate after Peter’s passing. Only 14 of these stunning gems were produced and this one has been under Peter’s care since 1985. The Teardrop defined an era of design just as much as Peter Mullin defined an era of properly collecting and showcasing the passion to the public. As the Mullin collection has been sold off, it’s wonderful this car will still be publicly displayed at LA’s finest institution.

The A6G series by Zagato is perhaps their most elegant body design in a long lineage of gorgeous Zagato designs. This 1956 Maserati A6G/54 2000 #2186 was the final Berlinetta produced by Zagato and has been featured at some of the world’s premier automotive showcases like Ville d’Este, Chantilly, and the Quail. While these beautiful cars always stun at concourses, they were initially produced with GT racing in mind. It’s always so amazing how stunning racing cars from the 50s and 60s were. #2186 was shown at the 2024 @lajollaconcours by its current San Diego local owner who acquired the car at Gooding and Co’s 2017 Pebble Beach sale for $4.4 million. A worthy price to pay for such a gem of a car.
