— You are what you do consistently… Going nuts about the latest fitness challenge is admirable, but what happens when it’s over? Any progress you made gradually slides away. 🛝 But, isn’t that how we tend to be about getting in shape? We go all in, then all out, in bursts of short-lived enthusiasm. 🤪 Imagine if we had the same approach to other aspects of our health, like dental hygiene? Month one: brushing & flossing after every meal, avoiding sugary drinks & snacks, rinsing with mouthwash twice daily. Month two: skipping whole days. Month three: not doing much of any oral hygiene. — You don’t have to go mad 🤪 for exercise to get in shape In fact, it’s probably the worse thing you can do. Just look at the spike in January gym memberships every year. 🗓️ A crazy commitment is made to pretty much move into the gym. And only eat quinoa and salad 🥗 And wake at 6am for a morning jog🏃🏻‍♂️ Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t last. We all have limited willpower and few can stretch at that far. Worst of all, everything stops: the gym, the jogging, the salads. There’s something about fitness that makes us go “all in”… and then “all out”. 🙄 At 51 years old, I finally found a better way: make the smallest commitment you know you can stick to… and stick to it. Just over 5 months ago, I committed to doing the same 25 min workout 3x a week. (Comment “WORKOUT” to get a free guide) Nothing more. The most impactful thing you can do to get more consistent with exercise is very counterintuitive: If you can only get half-assed, short workouts in, DO IT! Perfectionism tells us a workout should be a certain length and intensity in order to ‘count’ or be beneficial. This is absolute hogwash. These less than perfect sessions add up significantly over time, and help us to stay in the habit of showing up. Then, when we have more mental and physical capacity, we can add length and intensity to our workouts. But a consistent habit of exercise is not built on long, ‘perfect’, intense sessions. It is built on short, half-assed, better-than-nothing workouts. I’d say at least half of my workouts are just about showing up and doing what I can that day. Sometimes it’s less weight, a slower run or a really short walk. This nuance is what inconsistent exercisers need to hear most. Build the habit of showing up first, add intensity later, and don’t let your mind talk you out of a short, half-assed workout! 💪🏼💗 #strongerinsideout #fitnessgoals #consistency #exerciseconsistency #strengthtrainingforwomen

When it comes to exercise. Basic is usually best for the vast majority of people. Move more often. Include some basic human movement patterns in your exercise routine and potentially have an active sport/hobby you can enjoy once or twice a week. Talking about patterns. Squat. Push. Pull. Hinge. Carry. In the words of the great Dan John. @coachdanjohn One of my favorite coaches to listen to when it comes to training. I think we also both agree that walking is one of the most underrated exercises in existence. A complete workout will contain one of each of the basic movements in there. Either in one workout or throughout the week. Some people struggle massively with one or more of these movements unfortunately and it's because as a species we are sitting down too much and moving far less. I am noticing that people younger and younger are having mobility issues and it is very worrying. I want to be mobile when I'm 75. Not just alive. I want to be able to still play golf and train with my kettlebells in my living room (or maybe a beach somewhere hot?) To do that, I'm going to have to stay consistent. Show up. That is where most people miss out. They have periods where they are committed and periods where they are not. Some people have never committed. Even one workout a week could make a massive difference later on down the line. One workout a week even if it is very low intensity is manageable. Even for people who are very unfit. It does not have to relate to being ripped and muscular. It can if you want it to, although it's often not the best route for most. But it has to be consistent. Squat, shoulder press, row, deadlift, farmers carry. That is just one possible routine that includes all the basic movements. These movements can be done at home with minimal equipment or at your local gym or at your local park. Dumbbells, Kettlebells, barbells, rocks, heavy rucksacks can all be utilized. For exercise demonstration there are a multitude of resources online. The coach I mentioned earlier has a huge library on YouTube with great demos. Imagine this: It's early morning and your bed is nice and cosy. Your alarm goes off. It's time to get up and get yourself to the gym. But you don't feel motivated. The choice is either stay in bed or get up and go to the gym. Or... You've just got home from work and you're tired. You need to cook your (healthy) dinner. But you don't feel motivated. The choice here might be between cooking a nourishing meal or ordering a takeaway. These are scenarios where we need to unleash the power of discipline. I'm just like everyone else when it comes to having to choose between comfort and convenience or discomfort and inconvenience... Sometimes I'd rather stay in bed or order a takeaway. Sometimes I do. However, since I embraced the power of discipline by shifting how I thought about it, I am much more consistent when it comes to making choices that align with my goals. Here's what else I did... I modified my environment to reduce friction, for example, I formed the habit of packing my gym bag and putting my gym clothes out ready the night before. I change my focus from the immediate and positive benefits of, for example, staying in bed (being warm and comfortable) to the longer-term negative impacts of that action (being pissed off with myself that I skipped the gym and the negative impact that has on my health if I make it a habit). 🤔 Which is better: 1. Doing one long workout a week 2. Doing a little exercise most days of the week Researchers at Edith Cowan University in Australia found that option 2 worked best, at least when it comes to resistance training. ➡️ In a nutshell, scientists had people do strength training workouts, with everyone performing the same number of repetitions per week. The only difference was that one group did all their reps at one workout, while others spread those reps out over several small workouts during the course of a week. The ones who spread them out during the week had the best results! As a side benefit, doing more sessions a week can help you lock down exercise as one of your regular healthy habits.
