You’re an Amazon princess.” My latest discovery: screen-worn jewelry and gauntlets from Gabrielle’s Amazon princess costume seen in season 1: “Hooves and Harlots.” Gabrielle inherits this clothing through the right of caste bestowed by the mortally wounded Amazon princess, Terreis, after protecting her from a hail of arrows with her own body—a consequential moment of bravery and compassion that ties Gabrielle and Xena into many Amazon-related plot lines for the rest of the series. The leather gauntlets feature hand-sewn, spade-shaped painted resin conchos; decorative Amazonian insignia cutouts backed by gold faux leather; and what I would describe as a constellation of brass rivets to hold everything in place. The right gauntlet also incorporates a suede partial glove that covers the thumb and forefinger, similar to protective gloves used in traditional off-the-hand archery. Both of the gauntlets include the original attached wardrobe tags inscribed “RENEE” on the inside and are exactly matched to Creation-released episode photos. The necklace and armbands are adorned with natural glass and metal beads that have been meticulously hand stitched in place and are inscribed on the reverse side with the wardrobe label “Gabrielle.” This set came with three separate COAs from the 2001 It’s A Wrap auction. The Ren Pics costume designers were artists ahead of their time, and these costume pieces are a prime example of that. Nineties television broadcasting capabilities failed to exhibit the full extent of their wonderful artistry. Here’s a real treasure: a screen-used metal “hero” sword used by Karl Urban (@karlurban) as Julius Caesar—one of Xena’s most formidable adversaries and one of the series’ most popular villains. The sword is made of solid cast aluminum and features a gorgeously antiqued painted hilt decorated with patterned satin ribbons. Caesar carried this sword in multiple appearances throughout the series but most notably in the season 3 episodes “The Deliverer” and “When in Rome…” as well as the season 4 episode “A Good Day.” As metal swords weren’t usually used for stunt fights, I was initially puzzled by a series of nicks along the edge of one side of the blade, but as it turns out, this sword appears to screen-match to several intercut practical effects shots from Xena, Caesar, and Pompey’s underground fight in “A Good Day.” In the episode, Xena lures Caesar and Pompey into a trap in which catapult bombardment causes the trio to fall into an underground cavern. As they battle, showers of sparks from their clashing swords light up the darkness. Sparking swords were a common TV trope in the 90s, seen in “Highlander” and other sword and sorcery series. Researching the scene reminded me of an excerpt from one of Barbie Arms’ old Xena Prop House newsletters from the mid 2000s, in which she explains that production would sometimes use the metal hero swords to create sparking effects by hooking them up to lead wires connected to a car battery or a welding machine. With the leads providing an electrical charge, the metal swords would generate real showers of sparks when clashed together. This might explain the nicks in the edge of the sword, especially since they seem to match up to the nicks seen on the prop used in the sparking shots. Another stunning work of art by the Pacific Renaissance prop masters that just doesn’t seem to register properly on screen. I thought it would be interesting to use these two examples of screen-used Athena swords to talk about the various descriptors we use when discussing props. Hero, stunt, background—each of these terms originate from film/TV production. Naturally, collectors have adopted industry jargon for use within commercial and archival contexts to discuss props and costumes that have exited production. “Hero” props are those specifically made for use in close-up shots. Hero props are usually very detailed, the most polished version of a prop. They are also typically used by the main actor, as opposed to a body double or a stunt performer. Hero swords on X:WP were generally made of heavy resin or occasionally metal. On the other hand, “stunt” props are designed with safety in mind, usually made of soft foam or rubber to prevent injuries to actors, sometimes at the expense of detail. Stunt props may be used by the main actor or by body doubles and stunt performers. On X:WP, foam and rubber swords were used for fight scenes and action sequences but also for wear—e.g. lightweight foam swords worn in scabbards for the comfort of the actors, confirmed by prop master Roger Murray in an interview with Barbie Arms of the Xena Prop House Newsletter. Retractable weapons for stabbing stunts would also be considered stunt weapons, regardless of material. And “background” props are just that: unused by the performers, seen in the background of a shot as set dressing. Circling back to the Athena swords, we can see the difference a polished hero prop brings to a close-up shot. The resin hero version boasts sharper detail than the foam stunt version, with defined engravings near the hilt and a more angular point. But that’s the way.” This is my first find of the year, and we’re starting off strong with Gabrielle’s screen-worn leather coat from the season 6 episode “The Abyss.” This coat only appears once, and it doesn’t stay around for very long, as Gabrielle loses it when she is washed downstream after being tossed into a river by a cannibal tribesman. It’s constructed of a patchwork of various suede panels seamed together with the same suede lace. The history of this coat is particularly special: it once belonged to Renée herself before she donated it for charity auction to Orlando Bardcon 2003, a now-defunct annual fanfiction writers’ conference started by Xenite uberfic authors, which ran from 2002 to 2005. Included with the coat was a wonderful handwritten note from Renée detailing how much she loved wearing it—the perfect provenance! Honestly just more so skipped to the ending. I may not watch the last 2 episodes but I still love rewatching the series. Made my childhood so much better. Also Gabrielle uses the chakhram for the first time right before this scene. As with all production elements, the design for Xena’s chakram was refined as the series progressed, and this side-by-side of the metal broken chakrams from “The Xena Scrolls” episode of season 2 and “Ides of March-Chakram” arc of seasons 4 and 5 illustrates the evolution perfectly. Most noticeable are the pattern outlines, which are thinner on the “Scrolls” chakram. Have a closer look, and you’ll notice that the jagged side’s pattern is slightly different on both, with more elongated points on the “Ides-Chakram” chakram. “Oh, this thing Amarice gave me? What is this thing anyway?” I really had to sit down for this one! For the first time since it was auctioned through It’s A Wrap! more than 20 years ago, here is Xena’s screen-used broken metal chakram from the “Ides-Chakram” story arc. Following the season 4 episode “The Ides of March”, Xena’s legendary weapon was left shattered after Callisto turned it against her, shattering Xena’s spine and dooming her and Gabrielle to a prophesied crucifixion. After traversing Heaven and Hell, Xena and Gabrielle are resurrected by Eli—together again, but something important is missing: Xena’s dark side and all recollection of her violent past. This absence is mirrored by the broken Dark Chakram and is only restored once the Dark Chakram is repaired and balanced with the Chakram of Light. This metal chakram screen matches directly to multiple scenes from the season 5 episode “Chakram” due to several notable indentations around the edge of the prop and unique features of the individual paua shells. This is arguably the most iconic chakram prop of the entire series because it is tied so consequentially to the plot, from its destruction to the introduction of the balanced chakram. As I have mentioned before, metal props made by production were few—metal chakrams probably even fewer. The final entry (for now…) into my recent production costumes series is this cozy little number: Gabrielle’s screen-worn leather overcoat. First appearing in the season 5 episode “Animal Attraction”, the coat makes periodic reappearances throughout the remainder of the series, including in “Them Bones, Them Bones”, “Seeds of Faith”, “Punchlines”, and the season 6 Rheingold trilogy. It is quite heavy, constructed of panels of suede leather and shearling seamed together with leather lace. The braided lace toggle closures are held together with buttons made from cross sections of deer antler. Originally sold through the online It’s A Wrap! auction in 2001, this is the first time this coat has been on display since the series ended. I can recall being just 7 years old and reading an announcement about the It’s A Wrap! online auctions on a Xena fan site called “Xenaville.” In the announcement, a photo of Gabrielle’s coat was used to illustrate the kinds of items that would be on auction. I had always wondered when or if it might resurface, and here it finally is! The 7000 costumes figure just blows my mind. I can’t imagine sorting through a hoard that large. I’m again just in total disbelief that I get to share this one: Gabrielle’s screen-worn peacenik costume from the latter half of season 4. The costume first appears in the episode “Devi” as part of the 3-episode India arc in which Gabrielle decides to abide by Eli’s pacifist “Way of Love” philosophy. It sticks around until “The Ides of March,” when Gabrielle snaps out of her pacifist fugue and chooses to save Xena instead—“the way of friendship.” The costume includes a golden scoop-neck crop top with embroidered and beaded detailing, a print sarong-like skirt with a print front panel, and a patterned yellow sari. The wrist cuffs and the patterned waist sash that appear in the series were not included when this costume originally sold through the online It’s A Wrap! auction. According to the original auction lot description, this costume is one of only two versions of this costume that were auctioned off during the 2001 IAW online auction. “I could have saved him. How do I get over that?” Here’s a piece from one of my favorite episodes of the entire series: Gabrielle’s screen-worn chest armor from the season 4 episode “A Good Day.” The costume comprises a heavy leather Roman-style cuirass featuring Renée’s wardrobe tag and a plain leather cinch belt, both worn over Gabrielle’s main series costume. The gauntlets and the more detailed buckled belt seen in the episode were not present when this costume was auctioned by It’s A Wrap! in 2001. The production-used helmet is not Renée’s but just one of the same style and came from the 2002 IAW warehouse sale. When I was photographing this one, I was a bit startled to discover that there are still a number of blonde hair strands snagged in the rivets all over the cuirass, I can only assume left by Renée after production. This one is really special to me, though I didn’t realize it until I started researching the piece. I’ve always felt that the heartbeat of the series (apart from Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship) is found in the lessons Gabrielle is forced to learn during her travels with Xena, and this episode is the perfect example: the horrors of war, civilians caught in the crossfire of military conflict, unimaginable loss—all still terribly salient even now. This episode marks such a formative moment for Gabrielle’s character development. “It's very strange. In every story you tell me, this thing I'm wearing gets smaller. Is it enchanted?” This piece elicited a gasp from me as soon as I pulled it from the box because it is just so damn iconic, and I couldn’t believe I had finally managed to track one down. For today’s very special round of X:WP show-and-tell, I present Gabrielle’s screen-worn classic costume—in particular, one of the style worn by the Battling Bard in seasons 3 and 4 of the series. It includes Gabrielle’s trademark BGSB (or “Bilious Green Sports Bra”) with embroidered leaf motifs and wooden bead adornments; her very recognizable rust paneled skirt; and her embossed, painted belt. Whenever I think of the series, my mind always conjures the image of Gabrielle wearing this costume from what I personally consider the series’ golden years. The BGSB and skirt were originally sold during the online portion of the 2001 IAW auction and are hero components worn by Renée. The belt was added to the costume later, purchased from the in-person IAW warehouse sale in Burbank, which occurred the same weekend as the 2002 Xena Con in Pasadena. The belt is either a stand-in’s or a stuntie’s, denoted by a wardrobe tag affixed to the reverse side that reads “Gabrielle DBL.” Pictured with my Creation Ent Gab-Whacker. “Well, I know this is gonna sound stupid, but I realized that while they’re telling adventures, you and I can be living them.” 💜 Here’s another very special treasure that I can’t believe I get to share: Gabrielle’s screen-worn “sidekick” costume from the latter half of season 1. A version of this costume first appears in episode 9, “Death in Chains”, a glaring continuity error as Gabrielle shouldn’t actually have an outfit change in-story until she meets the Amazons in episode 10, “Hooves and Harlots.” After being trained by the Amazons to use a quarterstaff, Gabrielle becomes a fighter, no longer relegated to hiding in bushes while Xena dispatches warlords and their toadies. But in the heat of battle, that tatty floor-length peasant skirt just wouldn’t do, so this upgrade was necessary to give Gabrielle a bit of mobility and a fighting chance. This costume change marks Gabrielle’s transition within the storyline from Xena’s groupie to a full-fledged sidekick. She wears this costume for the remainder of season 1. As with the Gabrielle 1.0 costume I recently shared, this Gabrielle 1.2 costume has spent the last two decades safely stored away, never once displayed since it was originally sold during the It’s A Wrap! warehouse sale in 2002. Pinned to the inside are costume tags for Renee O’Connor. I only know of one other version of this costume in a private collection, so it is an exceedingly rare find and a piece of TV history that I will treasure for many years to come! “Why that Xena really is somethin’. She nearly split you open like a coconut!” These are screen-worn costume components from Lucy’s final comedic performance of the series, when Xena disguises herself and poses as Genia’s father, Anthrax, in the season six episode “Many Happy Returns.” Much of the costume is missing and was not part of the original auction lot when this set went up for sale through It’s A Wrap! in 2001. Included were the turquoise and gold print outer robe, a green and blue turban, purple trousers, and a pair of patterned scarves. I just have to say that the turban was unraveled when I received it, and approximating exactly how it was wrapped for the episode was a feat in itself! “You’ve got to take me with you—teach me everything you know!” I can’t believe that I get to share this piece, on display for the very first time since it was originally sold during the It’s A Wrap! online charity auction when the series ended. This is Gabrielle’s screen-worn villager costume from the first part of season 1, complete from the patterned bolero jacket all the way down to the leather boots still smeared with dried-up New Zealand mud. Renee O’Connor’s name tags are sewn into the lining of just about every component of this piece of TV history. I have screen matched the fabrics to several episodes so far, including “Hooves and Harlots” and “The Reckoning.” This costume came with two blouses: a dull purplish-grey one that I’ve always seen in my head when I picture this costume and also a pale green one that first appeared in “Cradle of Hope.” The green blouse seems to be most frequently worn when Gabrielle isn’t wearing the patterned blue bolero. I must admit that I teared up while unboxing this one—the first Gabrielle costume in my collection and the very first one she wears in the series. This is only made possible by a new but very dear friend, who found my account here and was looking for a new steward for the costume that she’d kept with such precious care these last two decades. This is a screen-used sword à la Perdicas and Gabrielle in “Return of Callisto.” The sword is all metal with real leather lacing applied over the grip, almost certainly a hero version used for close-up shots to show off that characteristic shine. This style of sword was also used throughout the series by various other characters, including Ulysses in season 2 and Brunhilda in the season 6 Ring trilogy. Metal weapons from the series are a less common find due to the fact that very few were made. Aside from being more expensive to produce, metal weapons were rarely used except for establishing/close-up shots because they were less safe for the actors than prop weapons made of resin, rubber, or foam. Xena’s armbands by Creation Entertainment, edition number unknown. Made by the original propmasters at Ren Pics, the armbands feature real copper sheeting that has been attached to the leather with rivets and monofilament—no resin or plastic here. Creation Entertainment licensed these replica armbands alongside copper gauntlets for a limited edition run of 500 pairs, but it is believed that the full license was never fulfilled as they are exceedingly rare. Exactly two years ago I obtained a pair of the Creation Ent gauntlets, so finding the armbands to complement that set was like a long-awaited reward.
