The Hooter was really greasy but I rode it anyway… which is not as dirty as it sounds😏 B-lined it through Greenwood to get to Piggery to hit up Hemlock, Super C, Skirt and of course The Hooter. Some unexpected rain showers just added to the fun. I felt really good on the bike which made the ride that much better. My riding the past few weeks has been kinda meh. The reason? Tired, old, head not in it, take your pick. Doesn’t matter the reason I was just glad to get back to those good bike feels. Also so happy to see the trees budding out. I’m kinda tired of brown branches everywhere. Soon we’ll be back in the green. Can’t wait. Today was a day for sessioning. Started out with a few laps of Dark Tower then hit up some jumps I half-assed last time at School Street. Oh and I had to get it all in before snowmageddon came booking’ it up the East Coast (last frame; 2 hrs after my ride). Done and done. Lot of folks had the same idea. Ran into quite a few bikers getting a ride in before the snow. The new @ride_tenet Occult V2 pedals are the balls. Grippy as hell and I love they way they look, compliment my @raceface cranks perfectly. Don’t think the snow is gonna hang around, but I’m not a meteorologist so we’ll see. Post Christmas day ride, and the fog was rolling in off the Atlantic making the School St. trails spooky… and very greasy. Not my most energetic day on the pedals and wasn’t feeling the jumps (scared myself on my 1st attempt at the boner gap) so I throttled down a bit and just rode for the fun of it. First ride with my new @foxmtb Speedframe Pro helmet. I give it 2 thumbs up. Great ventilation and the @fidlockbike chinstrap buckle is a revelation for us with sausage fingers. I’m still amazed at how well the @rockymountainbicycles Altitude climbs and pedals for a 170F/160R bike. Also the @shimanomtb XT drivetrain is still running flawless, no adjustments, just works. I’ve got a couple new bits on bobs to try on the bike so look for that to come. Hump Day afternoon pedal-fest with the XC Boys (aka The Lycra Mafia, aka Pedallica, aka The Grey Beards (because they’re old), aka We Know What Jumps Are, We Just Don’t Like Them). Obviously I’m kidding with the nicknames. Just giving some flavor of where my head’s at when I’m bringing up the rear (again) and my legs and lungs are telling me to f@ck off. We stuck to high ground as much as possible to try to avoid the water from the monsoon we had this past Monday… we were only partially successful. Overall however, not too bad. The usual wet spots were just wetter and a bunch of branches down. We did our best to clear what we could, but there were a couple big trees that will probably require power tools or a shit load of hand sawing to take care of. Looking dry on the North Shore / Cape Ann for the next few days so it’s as good a time as any to get out and ride. Friday Night Rides with the XC boys. Well… we started in the afternoon, but December in Massachusetts you need lights by 4pm (16:00). Regardless, great to get out for an end of the week pedal. I do love night rides. Familiar trails look totally different and I appreciate the change in perspective. Riding bikes in December in 50 degrees (10C) weather, I’ll take that every time. I had not done a proper Greenwoood day in a long time so I started out sessioning some features, then got serious on Sledgehammer. Despite the warm temps, some of the snow from earlier in the week was still hanging around and all the woodwork was slippery, deathtraps (don’t judge me for my alt lines on some features). I’m still loving my @rockymountainbicycles Altitude. Finally getting the suspension settings to where they feel good for me. Dig the coil but miss the pop of an air shock, maybe a heavier spring🤷🏻♂️… any coil experts out there let me know. Snuck out for a little solo BnTs ride Friday afternoon. My heart was into it but my body never quite got going. Kinda felt like I was pedaling in concrete most of the ride. Still any day on the bike is pretty great. My BnTs streak of mechanicals or crashes continues. Nailed my rear rotor on a rock close to the start of the ride, not a huge issue, rear was just slow and squeaky most of the ride. Finished off the day playing soccer with my teenager. Pretty cool he still wants to hang out with his old man. I’m probably not gonna tell him my legs feel like jello now. Tire update: I’ve given up on the WTB tires I got a few weeks back which kinda bums me out. I was looking forward to thrashing them, but I could never get them to seat right on the rim and they’re a giant pain in the ass to work with… back to the @maxxisbike overlords😁 I guess. I really like the @vittoriatires Mazza’s, super durable and easy to work with but just not sticky enough for me. Nothing quite like fall afternoon rides on the North Shore. The light, the leaves and the trails pretty sweet. - Pedaled across Beverly into Manchester-by-the-Sea to get to The Hooter. It’s been a while since I hit these trails, but they are winners. - Trails were mostly dry and running well except for the leaf litter… very very slippery. The front wheel washed out a few times but overall, all good. - More and more impressed with the @rockymountainbicycles Altitude with every ride. Crazy how light and snappy it rides for a long travel enduro rig. The @shimanomtb XT drivetrain also continues to impress… so smooth. Clocks fall back this weekend so night rides will be starting at 4:30pm (16:30) next week 😩. Quick one day trip up to the Adirondacks to put the cabin to bed for the winter. Of course I had to get one more ride up the mountain in… first time with the @rockymountainbicycles Altitude. Trails were covered with wet leave so it was very slippery, and had to ride 2/3 speed to keep things rubber side down. While not as thrilling as usual, visually the light and the fall colors were pretty amazing. I truly feel at home in the Adirondacks. Gonna miss this place over the winter. Here’s hoping for an early spring. I’m completely fed up with all the rainy weekends we’re having in the Northeast so I played hooky from work, went Friday morning riding… and it was glorious! I don’t get to ride School St. as often as I like so I hit it up for this solo session and got to check off a bunch of cool features. I also got a bit lost which is always exciting. Had planned to take the day off work to get in a big day of riding… unfortunately the job had other plans, ugh. Finally got out for a quick Greenwood rip (very) late with the daylight fading. Apologies for the Blair Witch-style camera work, low light is tough on the hypersmooth and I’m certainly not a good cinematographer. The @rockymountainbicycles Altitude continues to impress. It’s down to smash and can still climb like a billy goat (coil is very cool). The bikes biggest weakness is me😁. Also, loving the @shimanomtb XT drivetrain, so buttery. Fall is definitely here. First legit shakedown ride with the new @rockymountainbicycles Altitude. Bottom line… this bike kicks ass! Pros: -Altitude is super stable with travel to spare but is surprisingly easy to toss around and changes direction quick and easy. -It’s quiet, like real quiet. No rattle, no creaks, nothing. Only sound is from the tires, suspension an me (heavy breathing) -adept climber. I cleared stuff today l never could make on my Kona. Blew my mind on such a big travel bike. - @shimanomtb XT drivetrain is downright sensual to shift, I’m impressed. - @ridefoxbike 38 fork and DHX2 coil… sweet Cons: -Shimano XT brakes. I’m not sure about these. They look amazing. However, the bite point is weird and they howl like crazy with the slightest bit of water. Nothing to do with the bike itself, but thought I should note it. I suppose brakes are like underwear you know what feels right and what doesn’t. -I need more free time because all I want to do I ride this bike😁 More to come. Back on the bike… woohoo! I only planned for a quick shake-down run for the “new” fork, new @deitycomponents cockpit and new crankset but things were running so good I just kinda stay out and rode for a few hours. Bike is feeling awesome and quiet. New cockpit is the f-ing balls (that means really, really good in Massachusetts😁) Late summer/ early fall is one of my favorite times of year to ride, but with kids getting back to school and the fall ramp up at work it’s been tough to get out on the Super Pickle (my @konabikes Process 153). School St. pedal-fest with the “old guys” crew this morning. Of course they total kicked my ass and I was gased out in no time. The fellas were very gracious and put up with my slowness. I also made up for it by bringing the yucks being my usual wiseass self. I can definitively say pedaling is not my favorite😮💨. That’s said, the riding at School St. is incredible. However, I think I’m gonna insist to hit up fun stuff (descents) first next time. I was wicked beat by the time we got to it today. Just a normal mid-summer, sweaty, buggy, bloody Friday night ride… and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Been off the bike for a couple weeks sorting out some suspension issues, but it felt great to be back on my home turf in Greenwood. Huge shout-out to @mahakisuspension for getting my forks (yes, forks plural) squared away super fast. It always amazes me how fast I lose the progress I’ve built up. 2 weeks felt like 2 months. Glorious father and son park day @killingtonmtn (I’m the dad, my 12yo is the son😉). Not much better in this world than banging out park laps on a perfect summer day, killer trail conditions, and being able to share it with your family, be it the family your born with or the family you choose. I’m so proud of my son. Seeing him make huge progression in a single day is amazing. Not gonna lie, I’m also psyched he is building the same love for mountain biking that I have. I don’t get to the bike park very often but when I do it’s usually Killington. I’ve only ever had good times there. Huge variety and number of trails, great (east coast) vertical to keep you off the lifts, and terrific people. Add it to the list of bike stuff I love, like alloy enduro bikes and 38mm forks. I was not feeling 100% today, but the sun was out (June has been very rainy in Mass) so I hit the trails to see what kind of trouble I could get into. Got some decent runs in, had a crash and got wicked schweaty… I count today a success. I did throttle my riding back a bit but had a crash anyway. Does that happen to anyone else? For me if I’m not focused and in attack mode that’s when sh!t goes sideways, and not in a fun way. Anyway, time to rest up and get after it again soon. I love being back in the Adirondacks. I’m proud to be born and raised in Massachusetts, but the Adirondacks is where I feel most at home and most like myself. I love it because my time here mirrors the rhythms of the seasons and I’m the most active in steering the direction of my life. I’m never just a passenger. Easing my way back on to the bike after injuring my arm a couple weeks back. Mentally I needed to get back behind the bars even if physically i’m not yet 100%. Bottom line injuries suck, and I recognize it takes me a lot longer to bounce back these days. Unfortunately, it will still be a few weeks until I’m back to normal… well normal for me😁. It had been a while so my front tire steered me to Fox Hill trails for some quick, fun Friday Night loops. Not overly challenging or fast, just a good mix of chunk, roots and rocks. Can’t beat the weather, high 70’sF and plenty of sunshine. I’m so happy to have green back on the trees. I was pretty sick of all the brown. Friday Night Ride ended up being much more technical and climby than expected, but I’m not one to argue with where my @vittoriatires Mazza front tire leads me that would defeat to purpose of these Friday night rides. I still managed a few small sendier bits for fun. Lot more riders on the trails last night. Not sure it was the warmer weather, trees starting to green out, or like me needing to shake off the fog of being tied to my desk most of the week, but it was great to see. This was the first ride with the new @ergonbike SM saddle and it felt great. Also a big thanks to @abby.velo for sorting out my drivetrain issues earlier in the week (I was having drivetrain issues).
