Brilliant week of competition on the Cote d’Azur last week, at the 13th WUKF European Karate Championships, for Katie, Jax & I 🇫🇷 Five days of competition at the Azur Arena in Antibes, France, after many months of hard work, competing and training. Some fantastic performances & results, experience gained and lots of fun along the way too 🥋👊 Elliott: Kata - both my performances felt solid, with my newer kata of the two actually feeling better; resulting in a 4th placed finish Kumite - lost out to the eventual winner in the semi-finals (who was a senior European champion a year ago) but achieved a bronze medal; stepped in to help another English vets team as we didn’t already have one, and we fought our way to a bronze medal in that category too 🥉🥉 Katie: Kata - fantastic performances in both rounds led to a silver medal, and could easily have been gold on another day as seemed to be the strongest performer in the category 🥈 Kumite - drew a scrappy fight first round, and could still be there now fighting and not having points awarded; sometimes they just don’t go your way 🤷♂️ Jax: Kata - finished 7th and unfortunate to miss out on the final, another day and he’d have been through and in the mix for medals Kumite - took a lead in his opening fight but didn’t hang on to it, was capable of a medal in that category but lessons learned for the future and can take a lot away from fighting so positively for the first half of the fight, scoring some good points 👊 1x 🥈 & 2x 🥉 is a good return for Team Draper, with 2x 🥈 & 4x🥉 being the FMMAA total for the week. Not bad for five of us! Well done to our club mates for fantastic performances, as well as to the entire @officialkarateengland squad, as we ended up 4th in the medal table, as the top English and British association, behind only Romania, Slovakia & Italy. Brilliant achievement, and wonderful to be a part of. Kata today for Katie & Jax on the penultimate day of competition here in France 🇫🇷 Katie put in a fantastic showing, two amazing performances resulting in a silver medal 🥈 Very close to the gold too. So proud of the effort and application she has put into developing her karate this year, and 2nd in Europe is well deserved 🙌 Jax put out a great kata, falling just short of the final places in the end in his category. Great day of action for me yesterday with the veterans kata & kumite all on the same day. My kata felt sharp, improvements and changes made over the last few months and since Worlds definitely showing, and across two kata performances I managed a 4th place finish, behind a trio of Italians and just outside the medals. I also got some good feedback from the judges to work on now in the off-season, so I can close the gap on the medal places in the future! In the kumite, I lost out in the semi-finals to a French fighter, the eventual winner, but got a bronze medal for my efforts. As we didn’t have a vets team, I then filled in for another English vets team who were short a fighter, with us working our way past the French also to the semi-finals and a respectable bronze, losing out to the Czech team, who went on to win the category. As always, lots to learn & take away from the experience beyond results & medals, competing at this level is a huge challenge but also a very enjoyable one.
