🇫🇷HIGHLIGHT FROM OUR PAST AUCTION🇫🇷 “To take photographs is to hold one's breath when all faculties converge in the face of fleeing reality. It is at that moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy. To take photographs means to recognize—simultaneously and within a fraction of a second—both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. It is putting one's head, one's eye, and one's heart on the same axis.” 👁️❤️ – Henri Cartier-Bresson Lot no. 55 of the 20th WestLicht Photo Auction HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON (1908–2004) Marseilles, France, 1932 Gelatin silver print Starting price: 4,000 €⠀ Price realised: 8,000 € #WestLichtPhotoAuction #20WestLichtPhotoAuction #henricartierbresson

✨HIGHLIGHT FROM OUR PAST AUCTION✨ While studying with Lisette Model in the late 1950s, the New Yorker Diane Arbus (1923–71) acquired the techniques which were ultimately to define her work. By recording human flaws and masquerades, her portraits point out the rifts and margins of society. They stage and accentuate the strangeness within the familiar and the humdrum within the grotesque. Now considered icons of photographic history, Arbus’ portraits of human beings insist on visualizing the difference which she herself so befittingly called the “gap between intention and effect” of those portrayed. To capture this complex field of tension between self-perception, wishful images and performance within precise pictures – that can be considered the core competence of an artist who may have been an empathetic accomplice of her subjects, but who never shied away from the unmasking effect of photography. Lot no. 109 of the 20th WestLicht Photo Auction DIANE ARBUS (1923–1971) 'Loser at a Diaper party', New Jersey, 1967 Gelatin silver print, printed by Neil Selkirk Starting price: 8,000 €⠀ Price realised: 10,000 € #WestLichtPhotoAuction #20WestLichtPhotoAuction #dianearbus

✨HIGHLIGHT FROM OUR PAST AUCTION✨ Jaromír Funke was a founder of the Czech Society of Photography (1924) whose mission was to create photography that would fulfill new social functions. In his work Funke managed to combine some of the leading trends in modernist European photography, uniting constructivism and functionalism with surrealism and social commentary, with traditional Czech aesthetics. His interest in modernist ideas led him to make clearly focused studies of simple objects. Lot no. 11 of the 20th WestLicht Photo Auction JAROMÍR FUNKE (1896–1945) Still life with glass bottle, 1924 Vintage silver print Starting price: 4,000 €⠀ Price realised: 8,500 € #WestLichtPhotoAuction #20WestLichtPhotoAuction #jaromirfunke

🏜🏚 »Written in the West« is a series of photographs shot by Wim Wenders with his medium format Makina Plaubel 6x7 camera during a road trip through Southwest America: Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California. German filmmaker went there in the late 1983 looking for the subjects and locations for his iconic film »Paris, Texas« (1984). Wenders was captivated by unique, saturated light of wild, deserted landscapes of American West: empty shops, cafes and roads seem to be inhabited by signage and advertisement instead of humans. This great stillness is the essence of Wenders’ series, which was not taken by photographer as locations, but rather to sharpen his idea and conception of what American West is. 🛎Lot no. 170 of our upcoming auction WIM WENDERS, ‘Now showing, Lowell, Arizona’ (from ‘Written in the West’), 1983 Dye transfer print, printed in 1989, 33.5 x 42 cm Starting price: 2,400 € #Sieff #Paris #VintagePrint#20WestLichtPhotoAuction #WestLichtPhotoAuction

✨PHOTO OT THE WEEK✨ Four years after the Cuban revolution in 1959, Magnum sent René Burri to Cuba to take photographs of Ernesto »Che« Guevara during an interview for the widely circulated American magazine Look. As President of the National Bank and Minister of Industry, Che Guevara was the second most powerful man in Cuba and had personally invited the American star journalist Laura Bergquist to the Sugar Island so that she could form her own opinion about the success of the revolution. In retrospect, Burri would describe the atmosphere of the conversation as »tense«. Right at the start, Che denied Burri his request to open the blinds to improve the lighting situation in the room. Furthermore, he would not deign to look at Burri during the three-hour interview, during which the photographer exposed six rolls of film. »I could expose all of his characteristics: charm, power of persuasion and anger. But he did not look into the camera one single time.« Lot 66 of the upcoming WestLicht Photo Auction RENÉ BURRI (1933–2014) ›Che Guevara y su tabaco‹, Cuba 1963 Gelatin silver print, printed in 2007 38×25,4 cm (15×10 in) Signed, annotated and dated by the photographer in pencil on the reverse Starting price: 2,800 € On Saturday the 20th WestLicht Photo Auction (@westlicht_photo_auction) will take place at 4 pm in OstLicht. "As a fashion photographer who uses the recording medium for his productions, the photographer must live, think and feel in his time. Fashion photographs are always interpretations and stagings. They reflect and visualize the zeitgeist of the present and anticipate the spirit of tomorrow. They offer projection screens for identification, but also for dreams, wishes and desires. And yet fashion photographs often say more about a time than documentary photographs pretending to have depicted reality". F.C. Gundlach 🚲✨🖤 Born in 1926 in Heinebach, #Gundlach got his first camera, an Agfa-Box, in 1938. After his release from an American POW camp, he studied photography in Kassel between 1946 and 1949. His first freelance publications were theatre and film reports for different magazines like 'Stern', 'Quick', and 'Revue'. In 1953 he began to specialize in fashion photography in a journalistic style for the Hamburg-based magazine 'Film und Frau'. During that time, he documented the fashion of Berlin designers, Paris haute couture, as well as portraits and fashion shots of international film stars. 🛎Lot no. 73 of our upcoming auction F. The feeling of solitude and isolation combined with the respect and humanity that these photographs express transcends mere documentation and makes them the most powerful of the entire series. 🎪🤹‍♀🎭 Soon after joining the Magnum Agency, #BruceDavidson produced one of his most significant series 'The Dwarf', 1958. Sam Holmes, the picture librarian in Magnum NY office suggested to visit #ClydeBeattyCircus in #NewJersey, one of the most important in the United States and which featured some of the great names in the history of the American circus. Rather than focusing on the striking appearance or daring acts of its stars, Davidson directed his gaze towards the everyday activities of the performers and circus workers outside the big top. In particular he focused on the life of #JimmyArmstrong, a dwarf and clown, a tireless performer, a man of all parts and one who never failed to amuse children with his costumes and jokes. Davidson gradually entered into Armstrong’s world, photographing his various activities, either performing or undertaking the numerous tasks he was assigned within the circus routine, but also when he ceased to be Little Man and once again became Jimmy. Davidson travelled with the troupe for some weeks with the result that he established a long-lasting friendship with Jimmy. From these early series onwards Davidson’s work reveals his original manner of approaching a subject, as well as the presence of a commitment that differentiates his work from the conventions of photo-reportage but which clearly brings it close to that of #WEugeneSmith in his heroic intention to establish a standard of coherence, intensity and personal responsibility in his photographs. 🛎BRUCE DAVIDSON, ‘The Dwarf, Palisades Amusement Park’, New Jersey 1958 Vintage silver print, 34.9 x 23 cm Starting price: 2,600 € #Davidson #MagnumPhotos #VintagePrint#20WestLichtPhotoAuction #WestLichtPhotoAuction

‘Cartier-Bresson’s visceral intuition, the Surrealist principle of dislocation, and the instantaneity of the #Leica, have come together to transform the ordinary incident into an image of rapture’ #PeterGalassi 🕊📸 Working with a small hand-held Leica camera, Cartier-Bresson produced especially in the 1930s a body of images notable for their complexity. In this image Cartier-Bresson’s genius is evident especially in what he chose to leave outside the frame of the picture. There is no explanation present in the picture for the young boy’s outstretched arms and ecstatic expression. The child is bending back, but as if stabbed. In fact, the boy is awaiting the descent of a ball that has just been thrown in the air. The present print is in beautiful condition and comes originally from the private collection of James A. Fox, who worked as an editor for Magnum for more than 30 years. 🛎Lot no. 57 of our upcoming auction HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON, Valencia, Spain 1933 Gelatin silver print, printed in the 1960s, exhibition print, 32.7 x 49 cm Starting price: 4,500 € #HenriCartierBresson #CartierBresson #MagnumPhotos #20WestLichtPhotoAuction #WestLichtPhotoAuction

This intimate photo of #RobertFrank’s family, picturing his young wife Mary and their daughter Andrea is part of the book “The Lines of My Hand”. It was originally published by Yugensha in Tokyo in 1972 and is structured chronologically and presents selections from every stage of Frank’s work until 1972—from early photos in Switzerland in 1945–46, to images of his travels in Peru, Paris, Valencia, London and Wales, and to contact sheets from his 1955–56 journey through the US that resulted in “The Americans” and made him famous. This portrait shows #RogerFenton dressed in a traditional #Zouave costume, holding a rifle with both hands and with a cigar in his mouth. There is a bottle and a tankard on the table beside him to the left and a plain cloth backdrop draped behind. It was arranged by Fenton himself but photographed by his assistant Marcus Sparling. Zuave regiments from #Algeria served with the French army during the #CrimeanWar, and had a distinctive North African uniform. Fenton photographed Zouaves on several occasions during his time in the #Crimea, as well as posing for this series of self-portraits. Using glass plate negatives and the wet collodion process, he captured striking images during the war, mainly in springtime, when the light was strong. The lack of blurring in most of his images, even through exposure times were three and twenty seconds, shows his technical mastery. His photographs were published by Agnew & Sons and sold by subscription in several portfolios between 1855 and 1856. The present print is in very good condition and shows a high degree of contrast 🛎Lot no. 1 of our upcoming auction ROGER FENTON, Self-portrait in Zouave uniform, 1855 Salt paper print from wet collodion negativa, mounted on original paper page, 20.7 x 16.3 cm Starting price: 6,000 € #Felton #SaltPaperPrint#20WestLichtPhotoAuction #WestLichtPhotoAuction

"Brassaï is a living eye" 👁📸 That's what #HenryMiller wrote of the Hungarian-born artist #Brassaï who adopted #Paris after World War I and became one of its most celebrated photographers. Originally a painter before he moved on to writing, sculpture, cinema and, most famously, photography, Brassaï was a member of Paris's cultural elite, counting #Miller, #Picasso, #Sartre, #Camus, and #Cocteau, among his friends. Camera in hand, he scoured the streets and bars of Paris, unabashedly capturing the city's inhabitants in their natural habitats, often at night. Brassaï captured the essence of the city in his photographs, published as his first collection in the 1933 book entitled 'Paris de nuit'. Lot no. 39 of our upcoming auction BRASSAÏ, 'Feu d'artifice', Tour Eiffel, Paris 1944 Vintage gelatin silver print Starting price: 2,400 € #Brassai #GyulaHalász #VintagePrint #20WestLichtPhotoAuction #WestLichtPhotoAuction #FeuDArtifice #TourEiffel #ParisDeNuit

The discovery of #VivianMaier’s photographs hit the photo world like a bomb in 2009 💣💣💣 The story of the hitherto completely unknown photographer, who had made a living as a nanny throughout her lifetime and whose archive had been acquired rather incidentally by a young collector at a foreclosure sale, captured the public’s imagination well beyond the traditional photo audiences. Vivian Maier posthumously became a star almost overnight, ranked among the likes of #HenriCartierBresson, #RobertFrank, #LeeFriedlander or #DianeArbus. Many of her pictures taken in the streets of #NewYorkCity and #Chicago since the 1950s feel like instant classics. With her exquisite eye for the moment and a sublime sense of composition, Maier firmly claims her place in the traditionally male-dominated pantheon of street photography. Lot no. 83 of our upcoming auction VIVIAN MAIER, New York, 1954 Gelatin silver print, printed in the 2010s Starting price: 2,600 € #20WestLichtPhotoAuction #WestLichtPhotoAuction
