#hanspfitzner #kbb #kleinebayerischebiografien #backlist #biografie #musikgeschichte #pustetverlag #verlagfriedrichpustet

Book 31…Happy Place by Emily Henry. I listened to this on audio via the @libby.app courtesy of my great library @georgetowncountylibrary 📚 I have officially read every Emily Henry book now and “Funny Story” and “People we Meet on Vacation” are still my favorite ones. This one was fine. Narration was done by Julia Whelan, which is always a positive. It had the formula right, but I was not as into these characters as “Funny Story” (that I just read.)🤷🏻‍♀️Talk people…communicate. And don’t get me started on the career move of ole Harriet. 👀 #outofleftfield Anyway, it fit the bill of a light read for a busy week which was needed as my brain is spinning. #endofschoolyear As we know, Emily Henry writes that perfect romcom that is the quintessential beach read for the summer. I highly recommend you pick up her latest “Funny Story” if you haven’t already. #happyplace #audiobook #justbooksbookstagram #booklover #summerreading #lightreading #romcom #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #reader #readeveryday #readeverywhere #readeverything #readerofinstagram #igreads #backlist #paperback #beachread #poolread #friendships

CROCS AND CRIME - two things I didn’t think were for me but turns out I love and so here we are. THE SUN DOWN MOTEL is a fun ghost/ missing persons mystery teeming with interesting women to root for. My biggest quibble was with certain supernatural elements that felt unnecessary, contributing little to the narrative or atmosphere. Kill your darlings, people! Sun Down has been about for a hot minute, but if you’ve yet to read it, pick it up when you’re in the mood for something Riley Sageresque. 👻👻👻 Unrelated sidenote : My copy is that deliciously floppy US PB cover. UK publishers: take note!

Unraveling Oliver by Liz Nugent I’ve been slowly working through the backlist of @liznugentwriter, and I’ve only got one left now that I’ve crossed this one off. So hopefully she has a new one coming relatively soon, because I’m hooked. Who is an author that you want to or have read all of their works? My Review Unraveling Oliver is Liz Nugent’s debut novel. I’ve been reading through her backlist since enjoying Strange Sally Diamond last year. In this character driven novel, we learn about Oliver in reverse. Oliver is currently in his late fifties and has done something wretchedly violent, much to the surprise of his friends. That is, until they begin reflecting on his past. The writing style is familiarly Nugent’s brand and you can see the bones of what she does in her more recent books. Part of the fun of diving into an author’s backlist is seeing how they’ve grown and changed as a writer, and Nugent has certainly developed and evolved- taking her signature disturbing character driven style and making it more tense and snappy. This book was quieter than others I’ve read from her and while there was a mystery and some tension, it did not read like a mystery/thriller. Because I know her style, I saw the reveals coming and it was enjoyable to see how she had planted the clues and then unfolded them later. If you like dark character studies that take their time to unfold and the question is someone born awful or turned that way, then this is a book that might work for you. #backlist #bookReview #bookRecommendation #lizNugent #characterDriven #characterStudy

@philipkroemer @florianl.arnold99 @topalian.milani.verlag

Solid four stars despite the abrupt and disappointing ending. I was literally flipping to the Acknowledgments section expecting another chapter. 📖 💍 🐳 🩵 I picked this book up because I absolutely adored Great Circle, also by Maggie Shipstead. This book was very different. A little less literary, and a little more soapy Netflix limited series (it would be a great one!). Weirdly, I kept picturing and hearing the voice of Stan, the dad from Family Guy whenever Winn was on the page. Anyone else? Lol. Overall, I thought it was elevated fun, but the ending felt like the author hit a deadline and had to just finish it ASAP. What a bummer. I really enjoy Maggie Shipstead’s writing, and will continue to read whatever she writes. ✨ . . . #starjessreads #seatingarrangements #maggieshipstead #bookrecommendation #bookreview #fiction #backlist #paperback #book #bookpic #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #igbooks #igreads #reader #reading #bibliophile #bookworm #booknerd #booksbooksbooks

In „The Other Black Girl“ von Zakiya Dalila Harris begleiten wir Nella. Book 42 of 2024: First Boy by Gary D. Schmidt Cooper lives a full but simple life on his grandparents’ dairy farm in New Hampshire. After losing first his grandmother and then his grandfather, the 14-year-old is determined to keep things running on his own and save the only thing he has left — the farm. It’s an election year, and suddenly Cooper has drawn the attention of a powerful Senator and the President herself. Black sedans seem to be following him, and vandalism breaks out on his beloved farm. He has no idea why anyone would be interested in him at all, but with the threat of losing everything and becoming a ward of the state, Cooper has to figure out what’s going on. This middle-grade political thriller was my next step in reading through this author’s backlist. Schmidt is one of my top favorite writers, so little by little I hope to read all that he’s published. First Boy isn’t likely to become one of my favorites of his, but it was a quick, entertaining read and the relationships that Schmidt creates in his novels never disappoint. I loved Cooper’s bonds with his neighbors and friends who step in to help. QOTD: What’s your go to breakfast food? Hannah is obsessed with cinnamon rolls and it’s a running theme throughout Maybe In Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I liked the uniqueness of how this story was told and the two different possibly outcomes of one decision Hannah makes one night. I found myself enjoying both storylines and could totally see either of them happening. I did end up liking one more than the other just because of the guy in that one. Hannah and Gabby’s friendship is ride or die and I loved how that didn’t change throughout both storylines. Still working on my TJR backlist and I’ve got one more to go

✨ Backlist Book Review ✨⁣ ⁣ JOSH AND HAZEL'S GUIDE TO NOT DATING by Christina Lauren ⁣ ⁣ Hazel Camille Bradford knows she’s a lot to take—and frankly, most men aren’t up to the challenge. If her army of pets and thrill for the absurd don’t send them running, her lack of filter means she’ll say exactly the wrong thing in a delicate moment. Their loss. She’s a good soul in search of honest fun.⁣ ⁣ Josh Im has known Hazel since college, where her zany playfulness proved completely incompatible with his mellow restraint. From the first night they met—when she gracelessly threw up on his shoes—to when she sent him an unintelligible email while in a post-surgical haze, Josh has always thought of Hazel more as a spectacle than a peer. But now, ten years later, after a cheating girlfriend has turned his life upside down, going out with Hazel is a breath of fresh air.⁣ ⁣ Not that Josh and Hazel date. At least, not each other. Because setting each other up on progressively terrible double blind dates means there’s nothing between them...right?⁣ _____⁣ Love love love!! My heart is completely full after reading this one. Hazel is my spirit animal and Josh is my ultimate crush. I love them together! Ja genau – ausgerechnet in meinem schottischen Sehnsuchtsort. Doch das Kuschelgefühl bleibt bestehen! Versprochen! FLUFFY FRIDAY hey, friends! happy friday. i’ve been in a bit of a reading slump lately. i’m enjoying what i’m reading. it’s just that i’ve been distracted by our upcoming trip and every time i go to read, i immediately start thinking about something i have to plan or look into. i spent most of today staring at a map of london, though, and i think i finally have a good sketch of what i want to do, so i’m hoping to get more reading in the next couple of days before we leave. i also realized that i’ve been focused on new releases the past few months and i think i’m a little burnt out and ready for some backlist, which is really my sweet spot. so as you see in the image, i’ve picked up an ishiguro and munro to compliment my other two reads (starnone and king parsons), both of which i’m genuinely enjoying, slowly but surely (finally finished part one of the starnone yesterday lol). now for our weekend plans: we don’t have much going on saturday and are hoping to get a lot of reading in. we also need to pack because i leave for london sunday night (chris is meeting me on tuesday). before my flight on sunday, though, we’ll be spending the day in manhattan with @anniesmanybooks who is visiting new york with her daughters and sisters. we are excited to take them to some of our favorite bookshops and have brunch at one of our favorite restaurants. annie’s one of my bookstagram bffs and it’s so great to finally hang out in person! alrighty, that’s what’s going on with me. what’s up with you? tell me everything.

What a brilliant book! O'Brien becomes yet another writer who has secured my love for Irish literature. Published originally in 1965, this book was banned in Ireland. Frankly, I was myself taken by surprise reading the book and realising that this was written in the 60s. The short novel follows Ellen, an Irish woman in London who's divorced and gets to see her son once in a while. Ellen meets men who are mad for her but not exactly to her liking. To top it all, in London, she is anxious lest her ex-husband and son discover her ugly whereabouts. So, Ellen decides to let herself be truly free by taking a vacation to France. Her pursuit of tasting the salty water, the warm sun, and the luxury amenities start to go haywire. Men accost her. Waiters wait for her to spread her legs. Women laugh at her for her mawkish demeanour. Ellen begins wondering if freedom for her was a mirage she'd ignore at the beach that morning. All hell breaks loose when she finds herself in a palatial house with some actors and Americans talking about a holiday to Morocco. I was madly obsessed with the author's writing. She writes beautifully. Her prose is elegant through and through. The poise doesn't strike you all of a sudden. It seeps into you as you follow Ellen through the bars, the hotel rooms, the beaches, and the road-trips. The aesthetic quality of O'Brien's writing soars in you as you reach the end. I was reminded of Anita Brookner's style and Deborah Levy’s Hot Milk. I think O'Brien is a beautiful mix of Brookner X Spark X Howard. By this what I basically mean to say is, if you love the other three, you are bound to love her. (Contd in comments)

This week’s book of the book is Ken Hollings’ ‘Welcome to Mars: fantasies of science in the American century 1947-1959', an idiosyncratic history of the US in the years following WW2. It’s about space, rockets, sputnik, atomic bombs, the suburbs, film, the CIA, UFOs, weirdly-named secret projects, teenage nonconformity, the fraught opening day of Disneyland, and so much more. It also boasts a spectacularly entertaining bibliography, in which, for example, Margot Bennett’s ‘The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to Atomic Radiation’ shares space with the RAND Corporation report ‘Project AIR FORCE 1946-1996’, Raymond A Palmer’s ‘The Real UFO Invasion’, and Clausewitz’s ‘On War’. ‘Welcome to Mars’, published in 2008, is still in print. #backlist #AmericanCentury #atomicage #greyliterature #recommendingthefuture

I’ve had this novel on my shelves for six years. Why has it taken me so long to pick it up?!? I’ve missed out. It’s the first of a mystery series set in a small village in France. There are 15+ more books to go and I’m so excited to spend more time getting to know Bruno and his friends. In this first episode, the reader is introduced to the main village characters and given some backstory as well. There is a murder. There is wonderful food. There is history. And there is resolution. If I was doing readers advisory I would easily recommend Bruno to fans of Louise Penny’s Three Pines series. 🤓📚😻 #brunochiefofpolice #mysteryseries #france #catswhoread #readmorebooks #backlist #mysterynovels #setinfrance #bookstagram #similartobutdifferentthan #mysterybooks #crbookishfriends #mysteriessetinfrance

✅ MID MONTH CHECK ✅ How’s your reading going this month? This book is getting all my attention this month. Starting part 3 today and I am finally really getting into the story and don’t feel like I’m drowning in details (as I usually feel when starting a new fantasy series). See that one little tab? That’s the first time there was any sort of term of endearment used in what I’m assuming is going to be an enemies to friends to lovers story. That’s page 298. Remember I went in blind on this one so I really have no clue what the endgame looks like here. ✨Book Review✨ The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros Buddy read with @szintiareadsbooks and @amylg87 ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 [3.5/5] After reading The Last Letter last month, I was dying to read another of Rebecca Yarros’ backlist. The expectations were so high, and I’m afraid to say this one didn’t meet them! A love story within a love story - sounds great, right?! I’m all up for it, and don’t get me wrong, it was good just not great. I was much more invested in the old love story than the new one. The book felt like a big ol’ slog to get through at times, it’s a bit of a chunk for a romance really, and the chapters were SO long, but the bits I enjoyed, I really enjoyed. I did love the characters, Scarlett & Jameson in particular, although I’ll admit that Georgia and Noah were pretty likeable too. Also, that twist?! I did NOT see that coming - I loved that! Overall, not a bad read by any stretch, but probably not one I’ll be recommending either. P.S. Onyx was offended that he’s not featured on the grid for a while. This was us trying to make the most of the sunshine earlier this week (please come back 🙏🏼☀️)!

Where my thriller readers at? 📣📣 I think I have what you're looking for *waves book* I burned through this baby in ✌️ sittings and needed twice as long to collect myself. But today there's a new patient and he just might be more unhinged than the she is. He's got murder on his mind and he knows the good doctor's biggest secret of all. Rich storytelling and that acid tongue, I-just-spit-on-your-shoes-whatcha-gonna-do about-it wit that I so love from the Alice Vega series. It's nice when an author doesn't assume the audience is full of idiots. Luna gives just enough to send your brain on a wild goose chase and chase that goose I did! Kidnapping, hack job murders, nosy detectives, and 3 equally riveting storylines. It's all here wrapped up in one heart pounding story. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the incomparable @louisalunawriter herself (I know!) for this early copy. "Shithouse-rat-crazy" is my new go to phrase for all things casual and professional. 🤌 ✨️ ON SHELVES June 4!!✨️ Tell Me Who You Are by Louisa Luna

I've been introduced to some pretty amazing people via my day job (virtual assistant). I discovered @hannahbrencher when she was booked on one of my client's podcasts for her then-new book Fighting Forward. I ended up deep-diving into all things Hannah to help prep for the interview and knew I had found a new favorite. This year, Hannah is one of my "Read All Their Things" authors. I finally got a copy of If You Find This Letter, so my Hannah collection is complete (until she releases more books 😆) If you haven't read any of Hannah's stuff, I highly recommend you do. Also, while you're waiting for your book to come in (cause I know you just ordered from Amazon), dive into her Instagram (it's one of my favorite places on this app) or her blog (yes, she blogs and it's wonderful). ✨If you have read Hannah's books — which one is your favorite?✨ #hannahbrencher #krummreads #backlist

AT DUSK by Hwang Sok-Yong and translated by Sora Kim-Russell ( #gifted ty @scribepub) is a 2019 International Booker longlisted novel about a rapidly modernizing Korea and the people caught up in its currents. Starting with Park Minwoo, the director of an architecture firm, the book examines his rags-to-riches story from living in a slum to rising to the pinnacle of commercial success. As the narrative unfolds, we see that his recollections differ from that of his childhood friend, Cha Soona, who grew up alongside him but whose path diverged significantly. By juxtaposing multiple POV (including that of a struggling playwright/convenience store worker), the novel illustrates how the prosperity of modern Korea is unequally distributed and how the gleaming skyscrapers of Seoul belie the disheartening grind that ordinary workers face each day. With emotionally laden but direct prose, Hwang touches upon so many threads of Korean history in this compact novel, including urban development, the military conflicts that have shaped the peninsula, corruption, and what we sacrifice in the name of economic progress. AT DUSK is a more digestible novel than MATER 2-10 (Hwang’s 500-page 2024 International Booker shortlisted novel) and has deep resonance with Hannah Michell’s EXCAVATIONS (review forthcoming), so I’d recommend it as an ideal introduction to Hwang’s writing and perspective, especially his commitment to centering the plight of ordinary people. Thank you @readwithneleh for picking this as a #ManseBookClub selection. I’m looking forward to reading more of Hwang’s backlist soon! Do you enjoy novels that enmesh political critique into the narrative, or does that turn you off?

One of my goals this year #24in2024 is to go to more in store events where I can hear authors speak, as it brings me so much joy. Last week I had the pleasure of hearing Colim Tóibin share his inspiration for his book Brooklyn and its sequel Longisland. He was charming and witty and had the most beautiful Irish accent. I’ve only read one of his books but as I listened to him talk about his other novels I know that I will need to read more deeply into his backlist. Are there any books by Tóibin that I should read? #book #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #backlist #irish #colimtóbin #brooklyn #longisland #whatshouldireadnext #literature #literaturelove #booklover

5⭐️ Jules is desperate, she just lost her job, broke up with her boyfriend and is currently living on her friend’s couch. So when the opportunity to live at the Bartholomew and get paid showed up, she ignored all the red flags and took it up. And of course things took a bad turn and she tries to uncover they secrets of the building. The first half was a bit annoying- having a desperate protagonist playing a detective. And the first twist was off putting, I am guessing that was intentional. But when the reveal happened, my jaw just dropped. I did not see that coming at all!! That’s why despite my complaints this is a 5⭐️ This book surprised me and i think it’s the best of Riley Sager I have read so far. SONG OF SOLOMON by Toni Morrison is a (if not THE) Great American Novel, so what can I even say that will add to that and convince you to read it, too? I first read it a few years ago and reread it in March, and it remains my favorite Morrison novel. From that arresting opening scene of Robert Smith, the insurance salesman, poised on top of No Mercy Hospital preparing to fly while Lena and First Corinthians chase down the red velvet rose petals that their pregnant mother has dropped, every moment in this book is packed with intense imagery and multiple layers of meaning. Take the characters’ names: Macon Dead, Pilate, Guitar, Milkman, Hagar, Circe. Take The Seven Days, a small band of brothers who enact vengeance for each killing of a Black person by killing a white person, knowing they won’t get justice through the legal system. Take Pilate’s unconventional life (how well Morrison writes subversive women!). Take the powerful friendship between Guitar and Milkman, their emotionally vulnerable and wise conversations. Take Milkman’s journey back to Danville and Shalimar in search of gold and family roots. Take the titular song of Solomon and the key it contains in unlocking Milkman’s quest. Each moment, each phrase, each word is chosen with such care and artistry. There’s so much to parse and to praise in each of Morrison’s novels, and while I think they are all meant to be read multiple times, SONG OF SOLOMON is one that can be fully enjoyed on first read with its escalating plot line, striking characters, and memorable scenes. Thanks to @scott_x_books for organizing a read along of all of Morrison’s novels this year, which has been a great motivator! Do you have a favorite Morrison novel?

I missed seeing the Northern Lights last night but have seen so many beautiful pics of them today. Did you see them? I finished Betty by @authortiffanymcdaniel yesterday. Here is my review: I am broken. This book tore me apart and took me 9 days to read as I could only manage small amounts at a time. With that said Betty is also written with such beauty. Betty is born to a Cherokee father and a white mother and has many siblings. After the death of two of her siblings the family moves to Breathed, Ohio where they move into a house where bullet holes have penetrated many walls and the previous family disappeared without a trace. Her father Landon makes special teas and medicine for the community and they live a life just getting by. Landon shares Cherokee stories and culture with his family. Each of the children are washed in the river when they are born and given a special skill or interest. Nature forms a great part of family life and the daughters even make a stage of sorts where one of them acts, one of them sings and Betty is a writer who writes her stories there and puts them in jars and buries them. Each chapter begins with a verse from the bible which I found rather interesting given the family is not religious. It is clear that Christianity has informed them in their upbringing in ways but Landon also tells his children about how indigenous people were removed from their land by colonizers and how religion was forced upon them. This book is not for the faint of heart. Pretty much every trigger warning that exists happens in this book. I will try and capture them all on StoryGraph but know this going in. I was prepared for the human ones but not the animal ones. Having recently lost my father, the notes on grief, particularly at the end of the book left me bawling. “No water is ever at rest” speaks to the grief of losing someone special to you. “The waters will never be still.” Having previously loved On the Savage Side and now with this experience, I hope to pick up McDaniel’s earlier novel The Summer that Melted Everything. Expect to see this book on my top pics of the year! Have you read it?

I'm not usually a true crime gal but the bulk of this explores the history and aftermath of the Troubles in Ireland, which was the real catnip. Keefe builds the story around the abduction and murder of Jean McConville in 1972, a mother of 10 from Belfast. From there we get deep into the knitty gritty of the players involved, the various battles, disappearings, and the purpose of all this guerrilla warfare. Keefe gets granular with the details at times but manages to keep you a fish on a hook as each bit of info is leading to the identity of Jean McConville's killer. I did feel the pace slowed down a bit in the middle as the suspects and victims grow and it becomes a task to keep up with who was a turncoat and who was only accused of such. However, it did pick up again in the last 3rd as we loop back around to the central story and get some answers for the McConville children. Loved the micro look at the different sects and ranks while also getting a macro view of Europe and America's involvement. I, along with everyone else it seems, highly recommend this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe

✨Friday Faves✨ Today I am highlighting a delightful romcom that is just perfect for spring/summer reading & will take you on a virtual vacation to Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥃🐑 THE SUMMER JOB by Lizzy Dent 📚Publisher’s Synopsis Beach Read meets Sweetbitter in this laugh-out-loud and ultimately heartwarming debut about a good friend’s very bad decision and the summer job that could ruin or make her life. What if you could be someone else? Just for the summer… Birdy has made a mistake. Everyone imagines running away from their life at some point, but Birdy has actually done it. And the life she’s run into is her best friend Heather’s. The summer job at the highland Scottish hotel her world class wine expert friend ditched turns out to be a lot more than Birdy bargained for. Can she survive a summer pretending to be her best friend? And can Birdy stop herself from falling for the first man she’s ever actually liked, but who thinks she’s someone else? 📝My Review This book gave me a reading hangover — that feeling where you can’t move on to the next book on your TBR because the book you just read was so good and all you want is to live in that world forever. I am so glad @lloydreads recommended this because it is SO good! Fans of Emily Henry will like this book. It’s got: -a hilarious and snarky FMC -a sweet romantic subplot -surprisingly deep emotional moments -a Scottish loch-side hotel setting that will have you planning your next vacation I love this book — Birdy is an unforgettable narrator and I was simultaneously rooting for her and cringing as her lie spun out of control. This book is so witty and also emotional— made me laugh AND tear up. The love interest is so sweet. I actually don’t think this book is similar to Sweetbitter, except for the setting in a restaurant. But Sweetbitter didn’t have the warmth of this book. I have heard The Summer Job is in development as a TV series and I am eagerly awaiting that as well. Do yourself a favor and go pick up this delightful book ASAP. • • • #thesummerjob #lizzydent #backlist #backlistbooks #bookrecommendations #emilyhenry #romcom #romcomreads #romcomreader #backlistbookrecs

#textundkritik #backlist #literatur #michaellentz

I’ve had some wonderful reading experiences recently, but my brain is absolute mush so I’m not quite in the headspace for writing reviews. I am however in the headspace for shopping and thought I’d share some of my recent purchases. THE BOOKS • The Women - Kristin Hannah • A Great Country - Shilpi Somaya Gowda • The Five Wounds - Kirstin Valdez Quade • The Sun Down Motel - Simone St. James • The Devil and Mrs. Davenport - Paulette Kennedy • A History of Wild Places - Shea Ernshaw • The Great Believers - Rebecca Makkai It’s backlist heavy with a few newbies interspersed and the selection definitely reflects what I’ve been in the mood for recently: reads that are not too challenging yet aren’t fluffy☁️ I’ve already made a sizeable dent in THE DEVIL AND MRS. DAVENPORT and I’m thoroughly enjoying it so far. A fifties housewife with an absolute dipshit of a husband, gradually reclaiming her autonomy AND cultivating her psychic gifts to solve a gruesome murder? Yes please. As I live in Oslo, and [almost] exclusively read books in English, I buy a lot of my books from @blackwellbooks and I’ve got quite a lot of new releases on the way in upcoming weeks. Book-buying ban? I have honestly tried, but I just don’t know her… At the risk of sounding trite, what an enormous joy and privilege being a reader is. What are you in the mood for reading this weekend? 🌿
