šŸ•Šļø A Virtual Tribute to Davie County's Class of '57 šŸ•Šļø šŸŒŸ I am thrilled to announce my latest project - a virtual cemetery on findagrave.com dedicated to the students and teachers of the first graduating class of Davie County Consolidated High School in 1957. This memorial features yearbook photos and obituaries, with efforts made to connect individuals with their parents and spouses to enhance the memorial experience. šŸ” Please note that the list is incomplete, as some individuals from the class of 1957 are either still living or unable to be confirmed as the person in the yearbook. For those of you from Davie County who may have relatives from this class, I invite you to explore the virtual cemetery and see if your loved ones are included. This project aims to preserve the memories and legacy of those who have passed and celebrate their contributions to our community. šŸ‘ Stay tuned for my upcoming project by liking and following my page. This project will focus on creating a similar tribute to the class of 1980. Together, we can ensure that the stories and achievements of these individuals are honored and remembered for years to come. šŸŖ¦ Visit the virtual cemetery here: https://www.findagrave.com/virtual-cemetery/1812546 #VirtualTribute #RememberingThePast #InRemembrance #MemorialProject #FindAGrave #DavieCounty #DavieCountyNC #Mocksville #NorthCarolina #localhistory #historian #localhistorian #yearbook #yearbookphotos #obituary #familyhistory #genealogist #ancestry #dcaw #OCallahans #theStation #farmingtonnc #daviecountyschools #history #1957Class #VirtualMemorial #PreservingMemories #CommunityLegacy #VirtualCemetery #HighSchoolMemories

Majestic, isn't it? The building, not me. Although this double shot vanilla latte had me feeling majestic. Description of images: a #PublicHistorian enjoys an #ExtraShotOfHistory near the 1929-built Majestic Theater. It is #SanAntonioTX oldest and largest atmospheric theater. It is housed within a 14-story skyscraper (complete with a penthouse!). The inside blends Spanish Mission, Baroque, and Mediterranean architectural styles to create a feeling of being outdoors (cue irony). Examples include a starlit sky, floating clouds, hanging birds, and vines winding up columns (I didn't go inside, so Google it if you want to see the inside). The theater received renovations in the 80s, 90s, and 00s that allowed it to continue supporting large productions of shows, plays, and musicals. It is listed in the #NationalRegisterOfHistoricPlaces and is a #NationalHistoricLandmark. šŸ“ø: @freya66 #HistorianInRepose #SanAntonioHistory #SATX #PublicHistory #HistoricPreservation #Preservation #LocalHistory #CoffeePlease #MovieTheater

I was walking in Warrington when I saw this beautiful building. The structure is an old school house, which was used for nearly 200 years from 1765-1951. Inside is a store with antiques, cards, furniture, plates, collectibles, historical war posters, photos of the schoolā€™s classes through the years, and many, many historical books about SW Pennsylvania. The owner, Stuart, was so informative and kind. I canā€™t wait to visit again. Sunny in Helsinki, finally. ā˜€ļø I donā€™t even mind if it is quite cold still, as long as the sun is shining. And hundreds of scilla colour the surroundings of the Munkkiniemi (MunksnƤs) Manor. Munkkiniemi is now one of the cosiest neighbourhoods of Helsinki. MunksnƤs was originally a village in the Helsinge parish (present day Vantaa), and probably also a lively trading port, due to its location close to the sea. Later, MunksnƤs was part of a huge estate, that was partly donated and later sold to Helsinki. The estate had various owners, including German-born rittmeister Gert Skytte and his widow Kristina Freijtag, and the Dutch-born Mattheiszen family. They even had their own brick factory, sawmill and flourmill. The current design of the manor house dates back to 1810s. #scilla #munkkiniemi #munkkiniemimanor #tammitie #myhelsinki #localhistory

New book by the Ripon Historical Society, "Eve Faustman's Ripon Wisconsin: The Heritage Prints." The Heritage Prints were made by the Ripon community Art Center from 1956-1966 under the direction of Eve Faustman. She was an artistic leader of the community, and these prints were used to bolster regional pride. The method for creating the heritage prints is know as serigraphy. A serigraph is a type of printmaking process that involves pushing ink through a mesh stencil onto paper or another surface. The book features various landmarks of Ripon, WI and it is for sale at the Ripon Historical Society and on Amazon.com. #riponart #riponhistory #localhistory #riponwi #localartists

Ever since moving to Salem, I have been meaning to visit the Willamette Heritage Center and museum. #sheeptoshawl (and a windy rainstorm) finally drew me in. I ended up spending over three hours reading the exhibits, learning each production from step from raw wool to fine textiles, and watching two dedicated volunteers from the Historical Society perform as Martha and John Daniel Boon, Oregon's first Treasurer, retell the tale of their journey to Oregon. This is a wonderful museum to learn about our local history, the struggles of pre-industrial living, and how our town came to be. There was a suspicious lack of sheep, though! I think they stayed home, dry in their barn. #localhistory #SalemOregon #culturalheritage #oregontrail #freeevents #familyfriendly

It appeared that a new age dawned in 1889, when the Kilgour brothers introduced electric street cars as a replacement for horsecars and cable cars. The newfangled trolleys zipped up Cincinnatiā€™s steepest hills, obviating the need to add auxiliary horse or mule teams on the steeper routes. The electric cars required far less maintenance than the cable cars that often, literally, froze up on icy winter days. Despite their contemporary styling and innovative power systems, the new electric street cars had one small but persistent drawback. They killed lots of people. Time for another #MysteryMonday. Unfortunately, we don't have an answer for this one, so we really need your help. Do you recognize these people? They appear to be in a school gym and there are small flags on the table. From the clothing and hairstyles, it looks like it is from the 1940s-1950s. Some type of reunion? A celebratory dinner? The image was found in a group of photos from the Carbone family (more on the Carbones later.) "Famous Helena Sculpture" In the heart of downtown Helena, MT, an eye-catching copper water feature captures the essence of local history and charm. This unique installation showcases two life-sized figures, crafted in detailed bronze, depicting gold panners at work. They are positioned mid-action, with pans in hand, symbolizing Helena's rich gold rush heritage. The figures are set against a backdrop of cascading water that reflects the shimmering light, enhancing the visual impact of the scene. This artistic tribute is not only a nod to the past but also a popular gathering spot for both locals and tourists, offering a picturesque moment in the bustling city environment. Surrounding the sculpture, the urban setting of Helena provides a contrasting backdrop that highlights the historical significance of the piece. These ā€œBarker Bricksā€ were made from clay from the same site as the bricks used to build the 1821 Barker house, todayā€™s Darwin R. Barker Library & Museum. Each brick is stamped with ā€˜1821,ā€™ signifying the year of the Barkerā€™s construction. The bricks were made and graciously donated this year by Ron Nasca of Mudslingers Studio in Fredonia. Nasca explained, ā€œTo tame this wild clay, it first has to be dried, then pulverized, rewetted, and sieved to remove large and small rocks.ā€ Nasca obtained the clay near Chestnut Street, where the brickyard of Hezekiah Turner and Horace Risley once stood. 100,000 bricks were sold to Leverett Barker (1787-1848) who had our historic building constructed in 1821, making it the first brick house in Fredonia. The Library & Museum is named after Leverettā€™s son Darwin R. Barker (1820-1885), who donated his childhood home at 7 Day Street to the Fredonia Library Association in 1882. These Barker Bricks can be purchased for $10 at the Barker. #localhistory #clay #bricks #publiclibrary

A story from HMS 'Ursula' - the Chorley & District Submarine āš“ On 3rd December 1942, a merchant vessel was sighted by the crew of Ursula, which was identified as being the ā€˜Sainte Marguerite IIā€™. Commander Lakin readied the men and the gun crew closed up in the control room, ammunition was prepared and they attacked. The crew of the merchant ship took to their lifeboats and fled. Some of the men even chose to jump into the sea and then wait to be picked up by the lifeboat. Eventually, running on the surface with electric motors, Ursula quietly nosed its way along starboard side to board the vessel. After 15 minutes, the boarding party came up on deck wearing civilian clothing, carrying charts, books, papers, and a little bread. And in the arms of one of the crew was a small black and white mongrel dog. The next couple of days went by without incident until on 7th December Ursula became the first submarine to enter Algiers Harbour after the successful allied invasion. Now back in port, the men of Ursula were left with the small mongrel dog, which they had named Petain. Petain was ā€œscandalously petted and fussed overā€ by the crew, said Commander Lakin. It is believed that Petain became a pet of the commander of the submarine depot ship, ā€˜Maidstoneā€™, which arrived in Algiers the day after. May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. You may think mental health language and considerations are a recent phenomenon, but actually, Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949! According to Mental Health America, one in five people will experience a mental health condition in any given year, and everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health. Itā€™s important to talk about mental health in all spaces, including museums. The Louisville Historical Museum recognizes that history can be tricky when it comes to mental health. History can be uncomfortable and potentially triggering to talk about, especially when dealing with difficult or contentious histories. Additionally, individuals with mental illnesses have historically been subjected to negative labels and treatment in society which has been perpetuated and revealed in modern day stigmas. The Louisville Historical Museum commits itself to accurate and equitable research and portrayals of historic individuals with mental illnesses and to providing a welcoming environment for all in the Museum buildings. Ready to tackle your mental health? Here are five positive things you can do for your mental health this week: 1. Make a list of five things youā€™re grateful for today. 2. Practice positive affirmations. 3. Start a conversation about mental health. 4. Stay hydrated! 5. Take a break from screens. alt text: "Where to Start" "It's always a good time to start working on your mental health. Take a free mental health test: MHAScreening.Org." Happy McCleary Monday! Today, we are highlighting the New Hope High School. Built-in the mid1920s, this school is a prime example of the 'central-auditorium school plan.' These were common in Augusta County in the 1920s-1930s. The original plan for the building did not include basement classrooms, but the plan was adapted to create science and home economic classrooms for students. The school displays mild influences of the Art Deco movement. This school has remained a community staple since it opened. Today, it is the New Hope Community Center. Throughout its life it has had multiple additional to meet the community's needs, such as the 1942 enlargement, the 1945 cannery, the 1959 brick elementary addition, and many others. These additions kept up with the community's educational needs as it grew. AugustaCounty Schools #mcclearymonday #education #schoollife #artdeco #localhistory #newhopeva #augustacountyva
