Nathalie Miebach is a contemporary artist best known for her unique visual language that translates weather data into immersive installations and surrealist basketry. Her work depicts the unique architecture of a storm; in doing so, she bridges the personal anguish of their aftermath with meteorological, oceanographic, and ecological reports that document weather systems and changes in our climate. As a result, Miebach’s work invites us to look into the eye of a topic we find bewildering in scale and impact, often to the point most advert their gaze. Perhaps in looking longer, we may elect to change our behavior and chart a way forward. Finally, Miebach’s work is a necessary reminder that humans are not separate from but a product of our larger environment. As such, we are at the mercy of our surroundings; storms require us to abandon our intentions and weather the unpredictable if only to contribute to the region’s restoration and vitality. Featured in our current exhibition, The Perfect Storm, join us on May 18th from 4 - 6pm for the opening reception! @miebachsculpture . . . . #mainegallery #maine #rockland #rocklandme #fineart #fineartsculpture #contemporaryart #maineartgallery #blueravengallery #maineart #maineartist #exhibition #rocklandartcapitalofmaine #rocklandarts #midcoastmaine #midcoastart #wovensculpture #datasculpture #datatellsastory #dataintomusic #perfectstorm #extremeweather #weatherdata #datavisualization #woven #wovensculpture

Carmi Katsir is a glass artist, educator, and co-founder of Waterfall Arts Glassworks in Belfast, Maine. In our upcoming exhibition Perfect Storm, Katsir presents a series of glassblown vessels representing a contemporary twist on traditional Venetian cane techniques. Katsir’s work features hair-thin white or black lines that intersect in ways that conjure the patterns or structures of air currents, weather systems, webs, nets, and even the double helix of our genetic code. These details speak to the interconnectedness of our world, and to the disparate but foundational elements chemically bound together during the glass-blowing process. This is accentuated by the clear glass backdrop his linework is set against resulting in an apparent weightlessness or effortlessness, despite the difficulty and precision of the technique. Beyond the relationship of Katsir’s visual elements with the themes of the show, there are methodological connections between those chasing storms and those battling the conditions or physicality of glass-blowing. Katsir considers glass an art form that requires the balance of multiple opposing forces; it’s a medium that demands the control of heat, gravity, time, and the coordinated manipulation of a subject without touch. In other words, you are chasing the mastery of something inherently precarious. But by making the changing states of matter observable and aligning the work’s intention with its execution something rare and captivating emerges. Join us on May 18th, from 4 - 6pm for the opening reception of The Perfect Storm. Eric Meola is a contemporary photographer known for his dynamic, biting, and colorful images that harness the beauty and force of the landscape. This is best evident in his Storm series; Meola describes the region he photographs as an “area known as Tornado Alley [which stretches] from the Rio Grande in southern Texas, north to the Canadian provinces of Alberta, east of the Rockies, and west of the Mississippi River.” Each spring, the unique elements of the terrain produce dramatic weather conditions which Meola travels to witness and document for those unable to experience. His images stand out for the compositional priority given to the sky and the ways this dwarfs the land below. In this way, Meola represents clouds as majestic active agents and the space we occupy as subject to and receptive of their downpour. In 2023, Eric Meola received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Photographers of America. His work has been featured on well-known album covers including Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run and The Promise. Meola’s 2019 photobook, Fierce Beauty, featuring images from his Storm series, was named “One of the Ten Best Travel Books” by Smithsonian Magazine, and in 2014 he was awarded the George Eastman Power of Image medal in Beijing. Visit Blue Raven Gallery to see Perfect Storm, our upcoming exhibition opening May 14th, featuring Meola alongside a myriad of artists working in photography, glass, and sculpture. 📷 @ericmeola1 . . . . #mainegallery #maine #rockland #rocklandmaine #photographygallery #photography #fineart #photographyshow #contemporaryart #contemporaryphotography #rocklandartcapitalofmaine #weatherphotography #photoexhibition #environmentalphotography #blueravengallery #maineartgallery #fineartphotography

Matt Demers’ miniature paintings on the covers of upcycled books, create a narrative all their own as the viewer ponders the connections between his brushwork and the title of his source material. The abstract expressionist painting then becomes a window transporting us beyond what we thought possible much like the content within his canvas. In our current exhibition, Loss of Words, Hannah Duggan exhibits porcelain ceramic vessels that appropriate text and imagery from online sources, considering the impacts of infinite content consumption on our mental health and relationships. Duggan’s work contrasts the tactile, ancient, and domestic functionality of ceramics with iconography indicative of the transient, two-dimensional nature of cyberspace. In conceptual alignment, she transfers these elements to the surfaces of her work using both traditional techniques and emerging technologies. By pulling materials from news sites, chatrooms, social media, search engines, and other corners of the digital landscape, Duggan’s work intentionally and sometimes inadvertently references current events and/or pop culture. In her piece, Not Connected, Duggan brings new meaning to the familiar notification that our Wi-Fi is inactive, instead, it signals the ways we may be lacking personal connection, even while boundless communication is possible. 🖼️ @hannahdugganart . . . #fineart #maineart #blueravengallery #fineartgallery #exhibition #contemporarysculpture #sculpture #contemporaryart #artgallery #rocklandartcapitalofmaine #midcoastmaine #rockland #fineartsculpture #abstractart #abstractsculpture #fineartexhibition #ceramics #contemporaryceramics #ceramicart #porcelain #newart #vase #postinternetart

Heather Schulte is a contemporary visual artist interested in the nuances and power of language. Her work frequently amends, redacts, or recontextualizes data sets and headlines, or borrows phrases from daily interactions to make the consequences of public life and political agendas personal. Schulte often works in textiles, a medium readily accessible, referential of craft traditions historically carried out by women, and indicative of humble sincerity. This is consistent in her Times, and What we feel we can not say series, both of which are included in the gallery’s current exhibition, Loss of Words. In the first series, Schulte cross-stitches bold, black, boundaries to target biased journalism and propose new linguistic pathways. In the second, she creates monochromatic color fields that reveal text through diverging directions of embroidery. This body of work recognizes the ways we conceal some of our most fundamental thoughts and feelings; as well as, explores how our words may fall short of conveying what we are trying to express. As such, Heather Schulte’s work is an artistic gesture towards civic engagement and a respite for those with a wounded sense of stability seeking a shoulder of support. 🖼️ @heatherdschulte . . . #blueravengallery #maineart #fineart #fineartgallery #exhibition #contemporaryart #contemporarygallery #artgallery #embroidery #crossstitch #fiberart #abstract #abstractart #textiles #rockland #rocklandartcapitalofmaine #midcoastmaine

During the 2022-2023 school year 3,362 book bans were recorded in US Public Schools by PEN America. In response, contemporary photographer, Karen Pape created her recent body of work, De-circulated, on view as part of our current exhibition, Loss of Words. In this series, Pape rearranges the covers of banned books through multiple-exposure photography rendering familiar titles unrecognizable, similar, to the way their contents are restricted from the public. Pape describes these images as “abstract emotional landscapes” capable of illustrating the disorientation and frustration of living in a time of increased and ongoing censorship. Her transformation of these covers equally serves as an opportunity for something new to emerge, an alternative narrative setting indexical to its source. In this way, Pape cultivates another avenue to engage with and be enriched by literature combatting outside forces seeking to withhold access to information. Finally, both Pape and her work are conscious of the transparent ideological agenda behind the bans which perpetuate limited representation for historically marginalized groups and functions as a method of social control intent on stagnating our viewpoints and belief systems. 📷 @papekaren . . . #maine #maineart #blueravengallery #photographygallery #fineart #fineartphotography #bannedbooks #rocklandmaine #rocklandartcapitalofmaine #photographyexhibition #contemporaryphotography #photography #multipleexposure #abstractart #abstractphotography #doubleexposure #gallery #contemporaryart

In our current exhibition, Loss of Words, Kate Rivers exhibits pieces from her best-known body of work. Rivers Book series transforms the covers and spines of reclaimed texts into dynamic collage backgrounds for her paintings featuring recurring bird and landscape motifs. These repurposed materials convey her broader interest in exploring memory, loss, and rebirth while conjuring the narratives and characters within. As birds take flight, emerging from the pages of familiar and informational texts, Rivers depicts an aspirational outlook for the future and our personal desires. In doing so, she harnesses literature’s ability to envelope and transport us beyond what we thought possible. Equally significant, Rivers considers what items we save to contain our most impactful experiences or prompt reflection on a specific place, person, or feeling. In doing so, she demonstrates that deconstruction can often be a vital part rather than an obstacle when facilitating new growth. Join us this Saturday, April 20th at 5pm for an artist talk with Ron Crusan! Ron Crusan is a contemporary visual artist working in sculpture, painting, and collage. Crusan’s artistic influences include Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, and George Herms. This is evident in his gestural line work, minimalist whitewashed surfaces, and assembly of repurposed materials. Crusan presents work from two related projects for our current exhibition, Loss of Words. In his Four-Letter Word series, Crusan nods to the expletives we might be inclined to use in times of distress but amplifies words that inspire hope for a safer future. Crusan’s Loss of Language series brings historical and national context to this mission. These works address the desensitization of abnormal tragedy produced in part by scripted responses like, “we send our thoughts and prayers.” The shallowness of these familiar phrases is countered by the density of Crusan’s sculptures. Daphne Pulsifer is a contemporary representational sculptor working skillfully in bronze, tile, and wood. Pulsifer’s subjects are familiar and sincere; they convey the beauty found in our everyday lives and surroundings. She frequently features subjects in a state of movement or with a fixed but obvious gaze. In doing so, her works demonstrate the care and companionship we extend to one another and to the wildlife or livestock in our lives. These interests are indicative of the foundational influences of her practice. As such, Pulsifer continues to be profoundly inspired by her role as a mother and her lived and observed understanding of childhood in a rural setting. Pulsifer began living on Monhegan Island, ME in 1983 and has split time between the island and Kennebunkport since the late 90s. She began her study of art at Carnegie-Mellon University with an emphasis on architecture. Later she continued her education at the Maine College of Art where her artistic mentors included John Ventimiglia. 🎨 Daphne Pulsifer (@edison_studio_04852) . . . . #rocklandartcapitalofmaine #blueravengallery #sculpture #fineartsculpture #contemporarysculpture #bronzesculpture #mainesculpture #rockland #rocklandmaine #fineart #mainegallery #maineexhibit #artexhibition #art #maineartist #monhegan #monheganisland #monheganislandmaine

Heidi Daub is a Maine based painter, who’s poetic work uses color and form to express what words cannot. Interested in the natural world, her paintings are introspective and lush in its saturated, vivid depictions of various motifs, such as leaves and petals. Coupled with her use of color, her abstract paintings conjure complex feelings, engaging with viewers both conceptually and emotionally. Speaking about her practice, she states, “engaged in the interplay between various artistic disciplines, my paintings evolve from a stilling and attunement, coupled with an urgency to render our interdependence with the natural world. The resultant images of coalesced line, form, color and movement are a discovery born out of the complexities of love and daily experience.” Heidi Daub’s paintings are currently on-view in the gallery, and available for purchase on our website 🖼️ Evolution Where the Creek Runs Every Year the Riot of Green Coming Home Pilgrimage When We Ride the Water 🎨 @heididaubartist . . . . #rocklandartcapitalofmaine #mainepainting #blueravengallery #contemporaryabstracts #contemporaryart #contemporary #contemporarypainting #abstract #abstractpainting #abstractart #artgallery #maineartist #rockland #rocklandmaine #midcoastmaine #vibrantpainting #gallery #artexhibit

Michele O’Keefe is a painter and print maker based in Vinalhaven who’s work captures the beauty of Maine’s coast and islands. Drawn to its serenity and calm, she focuses on capturing the essence of a moment, like a nostalgic summer day on the water, and the feelings it conjures through her use of vivid colors and common motifs. O’Keefe works in a multitude of mediums, including oil paints, watercolors, printmaking, and hand-colored etchings. The scenes she captures across her modes of making also hold personal meaning. Alongside exuding her love for Maine, she frequently illustrates a Gloucester Gull Dory that has been in her family since 1968. The love and sentimentality O’Keefe has for her subject matter is felt in her work and adds to the feelings of nostalgia and bliss. Avis Turner’s bronze sculptures take on the forms of various archetypal humanoid figures, often referencing mythos and the Feminine; they appear as manifestations inspired by ancient Greek and Egyptian beings. Turner’s sculptures take on the aesthetics of humans, animals, and angels, coalescing into various mystical beings. Each is unique and has its own story to tell. Yet, her work is connected through research and the motifs she commonly draws upon. Turner describes her work as “sculpted images (that) seem to exist in liminal spaces. They soar and are at once – rooted in solid animal wisdom, distracted by gritty human pathos, and elated by states of pure grace.” Avis Turner’s bronze sculptures are currently displayed throughout the gallery and are also available for purchase on our website. 🎨 Avis Turner (@avisturnerart) 🖼️ Meadow Gatherer, Ceres, Small Nike, Guardians, Small Winged Nike . . . . #maine #maineart #maineartist #rocklandartcapitalofmaine #blueravengallery #sculpture #bronzesculpture #fineart #fineartsculpture #mysticalart #avisturner #rocklandmaine #rocklandarts #mainegallery #midcoastmaine #midcoastart #sculpturegallery #fineartexhibition #womenshistorymonth #contemporaryart #contemporarysculpture

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we are proud to be displaying the work of Dorothy Eisner. Dorothy Eisner was an American painter most active between the 1930s and 1980s and best known for her figurative and still-life Modernist oil paintings and semi-cubist paper collages. Eisner’s work is exuberant and playful, using bold blocks of color and capturing moments of shared intimacy or recreation. Eisner was born in New York and, for over twenty years, split her time between Greenwich Village and Great Cranberry Island in Maine. Throughout her seven-decade-long career, she notably exhibited work at the Brooklyn Museum, Farnsworth Museum, New York Society of Women Artists, the Virginia Museum, and more. At a time when women were frequently marginalized by art institutions, Eisner’s work was respected and widely shown. Jean Swan Gordon’s captivating watercolors depict the intricacies of floral bouquets through vibrant still lives, capturing their beauty, individuality, and energy. When painting, she took an unorthodox approach, electing to paint using her own floral arrangements. This decision melded her love of gardening with her artistic pursuits. Creating unique imagery as most of the bouquets were grown and gathered by Gordon and placed into household glass bowls or pitchers. Then, her artistic process consisted of applying ink onto paper, followed by painting multiple layers of watercolors, resulting in bright, saturated, textured glass and flowers. Gordon was born in 1922 and painted throughout her lifetime, passing away in 2013. Michael Vermette is a contemporary artist known for his dynamic watercolor and oil plein-air paintings that represent the Maine landscape in a state of motion. In this work, Vermette demonstrates the agency and spirit of our larger environment through his thick impasto brushwork. The sincerity of his intention is equally felt in the dark, deep jewel tones that celebrate the land’s year-round beauty. Introducing The Vault Series (our collectables in the gallery) displayed in our Vault room. Annie Leibovitz’s photograph, “Laetitia Casta, Clifton Point,” model, actress; is a highly collectable abstraction of the human form. In this image, Leibovitz demonstrates her incredible ability to investigate shape and form, rendering a beautiful image through dramatic lighting and the body. Leibovitz is one of the most highly regarded living photographers, best known for her portraiture of celebrities. Her intimate portraits are highly engaging due to her ability to construct a scene and unique approach to posing subjects. Born in 1949, Leibovitz attended the San Francisco Art Institute, where she studied photography and painting. Throughout her career as a photographer, she has shot for Rolling Stone, Vogue, and Vanity Fair, was the first woman to have a featured exhibition at Washington’s National Portrait Gallery and has an extensive catalog of photo books published with her work. Karen Bezuidenhout is a contemporary artist known for her mixed media expressionist paintings that honor where she is from while also celebrating her current environment. Bezuidenhout’s work represents self-discovery and personal comfort derived from exploring the natural world and reflecting on a sense of home. As such, her paintings frequently reference multiple locations tethered to diverging memories which exist simultaneously in her imagination and on the canvas. This confluence of origin points and aspects of the natural world that are felt rather than visibly apparent is indicated best in her olive, raw umber, yellow ochre, cobalt, and phthalo blue color palettes. This alongside visual motifs like horses, trees, birds, and figures are active and embedded within their larger landscape. Bezuidenhout is from Stellenbosch, South Africa, and is based in Santa Barbara, California. Her artistic mentors include Pieter Vermaak and Bill Woolway with additional instruction from the College of Marin in Greenbrae, CA. 🖼️ Sitting by the Tree, Tree of Life, Trois Cheveux 🎨 @karen_bezuidenhout . . . . #contemporaryart #contemporary #contemporarypainting #gallery #wallart #artist #artgallery #abstractart #blueravengallery #rocklandartcapitalofmaine #rocklandmaine #rocklandmainearts #expressionistpainting #expressionistart #landscapepainting #fineart #fineartgallery #fineartpainting #abstractlandscape #abstractpainting #natureinspired

Seated Figure, by Sally Michel Avery, is a beautifully serene, collectable oil painting on canvas. The piece mixes warm and cool colors to create an alluring, dream-like figure study. Best known for her lyrical depictions of everyday life and abstract landscapes, figures, and still lives, the American painter has a unique ability to simplify her subject matter, focusing more on emotional resonance and a sense of atmosphere rather than detailed forms. Avery was born in 1902 and worked closely with her husband, Milton Avery, while also raising their family, providing their primary source income through her work as commercial illustrator, and while spending time developing her own artistic practice. Plan a visit to Blue Raven Gallery to see Avery’s serene painting, Seated Figure, which is currently on-view. Adrienne Kernan LaVallée is a contemporary impressionistic painter inspired by the beguiling beauty of the landscape. The vibrancy of her color palette and the viscosity of her brushstrokes demonstrate the unique lens through which she reflects on the familiar Maine coastline. LaVallée’s paintings speak to how the landscape is ever-evolving, whether those changes are observed through the span of a day, a year, or a lifetime. As a result, LaVallée’s work represents how her perception of spaces, which she has an intimate knowledge of, can continue to surprise her and by extension captivate the public. Join us this Friday, February 2nd from 4 - 6pm, to celebrate the work of our in-house Maine artists, including featured painter Adrienne Kernan LaVallée. 🖼️ @mymainepaintings . . . . #contemporaryart #modernart #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #gallery #wallart #artwalk #firstfriday #artist #abstractlandscape #abstractartforsale #abstractart #artgallery #maineartist #maineart #rocklandarts #blueravengallery #rocklandmaine #rocklandmainstreet #rocklandmainearts #rocklandartcapitalofmaine #midcoastmaine #midcoastart

We hope you join us at Blue Raven Gallery tomorrow, December 15th, for a conversation with @jimnickelson . Based in Camden, Maine, Jim works as a fine art photographer, custom digital printer (as Nickelson Editions), bookmaker, and teacher. Before committing himself to the photographic life, he pursued the classic artistic career path of NASA engineer and corporate attorney (with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Univ. of Texas at Austin and a J.D. from Harvard Law School). Jim’s photographs are the result of his inquiries into the ways that we as a species grapple with the unknown and the natural world, particularly as those inquiries delve into the realm of science, cosmology, and the environment. His current project, Annals of the Former World, advocates for a changed relationship with the environment, particularly with respect to climate change. We will be hosting a conversation with Nickelson, speaking about his process of making work and delving deeper into its concepts. Exploring the idea of photography and how it relates to his inquiries and is a medium to create change. 🗓️ Wednesday, December 15th, 4-5pm 📷 @jimnickelson “The Memory of Nature III”, “The Memory of Nature I” . . . . #maineart #blueravengallery #rocklandmaine #photographygallery #photography #fineart #artisttalk #photographyshow #contemporaryart #contemporaryphoto #photoexhibition #rocklandme #mainephotography #ecophotography #environmentalphotography #climatechange #climatechangeart #photoprint #artprint

We welcome you join us at Blue Raven Gallery tomorrow, December 13th, for a conversation with featured artist @s_michlovitz_photo . Sue Michlovitz is a visual artist working in photography, book arts, and mixed media. Exploring abstract forms to create her color photographs, her art shows scenes that may go unnoticed by others. Michlovitz is also a physical therapist (hand specialist), was a university professor, and a textbook author/editor. Her clinical practice, medical mission and community outreach volunteerism in Guatemala and on the Navajo Nation required astute observation skills of movement patterns and interpersonal interactions, skills that feed her artistic expression. Michlovitz will be joining us to speak about her book Breathe in Water, discussing the process of its creation, alongside how the work is presented in its current installation. After our conversation with her, Michlovitz will also be doing a book signing. We’re excited to see you then! 🗓️ Wednesday, December 13th, 4-5pm 📷 @s_michlovitz_photo “Immersed”, “Pride” . . . . #maineart #blueravengallery #rocklandmaine #photographygallery #photography #fineart #artisttalk #photographyshow #contemporaryart #contemporaryphoto #photoexhibition #rocklandme #mainephotography #womenphotographer #waterphotography #photobook #abstractportrait
