Monthly self portraits are something I started doing as a New Years resolution in January 2023 and itโs one of those resolutions that stuck! Iโve found it fun to look back and see how I capture myself as I grow older and go through the adventures of life. This monthโs self portrait is one I bet Iโll remember for years, as almost right after the self timer went off, I bent down to grab my backpack and my ass went directly on to the top of a prickly pear. My first time getting fully cactusโd- cheers! I think that makes my Sky Island Traverse super official. One mountain range down! Itโs been an amazing month and one I am so grateful to have experienced. I am grateful for a billion things, and this month will say Iโm especially grateful for my body. The things it allows me to do are really cool and itโs been through so much, almost shutting down completely a few times over these 35 years, but somehow always pushing through stronger. I donโt take my working body for granted. And thatโs why I will keep pushing what I can do with it until I literally cannot do a thing with it. Iโm bruised, cut up and so happy to be hauling all my gear up and over and around and through the Madrean Sky Islands; each day stronger. I wish I could explain fully my personal view on foster care, on the business of adoption and the complicatedly conflicted need of reunification. My words will sound cool as they send puffs of smoke into the air on a crisp morning. Look you can see my breath. But can you feel the warmth colliding within the moisture? Can you ever really truly see me? . . . I have welcomed 34 children into my home. I fed them. I bathed them. I tucked them into bed at night with stories of mischievous cats wearing hats and moons whispering goodnight. One by one I said my goodbyes; some needing to return a few times. And two, oh my two, seeming to be here forever more. My daughter nestling her bright light right under my heart while my son never seemed so certain. Until just a few weeks ago he too said goodbye. I clung to my chest desperately frantic that the bright light within it might also flicker out. Understanding that as painful as this is. Ultimately it is needed. . . . I have many thoughts and opinions I have kept in the Pandora box of my reality. Musings on foster care. Stories of reunification. My strong aversion to make any money off of adoption stories. Hit the Entrance Arch with Chris for a couple quick pitches after the work was done, and ran into Trail Daze alumni Michael Holmes, who jumped on a TR of Raindancer. Thursday evening 2 Hikerbabes, one with their kids & pup, joined me for a 4.56 mile hike along the Quarry Ridge Trail in Sylvania, OH. The trail starts out at Fossil Park and loops around Sylvan Prairie park. Fossil park is an area where kids (and adults) can come and dig for fossils! The trail was paved and easy to navigate. There are some natural surface offshoots that we decided to skip tonight as they looked pretty wet from the recent rains. Was hoping to see more spring wildflowers but we had to settle for only violets tonight. This trail must be more of a summer wildflower scene. We did see lots of hawks but they werenโt close enough to identify. Many songbirds were singing and we identified redwing blackbirds, northern cardinals, American goldfinch, and song sparrows! After we finished it was off to Mayberry Ice Cream & Coffee for some delicious ice cream! I was tricked! I really was BARELY mentally prepared for a 10k. But you know @emily_runningdownadream . Get up and run 2 miles before run club and then 2 miles after. She told me we are all doing it for @runningfordonutz . She said @brett.classof84 and @colby_attack were guns meet us for 8. Turns out it was all a lie! I guess I've been told worse less though, and even though my hip was screaming at me to quit from mile 4, I was still able to get in 10 miles. Been a long time since I've seen double digits. Alaska Range Part 2: Our second objective was the Japanese Couloir a 3,000 ft route on Mt. Barrille, an AK grade 3 with up to 70 degree snow and ice. I was able to be on lead (simul) (although not breaking trail) for the entire climb and the climbing was super enjoyable and fun. It felt awesome to lead the heady traverse and through the summit cornices. The way down took a lot longer than expected in the dark but we were able to get a light show around 1am while on one of our countless rappels. Our descent pushed me mentally as it was hard to find all the rappel anchors in the dark. After being in the wall for close to 12/14?hours, Ethan and I learned a lot about taking care of our selfs on route and keeping a cool head when we were mentally drained (and physically for we only had eaten a pack of fruit snacks and a stroop-waffle the whole climb.) Once we made it to the base we had a 2 mile ski back to camp and at that point had really locked in our zombie walk. Very proud of myself and my crew for getting to the top of this insane peak.
