Had a great time coordinating the annual tree planting with @nyctrout @newyorkbha @huntersofcolor @troutunlimited @tuvolops @tu_northeast at the Amawalk! This is the only designated wild trout stream that is within 40 miles of New York City. Before I had a car, I used to subway here, often, as many NYC anglers do currently and have done before me all to chase trout and enjoy this incredible ecosystem in our backyard! It is pretty amazing to see how many folks showed up from a coalition of conservation orgs to chip in to protect the stream by planting trees for bank stabilization and clearing invasive species. No mow May is right around the corner. What is it? An initiative which began in England and America has adopted. The purpose? To provide more wildflowers to bloom in maintained lawns as nectar sources for pollinators. The success? 🥴 No Mow May is not something I recommend as a pollinator conservationist. Here’s why: 🐝if you are altering your typically manicured lawn to provide nectar sources for early spring only and will than be changing the habitat with routine mowing by June 1st- that is not sustainable for the pollinators visiting your lawn or the life cycle of a possible nectar producing plant. YES, your no-mow-may-early-spring lawn may provide nectar for pollinators…some may even nest in the ground 😬 that’s what makes the repercussions of no-mow-May controversial. 📍if a food source is established and than eliminated they are forced to find other sources. (Think: your local grocery store vanishes overnight and now you need to travel to a new one…maybe much farther from your home.) 📍most pollinators are ground nesting species- which are shallow in the earth and mowing and compressing their habitat right as they have begun to establish a nest or colony will devastate their first round of offspring. 💔 🐝INSTEAD: Consider establishing an area of lawn or your property which will permanently not be mowed or routinely manicured.
