I'll be talking about Medusa again later today in a class I'm teaching for @uniofexeter Exeter Scholars ✨🐍 In a spin off my seminar on Women Writing Classics, we'll be focusing on four Medusa poems – two by @nikita_gill, and one each from Carol Ann Duffy and the late Vincent O'Sullivan (who passed away a few days ago: RIP💚). One of the things I find most interesting about Medusa – and what students always love discussing – is how her story is all about how you LOOK at her: it's all about perspective-taking. This is a legend that has looking, and gazing, built right in. And if you look at her through the eyes of Perseus, and most Greek men, she's a monster, a terror, a symbol of women's power that needs to be tamed, violated, used and abused. If you look at her through Athena's eyes, she can be an ally – a woman who won't suffer under the patriarchy any more once her beautiful body, used by men as their commodity, is taken from her. And if you look at her through her own, she's a woman stepping into her power and demanding that you look at her – and face the consequences. What do you find most fascinating about Medusa? And what are your favourite reworkings of her tale?🐍 #medusa #feminist #classics #ancient #ancientgreek #novel #greekmyth #mythretelling #amreading #readwithme

Diphilus of Sinope was an important poet of the Attic comedy originating from Sinope on the Black Sea. He was a contemporary of Menander (342 - 291 BC), and most of his works were written and performed in Athens. However, he traveled extensively and died in Smyrna. He maintained a romantic relationship with the courtesan Gnathena and often, when consumed by jealousy, he attacked her through references in his works. It is said that he wrote 100 comedies but only titles and fragments of 54 of them have survived. Sometimes he even participated as an actor in his own works. The Roman poet Plautus mentioned that he adopted several elements and characters from Diphilus (for example, Casina from the play “Kleroumenoi,” Asinaria from “Onagos,” etc.), indicating that Diphilus’s skills in plot creation were highly developed. Terence, another Roman playwright, also stated that he introduced a scene from Diphilus’s play “Synapothneskontes” into his work “Adelphi,” something that Plautus had omitted in his version titled “Commorientes.” Diphilus’s technique is considered simple and natural, and the language he uses is correct Attic dialect, while he paid particular attention to his verses and had created his own peculiar poetic meter. In antiquity, it was uncertain whether he belonged among the poets of the New or Middle Comedy, as the frequent use of mythological heroes in his works (Heracles, Theseus) and the reference on stage to the poets Archilochus (7th century BC) and Hipponax (6th century BC) as rivals of Sappho (6th/5th century BC) are more in line with the spirit of Middle Comedy. The German classicist of the 19th century, August Meineke, dealt with the fragments and peculiar poetic meter of Diphilus. #togetherwelearn #pontos #pontus #blacksea #karadeniz #mavrithalassa #weremeber #wehonor #ponticgreeks #pontians #rum #karadenizrumcasi #rumca #romeika #pontiaka #genocide #greekhistory #ancientgreek

🇬🇧 Agora is the term used to describe the open-air gathering places in ancient Greek cities where society engaged in trade, politics, culture, and social interaction. Agoras were typically located in the city center and surrounded by shops, temples, administrative buildings, and structures for communal activities. In ancient Greece, the Agora also served as the central hub for democratic debates, philosophical discussions, and artistic events. "Knowledge is the measure of all things. It reveals truth... and falsehood.''🌟 Well, let's keep up with honkai star rail! I try to draw more but I'm so tired that I can't muster strength to even hold a pencil these days. But I finally finished this piece (it was waiting from january already). I really like the design of Dr. Ratio, it reminds me of some ancient Greek. I wrote also some mathematical formulas; maybe you recognize some of them. (Btw school have always represented some ''prison'' for me. I wasn't very good at school, especially at math. When I finished it I burnt every note of math, physics, chemistry… not because I hated it but because I finally finished one hard chapter in my life). From the start I already knew which bird to draw beside this character - little owl (Athene noctua)!🦉It lives in warmer parts of Europe and it's one of the smallest owls. As its latin name says ''Athene'', it's always in the company of the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare and handicraft -  Athena. (Btw in the background you can see acropolis of Athens - idk how to draw buildings, sorry). Owl represents wisdom, knowledge and brings death that can be understand as actual death or change, new beginning in life. I was so happy and lucky to see this owl. I also took photos of it!🥰🦉Hope you like the drawing!💜🦉 DO NOT REPOST! #traditionalart #watercolors #watercolorbird #colorful #coloredpencil #copicmarkers #bird #birdsofinstagram #birdsofprey #birdartofinstagram #birdart #littleowl #owl #owlart #owlsofinstagram #owldrawing #hsr #honkaistarrail #honkaistarraildrratio #drratio #ratio #honkaistarrailfanart #fanart #math #ancientgreece #nature #ancientgreek #greece #acropolis #athens

It’s easy to wonder how ancient people had their day to day lives without all of the modern objects we have today. But the simple truth is that they likely had nearly all the same objects we have, just made of something else. There’s no better example than this vessel from the Mycenaean Civilization in the Bronze Age. Dating all the way to 1400-1350 BCE, and archaeologists believe this vessel was actually a baby feeding bottle, probably filled with goat or sheep milk. While ancient people didn’t have plastic, they did have ceramic, which was cheap, malleable, and easily replaceable. With this simple material they could make the majority of domestic vessels we have today. Object ΜΜ 794 via the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae, photo by @archaeologist.gr

The ruins of ancient Amphipolis: located on the acropolis near the modern settlement of Amfipoli, this was a former Athenian colony conquered by Philip II of Macedon in 357 B.C. During the Wars of the Diadochi, it served as the prison for Alexander the Great’s wife Roxana and their son Alexander IV, and both were eventually murdered on the orders of Cassander. The Roman conquest of Macedonia in 168 turned it into one of the four administrative capitals of the former kingdom. Much of what remains on the acropolis dates to Late Antiquity. 📸 Amfípoli, Greece (3/2024) #ancienthistory #ancientgreece #ancientrome #alexanderthegreat #archaeology #greece #ancientgreek

The Hierapolis Ancient Theatre is one of antiquity’s most exquisite well-preserved theatre structures built on the top of a mountain. It was built in the 2nd century BCE. Because the Greeks founded the city of Hierapolis in the 7th century BCE and later became a Roman colony, it was an important stop on the trade route between East and West, and this theater would have no doubt in use by many artists and performances. 💫🤩 Photo by @shungi_man_ee #holidayturkey #ancientgreek #ancienttheatre

Repost from the 3rd of June 2023: "Although the map is dubbed "Greek and Phoenician Colonies 550 BC" it gives a general overview of the ethnolinguistic situation in the Mediterranean about selected cultures around the middle of the 1st millennium BC. From west to east, the map depicts the Tartessians (bright yellow), the Phoenicians, including Carthaginians (red), the Greeks (blue), the Etruscans (light purple), the Illyrians (green), the Dacians & Thracians (yellow), the Lydians (dark purple), the Egyptians (dark yellow), the Kingdom of Commagene (pink) and the Persian Empire (pale yellow). Whilst the focus of the map, the Greek and Phoenician colonies, seems to be mostly correct, there are some mistakes regarding other ethnolinguistic groups depicted. For starters, the map is obviously incomplete. The other ethnicities of Iberia, Gaul, the Italian peninsula, North Africa, the Near East, and the Pontic-Caspian Steppe north of the Black Sea are not shown. The other issue os that of the Kingdom of Commagene. As far as I'm aware this realm only arose in the second century BC, so I'm not sure what the author is referring to. It might be more appropriate to refer to the area as Armenian but I most admit that the Mediterranean world is not the main focus of my research, so I might be wrong. What do you guys think of the map? Let me know in the comments below or join the Discord using the link in my bio to discuss this as well as other historical topics." #greek #greece #ancientgreece #ancientgreek #phoenician #phoenicia #phoenicians #carthage #carthago #etruscan #illyrian #dacia #thrace #thracian #lydia #lydian #troy #persia #persian #persianempire #empire #imperial #colony #colonies #history #ancienthistory #greekhistory #europeanhistory #worldhistory By Javierfv1212 (talk) - Own work (Original text: self-made), Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=18186718

𝙀𝙜𝙜𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨: 𝙈𝙤𝙨𝙖𝙞-𝙀𝙂𝙂 𝙈𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙨𝙖, 22" x 28" acrylic on gallery canvas. The wait is over, I wanted to wait til the NYC show dates approached annnnd being only a day away… I present to you a fun twist on the Mythical Legend, Medusa in Egghead form. As a Mythology enthusiast myself, the initial concept for this one was strange until I made it look as though the snakes are hatching straight out of a single shell. Each and every single line you see I’ve painted by hand to depict an actual antique mosaic artwork. The fun aspect of this piece is that the closer you look you’ll see the tiniest of markings but move further away and it’s like you’re really staring at tiles! I had a lot of fun going “outside the shell” for this one in terms of style. #mosaic #ancientgreece #ancientgreek #greekmythology #medusa #femmefatale #gorgon #eggheadseries #ancientart #mosaicstyle #acrylicart #popculture #ancientgreece #mythology

EDWARD ONSLOW FORD (1852-1901) Echo (1895) Onslow Ford specialized in ideal figures of thin and graceful adolescent girls, often possessing a delicate and melancholy charm. Here Echo personifies the reflected sound, and is supposed to have a life as transitory and hollow as the echo itself. As the sound fades away, so she will die, giving up her merely borrowed life. The poetry is conveyed by the fragile, insecure pose and gestures, by the insubstantial, wavering body and by the distant, distracted gaze of the dying figure. The sculptor is not concerned with the facts of the story of Echo and Narcissus, but rather with the beauty of death. Please join us for the next research seminar hosted by Prof Chandler 🌟 “Rhetoric and Philosophy in the Hellenistic Philosophical Schools." Clive Chandler (University of Cape Town) Tuesday 7 May, 17:00 "For centuries, speaking well and thinking well were regarded as interrelated activities in Greek culture. Plato succeeded in differentiating philosophy and rhetoric, and Aristotle offered his own version of rhetoric as a discipline. But did the successors of these two philosophers maintain the position of their founders, and what was the stance of the other major schools of philosophy which emerged in Athens after Plato and Aristotle? This paper will assess what we knoW about the Hellenistic schools' attitude to rhetoric and the extent to which they sought to accommodate it within their own philosophical curricula. – Library Journal Egy fergeteges kaland… McNamara ebben a mesés regényben tökéletesen ötvözi a pimasz humort és a forrongó érzelmeket. – Jennifer Saint #fantasy #greece #mitology #ancientgreek #romantic #book #bookworm #booklover #booknerd #olvasniszexi #olvasnijó #olvasnimeno #azolvasasszexi #könyv #konyvstagram #bookstagram #bookstagramhungary #konyvajanlo #bookcommunity #bookphotography #olvass #könyvmolyok #bookreview #bookobsessed #bookphoto #instabook #bookreader #olvasnivaló
