Britishers introduced cookies in this region, which served as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency when it was under the British Raj. The locals people who were trained to make the cookies, improvised it, made something new and named it as Varkey. Since then, Ooty is famous for its Varkey. No one really knows how or when it came in to being here or why it is called Varkey.
