Los machos cantan durante todo el día en perchas del sotobosque como lo son la base de los árboles dentro de su territorios; presentando una mayor actividad en las mañanas y las tardes durante la época de lluvias. Después de la reproducción crían a sus renacuajos en las bromelias que las utiliza como guardería para sus renacuajos donde la hembra alimentará a los renacuajos con huevos infertiles. En cuanto a la etimología el nombre genérico “𝗢𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗮” viene de la palabra griega “𝗼𝗼” que significa huevo y "𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗮” significa comer. House Finches were originally only found in the western United States, Mexico, and southern Canada. Around 1940, a group of these finches were captured in California and released by a pet store owner in New York. Not long after, they began establishing nests in Long Island and continued to spread throughout the east. Today, these birds are found in a variety of habitats, but are also considered invasive in some areas they’ve spread to competing for territory and food and spreading disease. 📸Western Lowland Gorilla: Ada Seeing gorillas walk on 2 legs is always so humorous to me. They’re definitely known to be one of the most quadruped of the great apes, so it’s just never what you expect to see while watching a gorilla. 🦍Do you see Ada’s little hands? They’re so much like yours. As primates, gorillas have hands that are nearly identical to ours- including opposable thumbs. They have hairless palms and fingernails just like we do as well as a very similar skeletal structure. The main differences lie in the third metacarpals (last bones in the palm) that have special adaptations including a ridge that prevents hyperextension of the lower joints while knuckle-walking. Gorillas also have interlocking bones in their forearms and wrists to help them bear their immense weight without damaging their joints, bones, or ligaments. 🦍Since gorillas have opposable thumbs, they also have the dexterity to use tools and to do things like learning sign language. Most famously, Koko the gorilla learned over 1000 different signs and could effectively communicate with her keepers and even with others who knew ASL. Koko played a huge role in transforming how the world at large viewed gorillas and helping others understand how incredibly smart and humanlike they really are. Last month I traveled to Cape Coral, Florida to see the famous burrowing owls and boy did they not disappoint! These little cuties are so stinking adorable! According to Cornell Labs All About Birds, burrowing owls live in open, treeless areas with low, sparse vegetation, usually on gently sloping terrain. The owls can be found in grasslands, deserts, and steppe environments; on golf courses, pastures, agricultural fields, airport medians, and road embankments; in cemeteries and urban vacant lots. They are often associated with high densities of burrowing mammals such as prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and tortoises. 📸African Painted Dogs This song is a great reference to the 2000’s live action Scooby Doo, which was a terrible franchise (the LA ones I mean) but this song will never not be stuck in my head. 🦴African painted dogs are a very social species of “wild dog” — more accurately a wild canine, as calling them a wild dog lends itself to strange ideas- who have never been domesticated. They are the largest indigenous canine in Africa and are found throughout a lot of (but not nearly as much as in previous decades) sub-Saharan Africa. 🦴By themselves, painted dogs would be pretty poor hunters with a very low success rate as they’re not truly that large and would be outweighed and overpowered by most prey and other predators on the savanna. But in a group of 10-15+ individuals they become one of the most successful hunters in Africa, easily beating out both cheetahs and lions. The APD’s hunting style is somewhat similar to lions in that they work cooperatively to catch their next meal, but I’ll elaborate on that another time. 🦴How closely related are painted dogs to other canines? Found throughout the entire continent of #Africa, on Asia including India, #Australia and even some Pacific Islands, the African #Monarch #Butterfly is a beautiful yet common insect. They have few predators due to their emetic properties; they build up cardenolides, which are toxic compounds found in the Milkweed they love to consume. #Butterflies feed through a long, curled tongue called a proboscis. They can only eat liquid in the form of nectar. They are often seen on the edges of puddles, where they seek the minerals in water. If you can get close enough, you can tell a male Monarch from a female. The male has a large scent gland on his hindwing that looks like a raised large black dot with a white center. Can you tell whether this is a male or female? You might need to click on the photo for a full-size version. African Monarchs don't #migrate like American Monarchs, which travel up to 3000 miles from Canada and the US to Mexico. Other Monarchs around the world either don't migrate, or migrate only short distances. The North American migration is one of the most incredible spectacles in the world. 📸African Lion: Kamari Hearing and seeing Kamari roar is always one of the highlights of my day. 🦁A lion’s roar doesn’t sound like what you hear in the movies because most of Hollywood dub tiger roars in for lions because they believe tigers sound more threatening. 🦁A lion’s roar can be heard from up to 5 miles away, but there are some caveats here regarding noise pollution, the geography of the area, and also what “kind” of roar we’re talking about here. How loud are the lions trying to be? For the loudest roars that can travel those 5 miles, many sources report that they can reach 115 decibels (within a 1 meter radius), which is the same noise level as a chainsaw. 🦁Lions typically roar because they are warning other lions that this territory is theirs and not to trespass. The lagoon sand worm is found in gravely, sandy and muddy substrata in water only slightly less saline than seawater. This rare, small worm is ribbon-like in appearance, and has three eyes on its head. The body comprises 26 or 27 segments, each of which bear bristles known as chaetae. The name of this group of worms, polychaetes, means ‘many bristles’. This worm has been discovered in three places in the UK but has vanished from one and is in low numbers in the two others; consequently, it is critically endangered. As I was taking a photo of this big bull elephant, he paused and stared down the lens. It was one of those moments where it was better to just look at the animal instead of taking the photo. The Serengeti: we drove across the border from Kenya in to Tanzania and made our way in to the Great Plains of the Serengeti. Incredible scenery and an unusual time for safari. It’s very green during January and so it’s quite tough spotting wildlife - apart from the really tall ones and ridiculous stripy ones, of course. The Latin name for giraffe is Giraffa Camelopardalis - coming from Camel Leopard which makes alot of sense when you look at them. The zebra is Hippotrigris which comes from Hippo (river horse) Tiger. The second part of my January trip was a safari, which started in Nairobi. I flew out of Moshi feeling a bit beaten from the hike, malaria tablets, and a dash of food poisoning but all was forgotten on the first drive round Amboseli national park. As the sun set, what seemed like 50+ elephants all turned and started walking towards Kilimanjaro just as the clouds cleared to reveal the snow (and 💩 sorry) capped summit. Incredible sights. No lions, on this day but giraffe and elephant ticked off! Our guide recounted a story of a tour he’d led in which a serpent eagle had hunted a black mamba - to kill them the bird flies up high and drops them - however on this occasion the snake landed in the safari vehicle! “What happened next?” “The snake bit a man and he died”. Excellent.
