Profoundly affected by his upbringing in the rural woods of Virginia’s countryside, Monty Montgomery’s work has always been informed by his visceral and emotional reactions to everyday experiences, such as exploring nature, or trekking city streets. His distinctive artistic voice was shaped in his teen years, when he began expressing his perception of the external world in bright geometric abstraction. His characteristic style emerged as a result of distilling sensory input through the lens of urban and natural landscapes. Using color theory, mathematics, and intuition, he attempts to harmonize the collision of these elements into something beautiful and cohesive. Montgomery uses his innate intuition for color and object relationships to connect with the viewer, sharing his artistic vision through a “visual-emotional language”, as he calls it. His interpretation of everyday scenes is often surprising, as the end results look vastly different than their real world counterparts. Heidi Daub is a Maine based painter, who’s poetic work uses color and form to express what words cannot. This week in my studio, I have been working on 30cm x 30 cm panel boards. With what lies beneath in mind, I have created these and other abstract landscape works. Pathways and ancient unused tracks are interesting to me and if I see a track, I am always tempted to follow it ! I love the idea that signs from the past can leave shadows and marks on the land for us to ponder over. Also, I recently read The Perfect Golden Circle by Benjamin Myers about two unlikely friends who set about creating crop circles in fields that need to be viewed from above to see the full magnificence of them. Clearly these these ideas have found themselves appearing in my recent pieces. I think I love muted colours just as much as I like the bright colours. And Rose with dots is an example of a muted palette I really enjoy. I enjoy the glazes and translucent colours in this small piece as much as I love the luscious texture of the thick impasto paint created by the swipe of my palette knife. Seems I like contrasts! Yum!!! Just look at those colours together - I think they’ll are absolutely scrumptious. Or is it just me?! I went to pick up new art supplies today, paint, paper, ink and a random fuschia coloured aqua pencil! And these were just the colours I was running low on and I needed to stock up for the workshops this Friday and Saturday. And when I put them all together, I just loved the colour combinations - especially the fluorescent pink and orange! I met up with my sister and 2 of our cousins today and we haven’t all been together in a very long time. It was really special. We shared so many memories of our childhoods and we talked about our grandparents a lot! And we talked about our Grandads poems and it reminded me of the series of small paintings I created with his poetry. So let me introduce you to ‘Sending peace thoughts’ This painting was inspired by a poem of the same name. My grandad was born in 1908 and he saw so many changes in his life time. This poem talks about loneliness then finding love and friendship - I love it! This painting includes his handwritten words ‘sending peace thoughts’. which was real joy to find. I wanted his poetry to be fully immersed which is why i’ve used his poem as the surface and backdrop to the painting.
