Peder Lund welcomes you to our booth 38 @marketartfair in Stockholm this weekend. For our first presentation at Market, we are showcasing a new painting and six works on paper by Norwegian Ida Ekblad, complemented by a large-scale sculpture by the late Viennese sculptor Franz West, and a collection of twelve vintage photographs by Japanese Daidō Moriyama. At the center of our presentation stands Franz West’s “Bratislava” from 2009. First exhibited at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel as part of a large Franz West retrospective in 2009, to which Peder Lund contributed by lending a series of seminal works, the sculpture embodies the most defining elements of West’s approach to artmaking. From its playfulness and abstract yet close-to-life references to the artist’s view of art as a social experience, «Bratislava» calls attention to how art is presented to the public and how viewers interact with works of art and with each other. The sculpture is a prime example of this approach: a large pink sphere, reminiscent of West’s well-known outdoor sculptures, accompanied by two divans that invite the viewer to become part of the work and start a dialogue. West’s works often explore the duality of the body and mind, and with the sphere placed squarely between the divans, those who sit in the chairs are unable to make eye contact, forcing them to connect verbally. In our booth, Franz West’s commitment to fostering human dialogue is paired with Ida Ekblad’s captivation with our hyper-visual world and Daidō Moriyama’s invitation to reflect on our experiences and memories. Through this artistic dialogue, we look forward to presenting an exhibition that delves into the intricate complexities of the human experience. She has participated twice in the Venice Biennale (2011, 2017), and her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (2021); Kunsthalle Zürich, Switzerland, and Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City, Mexico (2019); Kunstverein Braunschweig, Braunschweig, Germany (2018); Kunsthaus Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany (2017); and the National Museum of Art, Design, and Architecture, Oslo, Norway (2013). The late Viennese artist Franz West (1947-2012) and Daidō Moriyama (b. 1938, Osaka) are both considered among the most influential artists within their respective fields. In the 1970s, West redefined art as something to be used and communicated, while Moriyama is one of the foremost figures within the Japanese documentary photography of the postwar era.
