Wonfor got its moniker from the legend of the witch’s curse, which dictated that if people saw one Majipi, sorrow would befall them. Of course, this meant people would keep Majipis in big groups, and they themselves would hunt in big social gatherings. But when they metamorphed into their second form, Tamers found them much harder to control due to their increased power, and could often only control one at a time. This led to people often avoiding owning a Wonfor and releasing them into the wild, as they did not want to be cursed with bad luck, but this made the formerly happy little birds much sadder, hence the phrase “One For Sorrow”, and the middle stage becoming known as Wonfor. This abandonment led to wild Wonfor becoming very cautious of potential Tamers, for fear of being abandoned and causing a powerful anxiety to grow within them. Likewise, Tamers approach them with caution for fear of the curse, as it is said once a Wonfor’s sorrow builds to such a level, it’s final, terrible form is unleashed… Do you think you’re a good enough Tamer to handle the curse of a Wonfor? Chronology Frame #014 INSTINCT (1998) unproduced This one was so much fun. It was the first time I stepped foot on the Sony Pictures lot since I had been an executive assistant there 5 years earlier. This time I was doing something I truly loved instead of manning phones, scheduling and rescheduling endless meetings for 12 hours, only to spend the remainder of the day tethered to a beeper so I could find a florist still open at 10p and deliver flowers to one of my boss’s girlfriends…okay, I’ll stop whining. INSTINCT was a long-gestating Tristar project(remember that company?) to be directed by Geoffrey Wright. He gained attention in North America for helming the Australian film ROMPER STOMPER, which introduced the world to Russell Crowe. INSTINCT was not quite as prestigious, a horror film about pissed off ants terrorizing a small town. It was, however, a big project for me because I have always been a massive horror fan AND it introduced me to another legendary board artist, Marc Vena…more on him later. It was terrifying working across from Marc, but also an incredibly valuable learning experience that resulted in a little improvement in quality of my board output(it wouldn’t last though as you’ll see in my next few posts). This was also about the time I began over-boarding shots to represent every little action. While over-indulgent and unnecessary at the time, it would serve me well when I started to push for animatics to be my presentation format of choice. Unfortunately, INSTINCT never made it to the finish line. The director went on to do the fun SCREAM-esque horror movie, CHERRY FALLS. He was also developing a stand-alone SILVER SURFER movie that would also stall out. The boards that I saw for that were incredible. Anyone know who did those? I’m so bummed I never had a chance to sneak them out to make copies.
