A misconception in many cultures/religions sees them labelling a lot of mental illnesses as spiritual issues such as Jinn, black magic eye, curses, evil eye etc. This is harmful to sufferers because it means that they’re illnesses are not treated properly and instead they are sent to religious/cultural figures to be ‘cured’ which can actually end up having the wrong effect and make things worse.
A lot of this is to do with the lack of Mental Health education in these communities and the fact that Mental Health itself is such a taboo topic, especially with the older generation.
Raising MH awareness is important for all of us because almost everyone knows someone who suffers from bad MH. Personally, I think it’s the responsibility of those educated to teach those that aren’t. Posting about it, talking about it, writing about it, anything that raises awareness we should do!
